Abstract

475,311. Fusible-cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1936, No. 35309. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1935. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] The Figure shows an expulsion fuse in which the element 4, with reduced part 4<1>, is connected at one end to a terminal ring 3 at the open end of the insulating cylinder 1, and at the other end to a terminal cap 2. A longitudinally-positioned arc-member 7 is secured to a number of radial fins 8 of conducting or insulating material, and of such length as to provide a dead region comprising gas spaces of appreciable volume. When the element ruptures at 4<1>, high pressure set up in that part of the cylinder ejects the remainder of the element. The arc tends to form between the terminals and member 7, with its sections separated by the dead region. The blast produced by the arc between 2, 7 drives the gas from the dead region across the other arcsection, and at the same time the ionized gas from the pressure-arc is cooled by the structure 6 and mixed with un-ionized gas before it traverses the other arc-gap.
