Abstract

Automatic welding apparatus which includes a robot which comprises a base, a rotary support mounted in a rotary manner on the base, a pair of first arms which are able to move in a pivoting manner with respect to each other and which are supported in a rotary manner, each one at a first end via the rotary support, a second arm supported in a rotary manner by the other ends of the first arms and an intermediate part close to its first end, and a hand connected with the other end of the second arm and which is able to rotate about two axes which intersect at right angles. An inner rod is supplied from the advance device to a welding torch secured in the robot's hand. A control device supervises the movement of the robot, the operation of the inner rod advance device and the source supplying energy to the welding torch. When the front end of the welding torch enters into contact with the piece which is to be welded, the inner rod penetrating the torch, the resulting short circuit is detected in order to determine the position of the piece which is to be welded. The amount of inner rod which is to project from the torch is monitored with reference to the position of the piece thus detected.
