Abstract

1,119,088. Electric cut outs. S. & C. ELECTRIC CO. 18 Nov., 1966 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 51784/66. Heading H2G. In a cartridge fuse generally similar to that disclosed in Specification 1,108,108 the spark gaps are enclosed in arc blast chutes which direct the heat of the spark on to the auxiliary fuse elements. Thus the auxiliary fuse elements are blown by the combined efforts of the currents through the auxiliary fuses and the heat of the sparks. As shown electrodes 38 are crimped into contact with the auxiliary fuse elements or tapes 30 and are supported in an insulator having radial fins which define the arc blast chutes 73. When a spark bridges the gap between an electrode 38 and the rim 69 of a conductive tube 68, the corresponding chute directs the blast so as to burn through the extension 71 of the corresponding auxiliary fuse element. A garter spring 61 of berylium and copper completes the connection between the electrode 55 and the electrode 14 when the indicator tube is in the non-indicating position (Fig. 1, not shown). An annular washer 75 of inorganic material such as calcium carbonate or magnesium borate which evolves gas for increasing the arc blast action may be included as shown.
