Abstract

[Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A plug and plug inserting and removing apparatus for use in holes of nuclear reactor pressure vessels comprises a hollow plug within which is situated a means for locking the plug in the hole, and apparatus for gripping the plug, positioning it in the hole, unlocking it and removing it. Fig. 1 shows the plug 1 which contains locking means in the form of a folded aluminium spring 11 having its two ends folded back on themselves to form a pair of bolts 12 which extend through the plug wall to engage an annular recess 6 in the hole 2 to be plugged. To insert the plug, a closing sleeve 22 is placed on the grapple body 14 and the plug retained thereon by a resilient band 23 in the closing sleeve engaging an annular recess 9 towards the top of the plug. The gripper 14, which is carried in tongs 18 of a charging machine is pressed into the hole 2 until the bolts 6 engage, and then retracted. To remove the plug, the closing sleeve 22 is replaced by a similar sleeve (22<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, not shown) in which, however, the resilient retaining ring 23 is placed considerably further from the lower end of the sleeve. Because of this, as the gripper is held downward on to the plug to be removed, annular extension 20 passes between the outermost strip of the spring 11 and the plug body to retract the bolts before the resilient ring in the gripper engages the plug recess 9. When such engagement occurs, the bolts have already been withdrawn, and the plug is consequently removed by reversing the charging machine tongs.
