[Class 106 (ii)] In a method of testing physical qualities the testpiece is subjected to a static or continuous load and to a pulsating unidirectional load superposed on the first load and in the opposite sense. The static load may be tensional or compressive. In one form, Fig. 1, the test-piece 4 is held in a fixed head 5 and a movable head 3 which is connected to pistons 2, 12 operating in cylinders 1,11. Air is admitted into the cylinder 11, giving a continuous compressive lead on the test-piece, and the cylinder 1 is connected to an oil-filled cylinder 7 in which a piston 8 is reciprocated by mechanism 9, 10, producing a pulsating tensional load on the test-piece. The cylinder 11 is connected to one side of two manometers 13, 14 which are connected through a rotary piston valve 15 to the cylinder 1, the valve arrangement being such that the manometers indicate the maximum and minimum pressure differences. Other suitable pressure meters may be provided to indicate the pressure difference in the two cylinders. The static load may be applied through springs on other resilient means so that it may be kept constant, on an intermediate system, Fig. 2, not shown, comprising a spring-biassed piston moving in a cylinder coupled to the cylinder 11 may be employed.
