Abstract

A rotary hub contains radial slots accommodating the sliding vanes and runs in a roughly cylindrical body which has inlet and outlet ports for the gas or liquid handled and an inner wall forming cams. Each vane is so shaped that it can tilt sideways in its slot, thus forming a sealed line contact with one of the slot walls near the mouth. The vane tip extending beyond the line of contact is thinner than the rest of it. Thus when the cams thrust the vanes back into their slots as the hub rotates, the line of contact moves radially inwards with the vanes. The gas or liquid exerts a pressure over a large area of the vane so as to keep it in the inclined position.
