3 Claims. (Cl. 66-172) This invention relates to hosiery, and particu- Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view showlarly to flat knit or full-fashioned hosiery. ing the knitting,
In the knitting of full-fashioned hosiery, many Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of expedients have been advanced for creating run the upper part of the stocking with the reinforc- 5 stops. It is a well known fact that unless the ing thread area and transfer courses exagger- 5 leg of the stocking is, in some manner, snagged, ated, and

This is en- As illustrated in the drawing, the stocking A m hanced by the fact that women are oftimes carehas a welt B, and in the present instance, is less in attaching garters to the stocking; and do shown with an after welt C. There forcing thread Withdrawn may be either a single transfer course, or a plu- In Figure 4, the regularly knit course D between rality of such courses in this reinforci thr ad the transfer courses has been omitted, so that area. the transfer courses are adjacent. 50
The drawing illustrates an embodiment of the In Figu es 1 an e e has n n t empt invention, and the views therein are as'follows:- to ill r e an unusual n i n which results Figure 1 is a side view of the stocking with the from' .the introduction of the reinforcing thread reinforcing thread area and transfer courses with the plurality of transfer courses in the area is exaggerated, x thereof. The transfer courses including the in- I termediate regular course appear to bulge out forming a ridge which simulates a purl stitch, and adds considerable to the aesthetic beauty of the stocking. This particular feature, therefore, is adaptable to articles other than hosiery, the same being produced by introducing a reinforcing thread area with a plurality of transfer courses intermediate thereof, and having the transfer courses either adjacent or separated, and one or more regular knit courses between the same.
It has been found, by many experiments and tests, that runs commencing above the reinforced transfer area will not pass through that area even though threads are broken above the area. The invention, therefore, fills a long felt need in connection with full-fashioned hosiery, and the inclusion of such a device into the stocking, enhances, rather than mars, the beauty of the garment itself.
Of course, the mention of numbers of courses, etc. herein has been only for purposes of description, and these are not intended as limitations because various modifications a'nd changes may be made in the described article and method of knitting the same without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereafter claimed.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows: 1. A stocking having a regular welt and after welt with a reinforcing thread knit into two or 5 more adjacent courses of the after welt, and having two or more substantially adjacent transfer courses in the reinforced part of said after welt whereby the transferred area will stand out from the face of the fabric. l0
2. A stocking having a regular welt and after welt with a reinforcing thread knit into two or more adjacent courses of the after welt, and having two or more succeeding transfer courses in the reinforced part of said after welt whereby the I J fabric.
