Definitions
- the present invention relates to an LED module which is supplied with power by a separate electronic ballast and in particular has temperature monitoring.
- the temperature monitoring of LED modules is solved in various ways.
- the temperature can be monitored from the electronic ballast, or EVG for short.
- a connection between the electronic ballast and a temperature sensor in the LED module is necessary for this.
- the electronic ballast evaluates the signal from the temperature sensor, which is usually transmitted as an analog voltage, in order to determine whether the LED module is overheating and to reduce the supply current if necessary.
- the evaluation of the analog signal is locally limited because the monitoring becomes imprecise as the cable length increases. In contrast, a digital signal would be relatively complex.
- this solution has the disadvantage that the entire LED module is switched off in the event of overheating. Monitoring from the TOE is therefore preferred in the prior art. However, this leads to problems with longer line connections.
- US 2016/134018 A1 discloses a circuit with an LED module according to the preamble of claim 1. Further circuits for power supply of LEDs are in the WO 2012/166791 A2 , US 2011/068696 A1 and EP 2966941 A1 disclosed.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an LED module for power supply with a separate electronic ballast, which enables temperature monitoring in the simplest possible way.
- the object is achieved by an LED module according to claim 1 and by an LED module in conjunction with an electronic ballast according to claim 8.
- a special feature of the LED module of the present invention is that the thermal switch only bridges part of the LEDs in the one or more rows of LEDs in the LED module in order to short-circuit only this part of LEDs when a predetermined temperature is exceeded. If only some of the LEDs are switched off by short-circuiting when the specified temperature is exceeded, this is usually sufficient to lower the operating temperature of the LED module to such an extent that thermal failure can be prevented. On the other hand, there is an advantage that the LED module is not completely separated from the supply current. Even when the thermal switch is activated, the remaining part of the LEDs still generates light, so that at least emergency lighting is still provided.
- At least two LED groups are bypassed each with a thermal switch, each group comprising at least one LED.
- the thermal switches have different predetermined trigger temperatures at which they short-circuit the respectively bridged LED group.
- different graded temperatures can be defined for switching off the groups of LEDs. For example, when a first temperature threshold is exceeded, a smaller group of LEDs can be switched off so that the switching off of some LEDs is not yet noticeable in the overall illuminance. Only when a second higher temperature threshold is exceeded is the avoidance a larger group of LEDs additionally short-circuited from damage. According to the invention, however, some of the LEDs still remain in this state and continue to be supplied with power, so that at least one emergency lighting is maintained. It is also possible for more than just two groups of LEDs to be bridged, each with a thermal switch.
- the at least two LED groups only include LEDs from the same row. Since the current through the LED row remains constant through the supply of the ECG, when the LEDs in one or both groups are short-circuited, the remaining LEDs are supplied with the same supply current as before. This prevents the non-short-circuited LEDs from receiving a higher supply voltage in order to prevent these LEDs from overheating.
- an LED group bridged by a thermal switch which has one or more LEDs, is surrounded on all sides by a plurality of LEDs in a flat arrangement.
- the surrounding LEDs can be LEDs that are not bridged by a further thermal switch, or can be LEDs that are bridged by a further thermal switch, which is preferably triggered at a higher temperature than the first thermal switch.
- the centrally arranged LEDs are switched off first, so that no heat nest is created within the two-dimensional arrangement of the LEDs.
- the several LEDs which surround the LED group bridged with a thermal switch on all sides, connected in series with the bridged LED (s) of the LED group in the same row. This prevents the other LEDs from being supplied with a higher voltage when a group of LEDs is short-circuited, because the ECG keeps the current through the row of all LEDs constant.
- At least some of the plurality of LEDs which surround the LED group bridged with the thermal switch on all sides are not themselves bridged in a thermal switch. Since these LEDs have a greater mean distance from one another due to the arrangement around the circumference of the bridged LED group, the risk of these LEDs overheating when the LED group is switched off is low.
- the invention comprises an LED module, as described above, and an electronic ballast which is connected to the LED module in order to supply it with a constant current.
- the electronic ballast is arranged separately from the LED module. It can be arranged in the same lamp, for example the same lamp housing. It can also be arranged at a distance of at least one meter from the LED module. Since the thermal monitoring of the LED module takes place in the LED module itself, proper operation of the LED module is ensured even with a longer cable length between the ECG and the LED module. Since the ECG provides a constant current, the voltage loss dropping over the line resistance of the supply lines for the ECG is also compensated.
- the LED module is always supplied with the desired current to achieve the desired illuminance.
- the constant current can be set to a predetermined value in the electronic ballast to achieve the desired dimming.
- FIG. 1 a block diagram of an embodiment of the present invention is shown.
- An EVG 2 is connected to an LED module, which in the embodiment according to Figure 1 has only one row of LEDs 4.
- the LEDs are all connected in series and connected to the ECG 2.
- the electronic ballast supplies the LED module with a constant current I.
- two LED groups 8 consisting of two LEDs or a single LED are each bridged with a thermal switch 6.
- the thermal switches 6 have a predetermined temperature at which they trigger in order to short-circuit the bridged LEDs or the individual bridged LED.
- the two in the Figure 1 The thermal switches shown have a different trigger temperature. For example, at a lower temperature, only the individual LED can initially be short-circuited, and the group 8 of two LEDs 4 only at a higher temperature. Due to the short circuit, the LEDs 4 are no longer supplied with current, so that the Operating temperature of the LED module is reduced when the temperature is exceeded. Since the entire row of LEDs is supplied with a constant current I by the electronic ballast, the voltage drop in each non-short-circuited LED always remains the same regardless of the number of short-circuited LEDs.
- the brightness of the individual LEDs is therefore always the same, apart from the short-circuited LEDs. Short-circuiting the LEDs only causes a few of the LEDs in the row to fail in order to maintain the thermal conditions. However, even if one or both of the predetermined triggering temperatures of the thermal switches is exceeded, at least four LEDs are still retained in the embodiment which achieve the desired lighting task.
- the LED module comprises a row of seven LEDs 4.
- an LED group 8 consisting of only one single LED is bridged with a thermal switch 2.
- the bridged LED is arranged in the middle of the non-bridged LEDs.
- the central LED is therefore switched off. Since the middle LED is switched off in a targeted manner, a better power distribution of the remaining LEDs can be achieved when the ambient temperature is unfavorable.
- the heat nest in the middle of the LED group is switched off, so that the power density is reduced. Switching off an LED at the edge would have a smaller effect on the thermal load within the LED module. Short-circuiting the central LED is therefore advantageous in order to switch off that LED which is subject to the highest thermal stress in the two-dimensional arrangement of the LEDs.
- the Figure 3 shows another embodiment similar to FIG Figure 2 , in this embodiment five LED groups 8 that are distributed in the same way as the individual LEDs in the Figure 1 . It is to be understood that each LED group 8 can consist of one or more LEDs. The groups 8 are connected in series with each other (in the Figure 3 not shown) and within each LED group the LEDs are also connected in series. A single thermal switch 6 is provided which short-circuits the middle group 8 when a predetermined temperature is exceeded, as in the previously described embodiments.
- a bimetal switch is preferably suitable as a thermal switch.
- This can be provided directly on a circuit board on which the LEDs are arranged in the LED module.
- electronic switches can also be considered, which perform temperature measurements and short-circuit the bridged LED group by means of an electronic switch, in particular a semiconductor component.

Description
- In
