[Also in Division H2] In a driving installation for ships having electricity generators 14, 15 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) which can be driven from the driving engine 1 as desired, the driving engine is connected via a gearing 2 with the propeller shaft 4 carrying a variable pitch propeller 18, the shaft 3 of the gearing is rigidly coupled both to the engine and the propeller shaft, the primary part 7 of a fluid coupling 6 is rigidly mounted on the gear shaft 3 and the secondary part 8 is provided with a gear rim 9 engaged by pinions 12, 13 mounted in the gear housing on shafts 10, 11 coupled to the generators 14, 15 to drive same. When full power is required by the propeller, the coupling 6 is emptied so that only the gearing shaft 3 and the primary part 7 thereon rotate with the shaft 4. When a lower power is required, the coupling 6 is filled so that the secondary part 8 is rotated to drive the generators 14, 15.
