Abstract
Silicon-iron of low oxygen content for the manufacture of oriented silicon-iron sheet is produced by adding to ferrous metal in a first vessel sufficient silicon-bearing material (e.g. Fe-Si) to combine with the oxygen in the ferrous metal and leave therein a substantial residual quantity of silicon, adding sufficient manganese bearing material (e.g. electrolytic Mn) to the first vessel to bring the manganese content up to the final level, transferring the ferrous metal to a second vessel, adding sufficient silicon-bearing material to bring the silicon content up to the desired final level, adding aluminium to the ferrous metal and holding it in the second vessel for a period sufficient to allow inclusions to float out. If the charge is subsequently made into cube-on-edge sheet the equivalent of at least 1 1/2 lb of 65% Fe-Si per ton of metal charge is added to the first vessel; if it is made into cube-on-face sheet the equivalent of at least 5lb of 65% Fe-Si per ton of charge is added. Both vessels may be ladles or the first vessel may be the furnace and the second a ladle.
