Graphite in the cast iron is turned to caterpiller graphite to enhance the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation of a casting. By regulating the Si content of the cast iron to below 1.0%, caterpiller graphite cast iron of high reliability in quality is manufactured without adding a graphite spheroidizing inhibiting element such as Ti.
