Definitions

  • the present invention relates to food product slicers of common types, namely straight feed (rotating blade in the vertical plane) as shown a prior art example in Fig. 1, gravity feed as shown in a further prior art example in Fig. 2 (rotating blade at greater than 37 ° , to vertical plane). It also applies to manual or automatic machines (the product table (5) being motor driven along a linear path to bring the product into contact with the blade).
  • a product food slicer normally has a main housing (1) to support all parts of the machine and a gauge plate (4) to support and guide the front face of the product. To provide rigidity to the gauge plate (4), it is mounted on a stiffener casting (3).
  • An index knob (2) is provided to operate the thickness adjust mechanism to controllably vary the slice thickness, the index knob (2) being currently located on the right front corner of the main housing (1).
  • index knob (2) is such that it is totally covered by the product table (5) when it is in the home position or fully withdrawn position, making it hard to read the thickness indicator scale (6).
  • a food product slicer comprising a rotating blade, a product table mounted for reciprocating movement in a direction parallel to the plane of the blade and a gauge plate mounted on the table essentially parallel to the plane of the blade to guide the product and the spacing thereof from the plane of the blade being adjustable to control the thickness of product slices, wherein a control to provide adjustment of the spacing is mounted on the gauge plate.
  • the index knob (2) is mounted to the back of gauge plate (4) on the top front comer. It puts the index knob (2) within easy reach of the operator. It also locates the index knob in a much cleaner area of the machine, away from the path of juices, blood, fat and other waste by-products.
  • the casting also has a clear window (5) showing the gauge plate setting (6), which is in the line of sight of the operator.
  • the numeral markings (6) indicating the gauge plate opening may be lit using optical fibres or a neon lamp operating at line voltage.
  • Gauge plate opening indicating drum (6) is moulded in a plastic with optical properties which enable it to capture ambient light, conduct it and emit in a concentrated form throughout the edges, thus giving a luminous effect to markings.
  • any number of ways such as synchronous belts (15) and pulleys (13) and (14) lead screw (10) and nut (13), cams and linkages, flexible shaft, universal joint, gears, flexible coupling etc., well known in the trade can be employed to transmit and convert the rotary motion of the remotely located index knob (2) into linear motion of the gauge plate (4).
  • the use of a timing belt (15) and pulleys (13) and (14) to transmit, along-with a lead screw (10) and nut (13) to convert rotary to linear motion is a preferred embodiment.
  • the lead screw (10) could be movable while the nut (13) is fixed to the frame (12) as shown in Figs. 7 & 8 or vice versa as shown in Figs. 5 & 6, With this arrangement slop and backlash can be eliminated for all practical purposes.
  • gauge plate (3) is designed to automatically close, making the machine safer to use. With zero or very little backlash and a perfectly linear system makes it very easy, cost effective and precise to control the gauge plate operation.
  • An alternative arrangement may produce a non-linear relationship between the angular position of the index knob (2) and the slice thickness, thus for thin slices the incremental ratio of angular movement of the index knob to slice thickness is increased, enhancing control of slice thickness.
  • Such a non-linear relationship could be created by driving a lead screw (10) of varying pitch from the index knob (2), the nut (13) being in the form of a peg engaging the lead screw (10).
