948,736. Cigarette-making machines. K. KÍRBER. Feb. 6, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960 (2)], Nos. 1540/60 and 1541/60. Heading A2C. For dense end cigarettes, a tobacco stream has compacted regions D, Fig. 3, formed therein by suction, the stream being subsequently formed to uniform cross-section. In Figs. 1 and 3, tobacco stream 5 is fed to a grooved wheel 10 on which it is held by suction acting through a tapered slot 40, Fig. 6, in a plate 18. At spaced positions the wheel 10 has closed chambers 41 with outlets 20 leading through ports 42 to the suction chamber 17 whereby a strong suction in the chambers 41 produces compacted regions D in the stream which is subsequently trimmed to constant cross-section by trimmers 9. The tobacco removed by trimming is fed to a slower moving wheel 33 from which it is returned to the stream 5 at 36. In a modification, Fig. 7, the compacting is assisted by a mechanical presser 57. In Figs. 8 and 9 a portion of the tobacco removed by the trimmer 9 is fed to a grooved wheel 59 which feeds measured amounts of tobacco on to the compacted portions D, Fig. 9, to restore the stream to uniform cross-section. The trimmers 9 may be situated either before or after the wheel 59.
