Abstract

[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a marine propulsion plant having a plurality of engines driving the propeller shaft 8 (e.g. diesel engines 1 coupled by shafts 2 to change-speed gears 3 and gas turbines 4 by shafts 5 to gears 6) through a collective gearing 7 (of which the gearwheel 30 and driven shaft 31 are shown in Fig. 2), at least some of the engines being disconnectably connected (via free-wheel coupling 29) to the collective gearing through a planetary gearing, the inner or outer central wheel (14 or 18) of said planetary gearing may additionally be driven via an intermediate gearing (15, 19) and, on disconnection of an engine, the shaft (22) provided for the additional drive of the central wheel can be held stationary by means of an interlocking coupling (24) or blocked with the outer central wheel (in the embodiment of Fig. 4, not shown), a coupling 21 being provided for the engagement of the additional drive. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the engine driven shaft 13 includes the pinion 15 of the intermediate gear 15, 19 and the inner central wheel 14 of the planetary gear whose planet wheels 16 are carried at 17 by the output shaft 26 coupled at 29 to a pinioned hollow shaft 28 meshing with gear-wheel 30. If only one of two engines or engine groups is operating, the hydrodynamic coupling 21 in the aperture engine or engine group is emptied, the coupling 24 is closed, the outer wheel 18 is held, and the power from shaft 13 is transmitted via the inner wheel 14 and the planet wheel carrier 17 to the shaft 31. When the inoperative engine or engine group is started, the coupling 21 is filled and the coupling 24 is automatically uncoupled, and the pinion 23 drives the outer wheel 18 so that the planet wheels 16 and hence the carrier 17 rotate at higher speed.
