Abstract

1,120,227. Knitting-machines. HOSIERY & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION and JOHN HEATHCOAT & CO. Ltd. 11 Oct., 1965 [10 Oct., 1964], No. 41455/64. Heading D1C. A wool or other textile filament, spandex or metallic yarn is fed to the feeder of a cylinder-and-dial machine by having a spool 13 of the yarn resting on a positively driven roller 11 which is driven by the machine so that the yarn is delivered at a speed relative to that of the machine. The spool 13 has axle pins extending from each end which are guided in slots 9a, 10a of the upstanding arms 9, 10 of a U-shaped bracket 7 containing the postively driven roller 11 at its base. The roller 11 is driven by gearing 32, 44 through a variable speed drive 43 from a spur gear 4 on the machine. The bracket is slidably mounted on a plate 33 to enable the drive gears 4 exchanged to enable the rate of feed to be varied. In an alternative arrangement the variable speed drive can be adjusted under the control of a pattern chain to vary the rate of feed during knitting by which the diameter of the tube knitted is also varied along its length thereby shaping the tube.
