Tobacco is fed from a belt 2 to a groove 17 in a feed wheel 1 and passed under an endless presser belt 4, then under a presser roller 11 and a trimming device 10, is formed into a rod is wrapped in cigarette paper and cut into cigarettes. When the quantity of tobacco varies the belt guide roller 5 swings on a spring urged lever 6 and a compensating roller 8 also swings on a spring urged lever to allow for variation in the length of the presser run 29 to maintain constant pressure on the tobacco. Suction is applied to the tobacco in the region between the end of the feed belt 2 and the presser belt 4 through permeability of the base of the groove. In an alternative construction the roller 5 is fixed and is close to the end of the feed belt 2 dispensing with the suction region. Variations in lengths of the presser run are compensated by a roller swinging on a spring urged lever pivoting on the axis of the driven roller 7. A presser roller in contact with the presser belt on the driven roller prevents slip between the two.
