Abstract

A rib fabric has loops produced by the needles of one bed periodically transferred to the adjacent needles of the other bed the loops transferred in one particular course, however, being transferred in one direction whilst those transferred in another course being transferred in the opposite direction. The result is an openwork fabric having for example a resultant appearance as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 10 (not shown) of loops 3 or 14 of one course transferred in one direction whilst loops 5 or 141 of another course are transferred in the opposite direction. The loops of the sinker wales between the needle wales a1, b1 and b2, a2 of Fig. 1 between which the loops are transferred can be drawn with a smaller loop than those in the other sinker wales. This can be achieved by needle trick spacing in a cylinder and dial machine in which the needles of one bed are provided with transfer bits to enable the loop transfer to be effected on relative shogging of the beds. Instead of varying the needle trick spacing, the needles themselves may be cranked as illustrated in Fig. 12 (not shown) to give the desired spacing.
