Abstract

To maintain the yarn fed to the needles of a straight bar machine at substantially constant tension to ensure that the loop structure remains uniform, a yarn guide bracket 25 through which the yarn is guided to the carrier is interposed between a feed roller 21 and the carrier 8 and is, movable up and down to maintain the distance between the guide end 34a and the carrier constant. In addition, the feed roller 21 is controlled by a drive which is influenced by the position of the carrier bar and slur cock. The roller is driven through a drive comprising a brake and clutch which operate to start or stop the roller according to the position of the carrier bar and slur cock. The carrier bar further drives through rack and pinion mechanism 33 a cam 30 which reciprocates the bracket 25 so as to maintain the distance between the guide and 34a and the carrier 8 constant. Consequently the rate of feed and the relative position of the guide end 34a and carrier are maintained at a relationship which achieves a constant tension on the yarn and assists in producing a uniform loop structure. Instead of a rack and pinion arrangement the carrier bar may carry a cam surface engageable by a follower fixed directly to the bracket 25 such that the reciprocatory movement is achieved direct from the carrier bar movement.
