Definitions
- the invention relates to coin blanks made of a copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy, which are suitable to produce coins with mirror finish embossing, and a method for producing these coin blanks (see, for example, the document DE-U-20117131 ).
- a coin alloy is also known as Nordic Gold known.
- the coin blank When embossing on mirror-finish quality, the coin blank is subjected to increased thermal and mechanical stress as a result of the multiple stroke of the embossing punch. This leads to complications in coin blanks which consist of a CuAlZnSn alloy in that a subsequent coin blank after a few successful mirror gloss embossing tends to cause adhesions or welds on the die. As a result, material particles are torn out of the coin blank in connection with the multiple stroke, which settle on the die. These particles of material would be welded on the following coin and thus no longer allow a mirror-gloss quality when continuing the embossing work. The coins have blind spots, become uneven and unsightly.
- the objective is to provide CuAlZnSn alloy coin blanks that ensure high-gloss, high-quality coins can be produced with high productivity, while maintaining the required physico-physical and optical properties, such as electrical conductivity and color shade.
- a method is to be developed which ensures the provision of these coin blanks.
- the object is to achieve such a surface by pretreating ordinary coin blanks made of a CuAlZnSn alloy, which guarantees the embossing of coins in mirror-gloss quality in large numbers without complex polishing work on the embossing punch.
- the object is achieved in that on the surface of coin blanks, which consist of a CuAlZnSn alloy, an embossing auxiliary layer is applied.
- the embossing auxiliary layer has a layer thickness of ⁇ 1 ⁇ m and preferably consists of a galvanic copper-zinc alloy with a zinc content of 20 to 40% by mass.
- blanks produced according to the invention from a CuAlZnSn alloy can not only be used for embossing high-gloss coins, but in the same way also for embossing analog parts, such as medals, plaques etc. can be used.
- IACS coin blanks are provided according to the invention, which have a recuperator, which consists of a galvanically deposited CuZn alloy with a zinc content of 25 mass -% exists and has a layer thickness of 2 microns.
- the coin blanks equipped with such an embossing auxiliary layer ensure the embossing of Glossy-quality coins with high productivity, ie the costly polishing of the die is eliminated, because a gluing of the coin blank with the die is very durable avoided.
- a violation of the prescribed tolerances of the alloy components and the conductivity values for the coin blank is not effected by the presence of the embossing auxiliary layer, since it accounts for only a small fraction of one percent relative to the total mass of a coin blank.
- the color value and the corrosion resistance of the basic alloy Nordic Gold are retained and are in no way impaired.
- the embossing auxiliary layer is kneaded and mixed with the base material in such a way that it is no longer possible to detect the embossing auxiliary layer on the finished coin and thus the required properties of the base material are also guaranteed on the surface of the coin.
- a batch of die-cut coin blanks as used to coin the general payment values of e.g. 20 euro cents is provided separately for the stamping of nominal in mirror gloss quality.
- the coin blanks are, as usual, first annealed, pickled and drum polished, the last step is limited to 3 min. After an acid pickling with sulfuric acid with the addition of oxidizing agent and re-polishing with a ball mixture of stainless steel, a CuZn25 alloy layer having a layer thickness of 1 to 6 microns is electrodeposited on the thus pre-treated coin blanks in a plating drum using a basic copper-zinc alloy bath.
- the coated coin blanks are subjected after passing through a rinsing step of a short-time annealing at 600 ° C in a nitrogen-hydrogen protective gas atmosphere and then polished dry by means of polishing balls in a drum.
- the process guarantees effective mass production of coin blanks made of a CuAlZnSn alloy, which have an embossing auxiliary layer and which are outstandingly suitable for embossing collector coins etc. in mirror-finish quality with high productivity.
