Abstract

971,438. Article engaging devices. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 25, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 37797/63. Heading B8H. [Also in Division G6] A fuel element grab comprises two parts A, B normally connected by a coupling arrangement C, the part A being suspended by a hoist cable 10 and the part B having jaws 17 which automatically move to grip an internal surface of a fuel element upon lowering of the grab on to the element. Should the part B become jammed so that it cannot be removed from the reactor then by exerting sufficient tractive force on the cable the coupling arrangement C is released enabling the part A to be withdrawn and subsequently lowered on to another part B to which it becomes automatically connected by the arrangement C. The part B is constituted by a sleeve 12 normally surrounding a sleeve 4 constituting the part A. The coupling arrangement C comprises an annulus 32 housing locking balls 30 and elastically supported between two springs 36, 38, the other ends of the springs engaging abutments 40, 44 respectively on the sleeve 12, the spring 36 being several times stiffer than the spring 38. A thickened portion 24 of the sleeve 12 normally holds the balls 30 in a groove 34 in the sleeve 4, thereby connecting the parts A, B. Should the part B become jammed then sufficient tractive force is applied to the cable 10 to compress the spring 36 so that when the balls reach shoulder 26 they move outwardly from the groove 34 and permit withdrawal of the part A. On lowering the part A on to another part B, a shoulder 54 engages the balls and moves the annulus 32 downwards until a shoulder 28 is reached, whereupon the annulus remains stationary. In this condition the spring 38 is compressed so that when the groove 34 arrives opposite the balls the latter move into the groove and the spring returns the annulus to the Fig. 1 position when the weight of the part A is removed from the spring. Brake arms 46 pivoted on the sleeve 12 and biased by springs 50 move outwardly to engage a channel wall and prevent dropping of the part B when the part A is removed, the arms 46 being retracted by a ramp surface 52 on the part A when the latter is moved into a part B.
