A piston and spring gauge for testing the compression of an internal combustion engine has a one way valve 26 to intermittently admit gas to a cylinder 10 containing the spring-loaded piston 20 and scale 24 until the gas pressure within the cylinder 10 is the same as the maximum pressure to be measured. The gauge may also be used as a tyre pressure gauge.
