Class 130 In a continuous-rod machine of the kind in which tobacco showered on to a tape 18, Fig. 1, by a feed F, e.g. a shoot, at one level passes round the rim of a wheel W under the tape 18 and is discharged at a higher level to rod-forming means S as via compacting means C, the paper wrapper web P and a backing tape 60 therefor run on to the wheel rim in advance of the tobacco so as to underlie it on the wheel. As shown, the tapes 18, 60 are endless bands driven respectively by the wheel W and by a wheel 62, both wheels being powered from a main drive 54. The wheel W has a rim groove 26, Fig. 4, receiving the tape 18 and a rim groove 68 receiving the tape 60, web P and tobacco B. The tape 60 and web P are guided off the wheel W by a bridge 84, Fig. 6, and the tobacco B by the tapered ends 104 of bars 102 which form the sides of a tapering tobacco-compacting channel and are adjustable through screws 106, the channel being completed by a base plate 80 and a top plate 88, reversed to take the belt 18 and clamped to flanges 86 on the plate 80 by screws 90 on swivel brackets 92. After compaction, the tobacco B, still on the tape 60 and web P, passes through a rod-shaping device comprising a fixed lower channel (not shown) tapering in cross-section from a shallow curve to a semi-circle, and a coacting upper channel 118, Fig. 10, of tapering but constantly semi-circular crosssection which is supported by adjustablelength tripod feet 120, located laterally by adjustable screws 138, 140 and clamped in adjusted position by a screw 128 on a swivel bracket 130. After shaping, the tobacco rod is wrapped whilst passing with the tape 60 and web P along a semi-circular channel, a shapped plate 142 folding one edge of both the web and tape about the rod until the tape escapes through a slot 154 to abut vertically against a support 160, when the other edge of the web P, which has been supported vertically by a plate 144 together with the other edge of the tape 60 except when separated therefrom by a depending tang of a plate 146 whilst co-acting with a paster (not shown), is folded with this tape edge over the first web edge by a shaped plate 152 which, as described in U.S. Specification 2,357,785, is cut away to allow the folded tape edge to escape and abut vertically against a support 162 and has a bar 158 which irons the seam in the now completed cigarette rod before the latter passes to a cut-off (not shown).
