Definitions
- photoelectrophoretic processes form a subclass of the electrophotographic reproduction processes. They can be used to reproduce single-color or multi-color halftone or line art templates.
- Photoelectrophoretic imaging methods are e.g. in U.S. Patent Nos. 3,384,565, 3,384,566 and 3,385,480. All photoelectrophoretic methods have in common the use of particles of matter which serve simultaneously as receivers of the electromagnetic radiation imparting the image information and as a medium for the image fixed on the final support. The particles must at the same time be electrically sensitive to light and have a body color suitable for imaging.
- pigment particles i.e.
- the resulting suspension is placed between two electrodes, of which e.g. one is see-through.
- An electrical voltage is applied to the electrodes so that the pigment particles are exposed to an electrical field.
- the electric field can also be generated by a corona discharge. be modified.
- an alternating field can be superimposed on the field that is constant over time.
- the suspension can now - e.g. through the transparent electrode - with which the radiation carrying the image information is exposed. In certain cases, the exposure can also take place shortly before the electrical field is applied.
- the electrical photosensitivity of the particles is expressed in the fact that the particles are preferably deposited on one or the other electrode as a function of the amount of light irradiated. As a result, a positive image of the original is created on one electrode and a negative image on the other.
- the opposite electrode which is referred to in the context of the present invention as an “image electrode”, has pigments only at those points where it has been exposed. If this condition is not met, the image has a more or less dense haze, i.e. a non-image background.
- charge control agents such as e.g. in U.S. Patent No. 4,219,614 (Frederick A. Stahly, Eastman Kodak Company).
- charge control agents have often been adopted from liquid toner systems by electrostatic copying processes. They usually consist of molecules that contain an ionizable part and a part that is well compatible with the suspension medium (non-polar).
- Calcium petroleum sulfonates which e.g. by Orogil S.A. (France) under the name OLOA 246F °. These are calcium salts of aromatic sulfonic acids that contain a long, linear hydrocarbon chain. The molar weight is approximately 1000.
- the charge control agents often have a dispersing effect at the same time, i.e. the spatial distribution of the pigment particles in the suspension is improved. This in turn has a positive influence on the halftone reproduction and on the resolving power of the reproduction process.
- a further improvement in the state of dispersion and a fixation of the pigment powder on the image carrier after the evaporation of the suspension medium can be achieved by polymeric additives which are soluble in the suspension medium. Examples include poly (12-hydroxystearic acid), polyisobutylene, polymethacrylic acid dodecyl ester, polymethacrylic acid octadecyl ester and polyvinyl toluene.
- the photoelectrophoretic sensitivity of a display system e.g. the minimum amount of light that is needed to achieve a certain density of pigment particles on the image electrode. Ideally, this amount of light is as small as possible, while on the other hand, as mentioned, no particles should be deposited on the image electrode without exposure.
- the invention relates to a method for photoelectrophoretic imaging, a suspension of light-sensitive pigment particles between two electrodes, at least one of which is transparent, emitting an electric field sets and is exposed imagewise, characterized in that an isoindoline of the formula as the photosensitive pigment is used, in which R 1 and R 3 are cyano, -COOR or -CONHR ', in which R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic aromatic radical and R' is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic aromatic radical, R 2 and R 4 are cyan, or wherein R 3 and R 4 together with the intervening C atom form a heterocyclic 6-ring.
- R 1 and R 3 are the groups -COOR or -CONHR, then R preferably represents C 1 -C 6 -alkyl, C 5 -C 6 -cycloalkyl or optionally by halogen, C i - C 4 alkyl or alkoxy substituted phenyl.
- heterocyclic radicals R are the pyridyl, quinolyl, benzimidazolyl, benzoxazolyl or benzthiazolyl radicals. If R 3 and R 4 together with the intermediate C atom form a hererocyclic ring, then preferably a 4,6-.
- Dioxotetrahydropyrimidine, a 2,4-dioxo-5-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine or a 2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline residue Dioxotetrahydropyrimidine, a 2,4-dioxo-5-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine or a 2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline residue.
- Isoindolines of the formula are preferred wherein R 5 , R 6 or R 7 is H, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or phenyl optionally substituted by halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or alkoxy, and in particular the isoindoline of the formula (11), in which R 5 Is methyl, R 6 and R 7 H.
- the pigments of the formula I mentioned are for the most part known compounds which can be obtained by the processes described in FR Pat. No. 1,537,299, for example starting from 1,3-diiminoisoindoline according to the following formula:
- the compounds of the formula (II) can be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula by the process described in DE-OS 2 814 526 can be obtained with the corresponding barbituric acid, wherein R 5 has the meaning given.
- the pigments are preferably in finely divided form, the average particle size expediently being below 10 ⁇ and advantageously between 0.1 and 5. It is advantageous if the particles are of uniform size.
- the pigments are expediently used together with a charge control agent.
- the calcium salts of aromatic sulfonic acids are particularly suitable as such.
- polymers which are soluble in the suspension liquid such as polyisobutylene, polyvinyltoluene, dodecyl or octadecyl polymethacrylic acid, and poly (12-hydroxystearic acid) are recommended.
- the pigment suspension is tested in an exposure apparatus which consists of two transparent, parallel electrodes made of Nesa glass at a distance of 100 ⁇ m.
- the electrode area is 10 cm 2 , the applied electrical voltage 1050 V.
- One half of the electrode surface is exposed by means of a projector, the other half is darkened.
- the optical density on the electrode opposite to the incidence of light is measured by means of a spectrophotometer, specifically at the absorption maximum of the pigment, which is 475 nm.
- the optical density on the darkened half is referred to below as fog density, the optical density on the exposed side as image density.
- the pigment suspension obtained according to Example 1 is left to stand in the dark for 12 days before the test.
- the results of the test are shown in the following table:
- the pigment suspension described in Example 4 is tested on an image forming apparatus which essentially consists of a horizontal, planar Nesa glass electrode and a steel roller covered with paper.
- a step gray wedge is projected onto the transparent electrode from below, while a voltage of 700 volts is applied between the plate and the roller.
- the image created on paper is evaluated using reflectance densitometry. This results in a fog density of 0.0, a sensitivity of 50 Ixsec and a maximum image density of 0.4.
- the gradient steepness y is approximately 0.9. The properties of the suspension are retained over several months.
- Example 6 The procedure is as in Example 6, except that a “Kodacolor e ” color negative is projected onto the transparent electrode through a Kodak Wratten 0 filter No. 47. After drying the image on the paper and cleaning the transparent electrode, magenta and cyan components are applied in an analogous manner. A polychromatic image with good resolution and halftone reproduction is obtained.
- a 6% dispersion of N-2 "-pyridyl-8,13-dioxodinaphthol2,1-b; -2 ', 3'-d) furan-6-carboxamide is produced in a laboratory sand mill. 2 parts of this 6% dispersion , 3 parts of a 1% solution of OLOA 246F 8 in Isopar G® and 15 parts of Isopar G® are mixed using ultrasound treatment and the resulting dispersion is tested as in Example 1. The results (mean values and standard deviations from 4 measurements each) are from following table:
