A plate bending machine having a fixed roller 2 and at least one movable roller 3, 4 incorporates at least one fixed cylinder 5, 6 and a piston 7, 8 movable therein and operatively connected to the movable roller 3, 4 so that outward movement of the piston reduces the gap between the rollers, an adjustable abutment 13, 14 engageable by the piston 7, 8 at a predetermined position on its outward movement, and a spill valve incorporated in a fluid pressure system associated with the cylinder 5, 6, the spill valve being set to open at a pressure in excess of that corresponding to maximum thrust required from the piston 7, 8 during operation of the machine. The abutments 13, 14 comprise externally threaded sleeves splined on to the piston rods 11, 12 and engaging nuts 15, 16 restrained from axial movement but rotated by worms 17, 18. Two piston and cylinder means may be provided for each movable roll, one at each end thereof, the abutment thereof being adjusted simultaneously by worms on the same drive shaft. A clutch may be provided to isolate such worms from one another to allow different adjustments for the abutments at each end of the roll, thus to tilt the roll to facilitate bending conical work.
