Abstract

474,259. Variable speed planetary gearing. ELLOR, J. E. June 4, 1936, No. 15627. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A supercharger is driven through a compound epicyclic gear, one driving member of which is driven by the engine crank-shaft and the other by one or more exhaust turbines and both the crank-shaft and the exhaust gases operate at the same time to effect the drive, means being provided to vary the amount of power given by the turbines. A shaft F, driven from the crank-shaft of the engine, is integral with a carrier D<1> having mounted on it on one side planet wheels D meshing with a pinion C<1> on the spindle C of the supercharger, and on the other side pinions D<2> meshing with a sun wheel E driven through non-reversible worm gearing H, H<1> by one or more turbines located in the exhaust stream. A clutch M<2> permits the sun wheel E to be engaged with the worm device H, H<1> or to be locked to the casing G<2> of the mechanism. A turbine may be disposed in each manifold of a V-type engine, and be regulated by a controlled byepass, the two turbines having a common shaft carrying the worm wheel H<1>.
