A railway has a trolley 1, 2 moved along a rail 4 by an endless cable 5 connected to the trolley through springs 6; a box 3 is mounted for side-to-side movement in the trolley and is normally held clear of the lower rail flange 4a by a pivoted lever 7, Fig. 1. Should the cable tension relax by a predetermined amount the spring 6 causes rotation of lever 7 whereby the box 3 drops on to rail flange 4a and the rear wheel 1 runs up cam surface 3a to jam the wheels 1 between the flanges of the rail. In Fig. 3, the cable 5 is connected to a coil spring 10 which, on relaxation of tension in cable 5, expands to move lever 7 via arm 11.
