Abstract

848,533. Boring, facing and milling machines. CRAVEN BROS. (MANCHESTER) Ltd. June 9, 1959 [June 13, 1958], No. 18930/58. Class83(3). A horizontal boring and milling machine has an axially movable tool spindle a supported within a sleeve b which is also simultaneously axially movable, but at a slower rate of feed than the spindle a. The tool spindle a is keyed to a rotatable member b carried in bearings in the sleeve d, which is moved axially by a lead'screw e engaging a nut f in a collar attached to the sleeve d. A power shaft j drives the screw e through gears i, h. The gear i also drives a gear n and bevel gearing to rotate a pair of screws t, which engage nuts u on opposite sides of a collar v axially secured to the tool spindle a. The gearing is selected to give approximately twice the rate of axial traverse to the tool spindle as a that given to the sleeve d. Gear i may be moved along to drive wheel m, in which case there is no drive to the screw for the sleeve d.
