Abstract
992,101. Rolling. BLAW-KNOX CO. Oct. 28, 1963, No. 42381/63. Heading B3M. A tandem strip mill assembly is provided with an interstand threading guide frame having guides on each side of the path of strip travel, and sensors on the guides, such that when the strip moves from the centre-line of the mill the sensors are moved and thus actuate the preceding stand to differentially charge the roll pressure on opposite sides of the stand to cause centering of the strip. The leading end of a coil 10 is unwound at 16 and is fed past pinch rolls 19, guides 23, rolls 27 of a first stand 24, and to a tensiometer 28 of a threading guide 29. The guide 29 has sideguards 30 and 31, shown in plan, Fig. 3, which contain vertical rollers 36, converge towards the left and are adjustable symmetically about the mill centre line by screws 34 and 35 driven through gearing from a motor 32, and are held in position by cylinders 37. Attached to the sideguards are sensors 38 of the variable transformer type, for example, whose outputs are fed to actuators for varying the roll pressure on opposite sides of the first stand 24 to cause centering of the strip. Load cells 43, Fig. 2, on the stands sense the pressure of the strip and cause opening of the sideguards when the strip reaches the second stand, and resetting of the sideguards when the tail end of the strip has passed the second stand. The threading guide can be raised and lowered by an hydraulic cylinder 45 and can be moved laterally clear of the stand. The guides 23 have separable halves operated by hydraulic cylinders 25 and scissor mechanisms 26. The coil 10 before rolling is carried on a conveyer 1 between centering guides 11, is supported on adjustable rollers 17a and 17b while the leading end is separated by a picker blade at 16, and is transferred without rotation to rollers 18a and 186 where it rests during rolling. The coil opener at 16, and also a coil box 18 holding the coil, can be moved transversely of the rolling line by hydraulic cylinders.
