Abstract
1,233,867. Spark gaps. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 20 Feb., 1970 [21 Feb., 1969], No. 8190/70. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H2] A spark gap for a surge diverter comprising electrodes 3, 4 mounted on an insulating base 1 and diverging from an ignition point 7 into an extinguishing chamber 2 is provided with a channel 15 through which hot ionized gas is gas is forced when an arc 10 is blown magnetically into the chamber 2 so that the gap re-ignites when the arc 10 is extinguished. The process is repeated until the gas flow, which depends on the arc current, is too low to cause re-ignition. The channel 15 may be formed in the base 1, in the electrode 3, or partly in each, and may be provided in association with one or (as shown) both electrodes. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the channels 15, 16 are directed to a re-ignition point spaced from the ignition point 7. A surge diverter is formed by one or more such spark gaps together with a non-linear resistor.
