Description
- Die Erfindung betrifft bestimmte Polyestermaterialien, die geeignet sind, als Mittel zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes (Viskositätsindex-Verbesserer) in synthetischen Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen verwendet zu werden, und die den Polyester enthaltenden Schmiermittel. Die Erfindung betrifft insbesondere einen Polyester auf der Basis einer dimeren Fettsäure, eines Glykols ohne Wasserstoffatome an den alpha-Kohlenstoffatomen (gehindertes Glykol) und dessen Verwendung als Viskositätsindex-Verbesserer in synthetischen Esterschmiermitteln.
- Die Viskosität synthetischer Esterschmiermittel tendiert bei hohen Temperaturen zu einer Verdünnung. Da Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen einem breiten Temperaturbereich ausgesetzt werden, ist es wünschenswert, daß die Viskosität nur wenig mit der Temperatur der Flüssigkeit variiert. Die Beständigkeit der Flüssigkeit gegen eine Viskositätsveränderung wird als Viskositätsindex (VI) des Schmiermittels bezeichnet. In klassischer Weise wird die VZ nach einem von Dean und Davis, Ind. Eng. Chem., Bd. 32, Seite 104 (1940), beschriebenen Verfahren bestimmt. Heutzutage werden die Viskositäten üblicherweise bei 40 und 100ºC bestimmt, worauf dann der Wert des VI durch Verwendung der Tabellen gemäß ASTM-D-2270-74, die Centistoke (cSt = mm²/s) für die kinematische Viskosität verwenden, bestimmt wird. Je größer der VI ist, umso idealer ist das Schmiermittel, d.h. umso größer ist die Beständigkeit des Schmiermittels gegen ein Verdicken bei niedrigen Temperaturen und ein Verdünnen bei hohen Temperaturen. Es ist allgemein bekannt, Schmiermitteln Verdickungsmittel einzuverleiben, die einen den Viskositätsindex verbessernden Effekt haben.
- Ein anderes wichtiges Merkmal von Schmiermitteln ist ihr Verhalten bei niedrigen Temperaturen; insbesondere der Gießpunkt und der Trübungspunkt sind wichtige Parameter. Ersterer zeigt die Temperatur, bei welcher ein Fließen unmöglich wird; er wird genau in ASTM-D-97 beschrieben, während der Trübungspunkt, d.h. die Temperatur, bei welcher eine Trübung sichtbar wird, in ASTM-D-2500 beschrieben wird.
- Selbstverständlich sind auch andere Parameter, z.B. die Oxidationsbeständigkeit, die Korrosivität gegen Metalle und ein Quellen der Dichtung wichtige Merkmale für praktische Anwendungen.
- Die Entwicklung zufriedenstellender Schmiermittel, die eine gute Leistung bezüglich Viskosität, Eigenschaften bei niedriger Temperatur, Oxidationsbeständigkeit und Korrosivität zeigen, ist problematisch gewesen.
- In der US-A-3 472 755 (Emery Industries) wurde offenbart, synthetische Esterschmiermittel herzustellen, die einen Polyester zur Verbesserung der Viskosität enthalten, der durch Veresterung langkettiger Dicarbonsäuren, insbesondere polymerisierter ungesättigter Fettsäuren und Glykole, auf speziellen gehinderten Glykolen, wie Neopentylglykol, hergestellt wurde. Nach Herstellung der Säure enthielt er überschüssige Säure, die durch Behandlung mit einem Glycidylester entfernt wurde. Die Säurezahl dieser Polyesterviskositätsverbesserer lag gut unter 1,0, die Hydroxylzahl betrug typischerweise jedoch etwa 20. Der Viskositätsindex und die Eigenschaften bei niedriger Temperatur der offenbarten Schmiermittel waren zufriedenstellend, die erstere war jedoch nicht außergewöhnlich und bedurfte einer weiteren Verbesserung; ebenso wäre es wünschenswert gewesen, die Stabilität gegen Hydrolyse und Oxidation weiter zu verbessern und die Korrosivität gegen Metalle, insbesondere Kupfer, zu verringern. Gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung wird mindestens eine dieser Eigenschaften erheblich verbessert.
- Die Korrosivität gegen Metalle ist insbesondere der Azidität zugeschrieben worden, weshalb in der Vergangenheit großer Wert auf eine wirksame Entfernung der Restazidität des Polyesters gelegt wurde. Aus diesem Grund sind Entsäuerungsverfahren für Schmiermaterialien entwickelt worden, die die Zugabe von und die Reaktion mit Glycidylestern beinhalten. Dieses Verfahren wird u.a. in der US-A-3 472 775, 3 649 570 und 3 585 138 offenbart. Es wurde nun gefunden, daß ein Polyester auf der Grundlage dimerer Fettsäuren, eines Glykols ohne Wasserstoffatome an den alpha-Stellungen und eines C&sub3;- C&sub1;&sub2;-Monoalkohols als Kettenabbruchmittel in angenähert äquivalenten Mengen der Hydroxylgruppen und Carboxylgruppen eine wertvolle neue stabile Verbindung ist. Dieser Polyester ist ein ausgezeichneter Viskositätsverbesserer, insbesondere für bestimmte Schmiermittelgrundlagen einer Viskosität unter 5,0, vorzugsweise unter 4,0, mm²/s bei 100ºC. Ferner hat sich dieser Polyester als äußerst scherbeständig erwiesen, wenn er Tests auf dem Kurt Orbahn-Tester gemäß Beschreibung in DIN 51 382 unterworfen wird, und daher führt er auch zu gleichermaßen scherbeständigen Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen, die dadurch erheblich besser als die üblichen Polymethacrylate sind.
- Die Schmiermittelgrundlage ist vorzugsweise ein synthetisches Schmiermittel, insbesondere ein synthetischer Ester.
- Die durch Kombinieren der synthetischen Schmiermittelgrundlage mit niedriger Viskosität und des erfindungsgemäßen Polyesters als Viskositätsindex- Verbesserer (der eine hohe Viskosität hat) erhaltene Schmiermittelzusammensetzung zeigt typischerweise einen Viskositätsindex gut über 200, sogar bis zu 300, kombiniert mit guten Eigenschaften bei niedriger Temperatur; auch eine gute Oxidationsbeständigkeit, geringe Metallkorrosion u.dgl. wurden erhalten. Die Schmiermittelgrundlage ist vorzugsweise ein Ester (eine -mischung), und der breite Bereich von Gemischen aus Schmiermitteln mit niedriger Viskosität und dem erfindungsgemäßen Viskositätsindex-Verbesserer zeigen, wie unten angegeben, ein überraschend hohes Ansprechen auf die Zunahme des Viskositätsindexes.
- In einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung basiert der Polyester auf einer 36 Kohlenstoffatome enthaltenden dimeren Säure, die durch Dimerisation von C&sub1;&sub8;-ungesättigten Fettsäuren, wie Ölsäure, Linolsäure, Linolensäure, nach Entfernung monomerer und trimerer Fraktionen und Hydrierung auf eine Wasserstoffjodzahl unter 10 erhalten wurden.
- Das Glykol, auf dem der Polyester basieren kann, ist ein Glykol mit 5 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen und keinen Wasserstoffatomen an den alpha-Kohlenstoffatomen (ein gehindertes Glykol). Bevorzugt wird Neopentylglykol (2,2-Dimethylpropandiol-1,3), es kann jedoch auch ein Ethylhomolog desselben verwendet werden. Ferner ist es möglich, ein weniger gehindertes Glykol, wie 2,2,4-Trimethylpentandiol-1,3, zu verwenden, jedoch dann in Verbindung mit einem Glykol ohne Wasserstoffatome an den alpha-Kohlenstoffatomen.
- Der als Kettenabbruchmittel eingesetzte Monoalkohol ist ein C&sub3;-C&sub1;&sub2;-Monoalkohol, vorzugsweise aliphatisch mit einer primären Hydroxylgruppe. Stärker bevorzugt hat der Alkohol eine verzweigte Kette und/oder enthält 6 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatome. Bevorzugte Alkohole sind Pentyl-, Heptyl- und Octylalkohol, 2-Ethylhexanol-1, 3,5,5-Trimethylhexanol-1, Isodecylalkohol und Isotridecylalkohol.
- Der Polyester wird durch Erhitzen und Verestern einer Reaktionmischung von dimerer Säure, einem gehinderten Glykol und einem Monoalkohol in den erforderlichen annähernd äquivalenten Mengen der Carboxyl- und Hydroxylgruppen hergestellt, wobei die Mischung unter Entweichenlassen des Reaktionswassers erhitzt wird. Die Zugabe eines Veresterungskatalysators, z.B. p-Toluolsulfonsäure, einer organischen Metallverbindung, wie Tetrabutyltitanat, oder einer Organozinnverbindung ist aufgrund einer verminderten Reaktionstemperatur und Reaktionszeit für einen wirksamen Betrieb vorteilhaft.
- Bei der Herstellung der Reaktionsmischung für den Polyester ist es empfehlenswert, 10 bis 70 Äquivalent-% Monoalkohol und 90 bis 30 Äquivalent-% gehinderten Glykol pro Äquivalent dimerer Säure zu verwenden. Außerdem ist es gute Praxis zu vermeiden, daß die Bestandteile, insbesondere die Monoalkohole, während der Reaktionsdauer entweichen. Die gewählten Äquivalentprozentsätze führen normalerweise zu einem Polyester mit einem Gewichtsmittel des Molekulargewichtes zwischen 2000 und 12 000, wenn die Veresterung bis zu einer Säurezahl unter 1,0 und einer Hydroxylzahl unter 10, vorzugsweise unter 5, fortgesetzt wird. Um Polyester mit niedrigen Säurezahlen zu erhalten, ist es zweckmäßig, mindestens eine stöchiometrische Menge Glycidylester zuzufügen und damit umzusetzen. Fakultativ wird der Katalysator vor der Verwendung des erhaltenen Esters entfernt.
- Die Erfindung stellt auch Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen bereit, die 30 bis 2 % (Gew./Gew.) eines oben beschriebenen Polyesters als Viskositätsverbesserer und 70 bis 98 % (Gew./Gew.) einer synthetischen Schmiermittelgrundlage zusammen mit üblichen Beigaben umfassen, wobei die Polyestermenge vorzugsweise zwischen 5 und 20 % (Gew./Gew.) liegt.
- Die synthetische Schmiermittelgrundlage umfaßt gewöhnlich eine gesättigte organische Verbindung, die 6 bis 30, vorzugsweise 12 bis 24, Kohlenstoffatome im Molekül enthält. Ester, insbesondere Mono- und Diester, werden bevorzugt. Beispiele sind: 2-Ethylhexylester von C&sub8;-C&sub1;&sub0;-n-Monocarbonsäuren, 2-Ethylhexyldodecanoat, Propylenglykoldipelargonat, Glycerol-tri-n-heptanoat, Trimethylolpropan(TMP)tripelargonat, Pentaerythritoltetrapelargonat, Diisodecylazelat, Diisooctylsebacat. Mit Vorteil können auch Mischungen der jeweiligen Ester verwendet werden. Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen vollständig auf Estergrundlage werden aufgrund ihrer ausgezeichneten Leistungseigenschaften bevorzugt.
- Es wurde festgestellt, daß beim Kombinieren der niedriger viskosen (dünnen) Esterschmiermittelgrundlagen mit einem erfindungsgemäßen Polyester zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes erhebliche und unerwartete Erhöhungen des Viskositätsindexes erzielt werden können, so daß VI-Werte in der Größenordnung über 200, oft über 240 bis sogar zu 300, erhältlich sind. Die den Polyesterviskositätsverbesserer und die Esterschmiermittelgrundlage umfassende Estergesamtzusammensetzung kann bequemerweise durch Mischen der Bestandteile, wahlweise bei Temperaturen bis zu 80ºC, hergestellt werden. Diese Mischungen können auch durch schrittweise Veresterung der verschiedenen Alkohole und Carbonsäuren erhalten werden.
- Übliche Beigaben zu den erfindungsgemäßen Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen sind: Antioxidationsmittel, Antikorrosionszusätze, Metalldeaktivatoren, Chinizarin, Tricresylphosphat; diese liegen üblicherweise insgesamt in einer Menge bis zu 5 % der Gesamtzusammensetzung vor.
- Ein Polyester zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes wurde hergestellt, indem man in einem Autoklaven eine Charge aus etwa 3200 g einer aus den folgenden Verbindungen bestehenden Mischung umsetzte:
- 2.4 Mol dimere Säure ("Pripol 1009" der Unichema, Gouda, Niederlande, enthaltend 99 % C&sub3;&sub6;-Dicarbonsäure, Wasserstoffjodzahl 5)
- 1,6 Mol Neopentylglykol,
- 1,0 Mol 2-Ethylhexanol-1.
- Die Veresterung erfolgte bei 230ºC in einer Stickstoffatmosphäre unter Rückfluß von 2-Ethylhexanol, wobei 0,05 % (Gew./Gew.), bezogen auf die Charge, Tetrabutyltitanat als Katalysator verwendet wurde. Nach 2-stündigem Umsetzen bei 230ºC wurde ein weiteres Mol 2-Ethylhexanol zugefügt, und es wurde weiter unter Vakuum zum Rückfluß erhitzt, bis die Säurezahl auf einen Wert unter 1,0 gesunken war. Danach wurden 2,6 % (Gew./Gew.) des Glycidylesters einer synthetischen verzweigten C&sub1;&sub0;-Fettsäure zugefügt, und dann wurde ein Vakuum angelegt, um überschüssiges 2-Ethylhexanol abzudestillieren und die Säurezahl auf 0,06 zu senken. Der erhaltene Polyester, der eine Hydroxylzahl von 4 hatte, hatte laut Berechnung ein Gewichtsmittel des Molekulargewichtes von 2100. Viskositätsindex 181.
- Der Polyester zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes wurde nach der Arbeitsweise von Beispiel 1 hergestellt, jedoch wurden die folgenden Ausgangsmaterialien in den Autoklaven gegeben:
- 8,5 Mol dimere Säure "Pripol 1009", wie oben beschrieben,
- 8,5 Mol Neopentylglykol,
- 1,0 Mol 2-Ethylhexanol-1;
- Als Katalysator wurde 0,05 % (Gew./Gew.) Zinn-II-oxalat zugefügt. Der so hergestellte Polyester hatte eine Säurezahl von 0,09, eine Hydroxylzahl von 5, und das berechnete Gewichtsmittel des Molekulargewichtes betrug etwa 5900. Der Viskositätsindex konnte wegen der hohen Viskositätswerte nicht bestimmt werden (berechneter Wert laut Theorie 271).
- Die nach dem Beispielen 1 und 2 hergestellten Polyester zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes wurden bei 20ºC mit einer Esterschmiermittelgrundlage gemischt, bestehend aus der durch Verestern von 2-Ethylhexanol-1 mit einer Mischung von n-C&sub8;- und n-C&sub1;&sub0;-Monocarbonsäuren (Molverhältnis 60:40) erhaltenen Estermischung. Die die Schmiermittelgrundlage und den Polyesterviskositätsverbesserer 1 und 2 in einem Verhältnis von 86:14 (Beispiel 3) und 72:82 Gew.-% (Beispiel 4) enthaltenden Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen wurden nach den oben angegebenen Verfahren auf ihre Viskositätseigenschaften und Eigenschaften bei niedriger Temperatur untersucht. Die Ergebnisse sind unten zusammengefaßt: Viskosität Beisp. Viskositätsindex Gießpunkt unter
- Wie aus den obigen Daten ersichtlich ist, hatten die Schmiermittelzusammensetzungen einen sehr hohen Viskositätsindex, kombiniert mit ausgezeichneten Gießpunkten und guten Viskositäten bei -40ºC.
- Der Polyester zur Verbesserung des Viskositätsindexes von Beispiel 2 wurde mit verschiedenen Esterschmiermittelgrundlangen in unterschiedlichen Prozentsätzen gemischt, und die Viskositätsindices wurden nach dem oben angegebenen Verfahren bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse sind unten zusammengefaßt: Ester, basierend auf Viskositätsindex als Funktion des Polyesterprozentsatzes (Polyester gemäß Beispiel 2) 2-Ethylhexylalkohol + C&sub8;-C&sub1;&sub0;-Monosäuren (60:40 Gew./Gew.) TMP + C&sub7;-Monosäure Dipropylenglykol + C&sub9;-Monosäure Isodecylalkohol + C&sub9;-Monosäure TMP + C&sub9;-Monosäure Diisodecylazelat 2-Ethylhexanol + C&sub7;-Monosäure 2-Ethylhexanol + C&sub1;&sub2;-Monosäure Glycerol + C&sub9;-Monosäure Vergleich: Pentaerythritol + C&sub5;, C&sub7;, C&sub8;, C&sub1;&sub0;-Monosäuren (2:6:1:1 Gew./Gew.) * berechnete Werte, während die anderen Daten gemessene Werte sind
Claims (10)
1. Polyester auf der Basis einer dimeren Fettsäure, eines Glykols ohne
Wasserstoffatome an einem alpha-Kohlenstoffatom, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
ein C&sub3;-C&sub1;&sub2;-Monoalkohol als Kettenabbruchmittel vorliegt und daß annähernd
äquivalente Mengen an Säure- und Alkoholgruppen vorliegen.
2. Polyester nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die dimere Säure
36 Kohlenstoffatome enthält und eine Hydrierungsjodzahl unter 10 hat.
3. Polyester nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Glykol
Neopentylglykol (2,2-Dimethylpropandiol-1,3) ist.
4. Polyester nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß der Monoalkohol ein verzweigtkettiges C&sub6;-C&sub1;&sub0;-Alkanol ist.
5. Polyester nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Anspruche, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß der Polyester eine Säurezahl unter 0,5 und eine Hydroxylzahl
unter 10, vorzugsweise unter 5, hat.
6. Polyester nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß das Gewichtsmittel des Molekulargewichtes des Polyesters im
Bereich zwischen 2000 und 12 000 liegt.
7. Polyester nach irgendeinem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß der Polyester 10 bis 70 Äquivalent-% Monoalkohol und 90 bis 30
Äquivalent-% Glykol pro Äquivalent dimerer Säure umfaßt.
8. Schmiermittelzusammensetzung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie 30 bis 2 %
(Gew./Gew.) eines Polyesters nach irgendeinem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche
und 70 bis 98 % (Gew./Gew.) einer synthetischen Schmiermittelgrundlage mit
einer Viskosität unter 5,0 mm²/s bei 100ºC zusammen mit üblichen Beigaben
umfaßt.
9. Schmiermittelzusammensetzung nach Anspruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß die synthetische Schmiermittelgrundlage ein Monoester ist, der 6 bis
30, vorzugsweise 12 bis 24, Kohlenstoffatome im Molekül enthält.
10. Esterschmiermittelzusammensetzung nach Anspruch 9, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß die synthetische Schmiermittelgrundlage ein gesättigter Mono- oder
Diester ist.
