Abstract
The i.c. engine timing gear adjuster is intended for a camshaft of two concentric shafts, one inside the other in relative rotation. The outer one runs in bearings in the engine and cannot move in the axial direction, having fixed cams actuating only the inlet or exhaust valves. The other cams on the outer shaft rotate coaxially with it. The outer shaft contains slots extending in the peripheral direction for components movable through a preset angle, and coupling the latter cams to the inner shaft. The two shafts are adjustable w.r.t. each other through the same angle and lockable together at the desired setting. A drive gear (13), rotating on the inner (3) or outer shaft (1), forms the planet carrier of an epicyclic gear train, and is lockable in the peripheral direction in relation to both shafts. The planetary pinions (16) mesh with a sun wheel (18) fixed to one shaft and an annulus (19) fixed to the other one.
