Abstract

A method of making spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises treating the molten iron with a slag consisting of 15-21% by weight of a halide of calcium, 3-10% by weight of carbon and the balance calcium-magnesium carbonate and then introducing the spheroidising agent. The calcium halide may be fluorspar, the calcium magnesium carbonate may be dolomite, the carbon may be coke and the spheroidising agent may be magnesium. The process may be carried out in any type of furnace, acid or basic, capable of producing cast iron.
