Abstract

1,093,242. Variable-speed friction gear. SILENTBLOC (AUSTRALIA) PROPRIETARY Ltd. July 19, 1965 [May 26, 1964; July 8, 1964], Nos. 21712/64 and 28142/64. Heading F2D. A variable-speed friction gear comprises oppositely-tapering circular members on the input and output shafts, the members being urged towards one another to establish a driving connection and the gear ratio being varied by adjusting the relative spacing or angle between the shafts. As shown a convex member 75 at the end of the input shaft 65 engages a concave member 76 carried by a parallel shaft 71 connected to a transverse output shaft 79 by worm gearing 77, 78, The ratio is varied by tilting the shaft 71 and member 76 about the axis of shaft 79 by a screwed shaft 87 operated by a hand wheel 88, contact between the members 75, 76 being maintained by a spring 83 at the opposite end of shaft 71. A thin film of oil is supplied between the members 75, 76 by arranging for the rim of member 76 to dip into an open bottom cup 91 immersed in oil to a predetermined depth. Other arrangements are described with parallel input and output shafts whose spacing is adjustable to vary the gear ratio. Figs. 1-3 and 6-9, (not shown).
