A group drive for the stands of a continuous rolling mill incorporates a pair of driving motors 33 which drive the first and last stands of the mill directly, and drive the intermediate stands at speeds progressively increasing through the mill through rows of differentials 5, 7, 9 and 10. The speed ratios between adjacent stands is controllable by suitably varying the speeds of one or both motors 33. In the embodiment shown, seventeen stands are driven from motors 33 through eight differentials 5, four differentials 7, and three differentials 9 and 10. The upper and lower halves of a housing 8 are shown respectively in Figs. 1 and 2. For driving, say, thirteen stands in tandem a group drive for nine stands may be combined with one for 5 stands, the three driving motors used enabling the speed ratios of the two groups to be controlled independently.
