Abstract

742,794. Propelling ships. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1953 [Sept. 19, 1952], No. 23632/52. Class 114. [Also in Group XXVI] In a power transmission comprising a shaft arranged to transmit power to a first load, a shaft arranged to transmit power to a second load, and a disconnectable torque - transmitting coupling between the two shafts, when the coupling is disconnected each shaft can transmit power to its load independently of the other and when the coupling is engaged either shaft can transmit power to both loads. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the transmission from each gas-turbine engine 10 to its associated propeller 11 comprises an engine shaft 13, a high-speed reduction and reversing gear and clutch 12, an output shaft 14, a low-speed reduction gear 15, and a propeller shaft 21. As shown in Fig. 2, each reduction gear 15 comprises an input pinion 16 meshing with gear wheels 17 on layshafts 18 having pinions 19 meshing with a gear 20 on the propeller shaft 21. A gear train 22 provided between a gear-wheel 17 of each reduction gear 15 comprises gear-wheels 24 in mesh with said gear-wheels 17 and carried on two parallel layshafts 23, one of which has secured thereto a gear wheel 25 constantly in mesh with a similar wheel 26 freely rotatable on the other layshaft. A clutch 27 is located between the gear wheel 26 and its layshaft 23 to enable them to be drivingly coupled. When the ship is cruising only one engine 10 is in operation, the clutch 27 is engaged and power is transmitted to both propellers 11. When increased power is required the second engine is started up. When the clutch is disengaged each engine will transmit power to its associated propeller independently of the other. In other embodiments " cruising " and " booster " engines are employed, and where more than two engines as shown in Fig. 1 are used, the additional ones are arranged geared to the shafts 13 or to the gear train 22.
