[Also in Division F2] A co-ordinate drilling machine comprises a horizontally slidable work-table 15 and a vertically slidable beam 18 and a tool head 20 slidable on the beam and having tool spindles 1-3, and means for automatically moving the tool head or table, or both. Beam 18 is moved vertically by rams 19; head 20 is moved along the beam by an electric motor 21; the spindles are rotated by a three-speed motor 22; and fed by a second motor 23, motor 22 driving through a three-speed gear-box. The high speed is through a gear 24, Fig. 4 (not shown), an electromagnetic clutch 26, gears 27, 31, 34, a second electromagnetic clutch 36, gears 35, 38, to spindles 2. The intermediate speed is through gears 24, 25, 30, an electromagnetic clutch 33, gears 31, 34, clutch 36 and gears 35, 38. The low speed is through gears 24, 25, 30, 32, 28, clutch 29, gears 27, 31, 34, clutch 36 and gears 35, 38. Spindles 1 and 3 are driven through shafts 4 and 6, Fig. 5 (not shown), which are identical with shaft 5. The spindle feed drive provides two ratios. The rapid feed train is from motor 23 through gears 43, 44, Fig. 7 (not shown), clutches 45, 52 and gears 53, 54. The slow feed train is through gears 42, 46, 49, 50, 47, 48, 51, clutch 52 and gears 53, 54. Shafts 4a and 6a are identical to shaft 5a and transmit the feed drive to spindles 1 and 3 through gears 56, Fig. 4 (not shown), clutch 57, and gear pairs 58, 59. Gear 59 is carried on an axially fixed sleeve 60 having an external screwthread 61. A non-rotating quill 62 carries a nut 63 for co-operating with thread 61, so that as sleeve 60 rotates, the quill is moved axially to feed tool holder 66. The clutches can be controlled by a tape, as also can the feeds and speeds.
