Abstract

1,258,983. Rotary positive-displacement pumps and compressors. B. N. OSTBERG. Sept. 3, 1969 [Sept. 12, 1968; Nov. 8, 1968], No. 43550/69. Heading F1F. A rotary-casing part 111 of a pump, or compressor, has a surface 115 of uniform diameter and in contact with a non-rotary member 113 carrying a vane with parts 120a, 120b pressed outwardly by an elastomeric tube or rod 36. Sealing of the ends of working chambers 116 is ensured by pressure exerted on a flange 42 and an end wall 111b of the casing by outgoing fluid in a chamber 44, which has ports 52 in the flange, slight axial movement of the casing being permitted by a recess 46 containing the flange perimeter. The flange may be integral with the member 113 or formed (as shown) by a plate fixed to said member. In another embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the vane has a single part of fixed diametral length, the flange 42 and chamber 44 are dispensed with, and the working chambers are limited axially by the casing end-walls. The casing may be driven directly by a Vee-belt. Sealing of the working chambers both radially and axially may be improved by a resilient liner (60), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), which is supported in the casing by a layer (62) of elastomeric material and engaged by the radially -outermost edges of the vane. Depression of the liner by the vane may be limited by strips or bands (64) of relatively-rigid material within the layer (62). Alternatively, the layer is made of asbestos. It is indicated that the casing may be stationery and the member 113 rotatable. The vane may have a fixed diametral length that can be set to suit the diameter of the surface 115 by ratchet-like means. The edges of the vanes in contact with the casing may have plastics-material inlays. The profile of the surface 115 can be determined by formulae derived from geometric diagrams, Figs. A to D (not shown). A surface similar to the surface 115 may be formed on the member 113, the inner surface of the part 111 being rendered circular in profile and a pair of diametrally aligned and opposed vanes being lodged in said part and coupled to each other to act as a single unit.
