Abstract

Crude iron is desulphurized by injecting into the molten metal a pulverized mixture of lime and soda, the mixture containing 7-12% of soda by weight, and being suspended in a small quantity of carrier gas. The latter may be nitrogen, air or other inert gas, and preferably as little as 5 litres of gas per kilogram of refining agent is used. The mixture may be added through a pipe immersed in the metal which may be contained in a conventional ladle, or through the walls or bottom of a suitable vessel.
