Abstract

High purity Fe-Si contains 10-99.5% Si, 0.05-3% Al, =4% Ca and/or Mg and an intermetallic cpd. (I) in amt. =0.25%. (I) is composed of 1-12.5% Al2O3, 3-40% MgO and/or CaO, =5% FeO and the balance SiO2. In an example, electrolytic Fe was melted in a h.f. induction furnace at 1600 degrees C, and is approx. 7% of ferrosilicon was added to the molten Fe. The ferrosilicon comprised 69.9% Si, 0.61% Al, 0.80% Ca, 1.34% Mg, 0.04% intermetallic cpds. and the rest Fe. (The intermetallic cpds. were composed of 62.0% SiO2, 5.85% Al2O3 and 29.40% CaO + MgO). The 5% Si steel obtd. was cast into an ingot. The ingot was forged into a billet of thickness 10 mm. at 900 degrees C and further worked into a sheet of thickness 1 mm. at 150 degrees C. Crack formation was not observed through working due to low Al2O3 content.
