Abstract

1,72,782. Film transport mechanism. EASTMAN KODAK CO. May 25, 1964 [June 17, 1963], No. 21454/64. Heading G2A. The transport mechanism is shown as applied to a photographic processing apparatus Fig. 1 (not shown), in which either separate sheets or a continuous film strip is passed through a succession of processing tanks. Fig. 2 shows the conveying of a number of separate sheets 24, 25, 26 vertically by transport rollers 20, and turned around by a larger master roller 22. Further rollers 28, 30, 32 act as guides. Master roller 22 is driven by a chain 18 and sprocket 34, the sprocket driving roller 22 via a unidirectional clutch 36. The sprocket is of slightly larger diameter than roller 22, so that the velocity of the chain is slightly greater than the surface speed of roller 22. The film sheets are driven by rollers 20 at a speed slightly greater than this surface speed, so that as they pass round roller 22 they drive it at their own speed, over-riding the clutch. If roller 22 is momentarily not being driven by a film sheet, its speed falls only by such amount that the clutch engages once more and drives it at the speed of sprocket 34. Thus there is no possibility of master roller 22 slowing sufficiently to cause jamming or overlapping of the film sheets. When continuous film strips are being conveyed, which strips are liable to expand on passing through a processing solution and so cause slack, this is taken up as soon as it develops by the continuing rotation of roller 22.
