Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung optischer Wellenleiter aus Glas nach Art einer
Gradientenfaser.
Für bestimmte Anwendungszwecke werden Wellenleiter aus Glasfasern benötigt, deren Brechungsindex in
radialer Richtung verschieden ist. Hierzu muß die Zusammensetzung in Längsrichtung gleich, in radialer
Richtung aber verschieden sein. Der Durchmesser ist dabei so groß, daß ein sich in Wellenform um die
Längsachse fortpflanzender Lichtstrahl nicht auf die Grenzfläche von Glas und Umgebung auftrifft.
Es wurde bereits versucht, Fasern mit einem Brechungsgradienten durch eine Ionenaustauschbehandlung
herzustellen, infolge starker Verunreinigungen ist die Dämpfung aber zu stark.
Auch ist die genaue Einstellung der Ionenaustauschtiefe nicht möglich, so daß sich ein genaues Gefälle der
Zusammensetzung und des Brechungsindex nicht erzielen läßt.
Die Erfindung hat ein Verfahren zur Herstellung optischer Wellenleiter nach Art einer Gradientenfaser
zur Aufgabe, welches einen sehr geringen Anteil an Verunreinigungen und Gaseinschlüssen zur Folge hat
und Wellenleiter mit sehr geringer Dämpfung der s Lichtfortpflanzung erzielt.
Diese Aufgabe wird durch das Verfahren der Erfindung gelöst, wonach auf einem Grundkörper
stufenweise eine Schicht mit von Stufe zu Stufe verändertem Brechungsindex aufgebracht wird und der
,ο so entstandene Schichtkörper zum Wellenleiter ausgezogen
wird.

Anhand der Zeichnungen sei die Erfindung näher erläutert. Es zeigt

Die Aufbringung der Schichten kann auf verschiedene Weise erfolgen, besonders günstig z. B. durch
Flammhydrolyse.
Wie die F i g. 1 zeigt, wird durch einen Flammhydrolysebrenner 14 eine von mehreren Glasschichten 10 aul
einen z. B. zylindrischen Grundkörper 12 aufgebracht Gasförmiger Brennstoff und Sauerstoff oder Lufi
werden von einer nicht gezeigten Quelle durch ein Rohi in den Brenner 14 geleitet und erzeugen dort die
Flamme 16.
Für das aufzubringende Material enthalten ζ. Β Behälter Flüssigkeiten, die mit einem geeigneten Ga!
durchperlt werden. Die Zufuhr erfolgt in bestimmter Mengen und Drücken. Beim Durchperlen werdei
verdampfte Teile der Flüssigkeit vom Gas mitgenom men und mit dem Gas vermischt. Die Mischung wird ii
der Flamme 16 zu feinteiligen Glaspartikeln hydroli siert, deren Strom auf den Grundkörper 12 gerichte
und auf dem rotierenden und in Längsrichtuni verschobenen Körper zu einer gleichmäßigen Schich
O5 niedergeschlagen wird. Die Verschiebung ist nicht nötif
wenn mehrere Brenner 14 in einer Reihe oder radialer Abstand vorgesehen werden.

ienten enthalten, so werden entsprechend viele flüssigkeitsbehälter vorgesehen, von denen einer oder
mehrere auch ein Flüssigkeitsgemisch enthalten können.
Durch Temperaturregelung der flüssigen Komponenten
mit bekannten Dampfdrücken sowie Regelung des Durchsatzes und Drucks der Trägergase lassen sich
genaue Dampfmengen für die Mitnahme und Hydrolisierung einstellen. Auf diese Weise kann die Zusammensetzung
der feinteiligen Glaspartikeln mit der gewünschten radialen Änderung des Niederschlags von m
Schicht zu Schicht genau eingestellt werden.
Da die Lichtabsorption der Schichten möglichst gering sein soll, kommt als Material Glas optischer
Qualität in Frage. Besonders günstig ist Schmelzkieselsäure, die zur Erzielung eines radial unterschiedlichen iS
Brechungsindex mit einer den Index beeinflussenden radial unterschiedlichen Materialmenge dotiert wird.
Hierzu sind zahlreiche Stoffe geeignet. Nur als Beispiel seien genannt die Oxide von Titan, Tantal, Zinn,
Niobium, Zirkon, Aluminium, Lanthan, Germanium. Der Zusatz wird zweckmäßig nur in der zur entsprechenden
Einstellung des Brechungsindex gerade ausreichenden Dotiermenge beigesetzt, schon weil ein Übermaß ja die
Lichtdurchlässigkeit beeinträchtigt. Bei Herstellung von Wellenleitern bleibt die maximal zugesetzte Dotiermenge
vorzugsweise unter etwa 25 Gew.-% der Gesamtzusammensetzung an der jeweiligen Stelle.
Die Gesamtdicke der einzelnen Schichten bestimmt sich nach der niedergeschlagenen Menge der feinteiligen
Glaspartikeln, die über den Durchsatz und die Niederschlagsdauer geregelt werden kann. Durch
Sintern erhält: man eine dichte, gleichmäßige Schicht etwas geringerer Dicke. Bei ausreichender Temperatur
werden die feinteiligen Glaspartikeln beim Niederschlagen gleich gesintert, andernfalls wird die Sinterung
anschließend durchgeführt.
Wie die Fig.3 zeigt, kann der Grundkörper 12 mit
einem Diamantbohrer 62 herausgebohrt, mit Fluorwasserstoff ausgelaugt, oder auf andere Weise entfernt
werden. Er kann also von beliebiger Zusammensetzung sein und normale oder sogar übermäßige Verunreinigungen
oder Einschlüsse enthalten, sofern er nach Zusammensetzung und Wärmedehnung mit der Schicht
10 vereinbar ist; geeignet ist also z. B. auch Graphit. Möglich ist aber auch die Verwendung eines Hohlkörpers
als Grundkörper, auf dessen Oberfläche die Schichten aufgebracht werden.
Nach weiterer Ausgestaltung werden die Schichten verschiedener Zusammensetzung anstatt auf die Außenfläche
des Grundkörpers auf die Innenfläche des in der Fig.4 gezeigten hohlzylindrischen Grundkörpers 24
aufgebracht, der z. B. durch Ausbohren eines festen Glasstabs, Polieren und Waschen mit Flußsäure
hergestellt wird. Für seine Zusammensetzung und Zulässigkeit von Verunreinigungen und Einschlüssen
gilt das oben für den Grundkörper Ausgeführte. Auf die geglättete und gereinigte Innenfläche werden dann die
Schichten 26 verschiedener Zusammensetzung aufgetragen.
Anstatt vermittels der beschriebenen Flammhydroly- fto
se können eine, mehrere oder alle Schichten in anderer, an sich bekannter Weise aufgetragen werden, z. B.
durch Radiofrequenzsputtern, chemische Dampfniederschlagung, Aufbringen und Sintern einer Glasfritte,
Aufpinseln, Aufbürsten, Sprühen oder Tauchen einer Mischung von Glasbildnern, Dotiermitteln und organischem
Träger, gegebenenfalls mit zwischengeschalteter Trocknung nach Aufbringen einer jeden Schicht. Auch
die Aufbringung unter Anwendung verschiedener Methoden ist möglich. Gegebenenfalls wird der
Gegenstand z. B. zur Glasbildung und Austreibung eines organischen Trägers nach Aufbringen jeder Schicht
oder mehrerer oder aller Schichten gebrannt.
Für die Herstellung eines Wellenleiters wird beim Vorgehen nach den F i g. I1 2 die Aufbringungsfolge der
Schichten gemäß der F i g. 4 umgekehrt. Wird der Grundkörper nicht ausgebohrt, so verringert sich beim
Ausziehen zur Faser 34 lediglich der Durchmesser, während beim Ausziehen des Hohlkörpers die Mittelbohrung
verschwindet und der Körper zur Faser mit festem, durchgehendem Querschnitt wird.
Die zunächst scharf abgesetzten Zusammensetzungsunterschiede der einzelnen Schichten werden beim
Erhitzen etwas gemildert, weil etwas Dotiermittel von Schicht zu Schicht diffundiert. Es ergeben sich dann die
abgerundeten Übergänge der Schaubilder der F i g. 7 und 8, wobei als günstige Auswirkung sich im Einzelfall
die Zahl der für eine radial unterschiedliche Zusammensetzung benötigten Schichten sogar verringern kann. Im
übrigen ändert die Verkleinerung des Durchmessers beim Ausziehen nicht die Kurve des unterschiedlichen
Brechungsindex, d. h. Kurven 38 (F i g. 7) und 40 (F i g. 8) sind im wesentlichen gleich.
Als Beispiel sei ein Gegenstand mit einer radial verschiedenen Zusammensetzung zwecks Verwendung
als lichtfokussierertde Wellenleiterfaser herzustellen. Die kennzeichnenden Parameter dieser Faser können
durch die Gleichung definiert werden:

Körper mit dem Radius r, no den Brechungsindex im Mittelpunkt und F die Brennweite bezeichnet. Der
Brechungsindex innerhalb eines Kreiszylinders ist eine Funktion nur des Radius an diesem Punkt. Die auf den
Zylinder fallenden und parallel zu seiner Längsachse wandernden Lichtstrahlen werden in einer Längsentfernung
entlang dem Zylinder gleich seiner Brennweite gebündelt. Das folgende Beispiel erläutert die Errechnung
und Koordinierung der Werte der obigen Gleichung.
Es soll eine lichtfokussierende Wellenleiterfaser aus dotierter Schmelzkieselsäure hergestellt werden, mit
einem Durchmesser von 0,127 mm, einem Brechungsindex am Mittelpunkt no von annähernd 1,4662, einem
Brechungsindex nr an der Peripherie des Wellenleiters
von 1,4584 (der Brechungsindex von reiner Schmelzkieselsäure für Natriumlicht der Wellenlänge 5893 A wird
allgemein mit 1,4584 angenommen). Es beträgt nach der obigen Gleichung die Brennweite F einer solchen
lichtfokussierenden Wellenleiterfaser 2,75 mm. Dies ist auch durch die F i g. 8 erläutert, in der eine lichtfokussierende
Wellenleiterfaser 34 eine radial abgestufte unterschiedliche Zusammensetzung und damit einen,
dfr abgestuften Kurve 40 entsprechenden radial
abgestuften verschiedenen Brechungsindex hat. Dieser ändert sich im wesentlichen gemäß der Formel

maß aus mehreren Schichten mit jeweils unterschiedlicher
Zusammensetzung. Bei der z. B. zum Sintern und Ausziehen erforderlichen Erhitzung diffundiert das
Dotiermittel von einer zur jeweils folgenden Schicht. Infolgedessen wird die abgestufte Kennlinie der radial
unterschiedlichen Zusammensetzung geglättet, d. h., die Stufen der Zusammensetzungskurve sind infolge der
Dotiermitteldiffusion abgerundet, wie dies auch aus den F i g. 7 und 8 hervorgeht. Die Diffusion kann auch die
Anzahl der für eine gewünschte radial unterschiedliche Zusammensetzung erforderlichen Zahl der Stufen oder
Schichten verringern.
Obwohl die Körper 30 und 28 wesentlich größere Durchmesser als die Faser 34 und eine dieser fehlende
Zentralbohrung 36 haben, so ist dennoch der radial verschiedene Brechungsindex für beide, d. h. sowohl für
die Körper 28 und 30 wie auch für die Faser 34, im wesentlichen der Gleiche. Infolgedessen sind die
Kurven 38 und 40 der Fig.7 und 8 einander im wesentlichen gleich, nur daß der Scheitelpunkt der
Kurve 38 an den beiden Kanten der Mittelbohrung 36 liegt. Wie zuvor erwähnt, fällt diese Bohrung beim
Ausziehen zusammen, so dai? der Brechungsindex der Peripherie der Brechungsindex im Mittelpunkt der
endgültigen Faser wird.
Der weiteren Erläuterung ohne Beschränkung diene das folgende weitere Beispiel.
Ein Grundkörper aus Schmelzquarz mit einem Durchmesser von ca. 3,2 mm und einer Länge von 25 cm
wird an einem geeigneten Handgriff befestigt. Flüssiges SiCU wird in einem ersten Behälter auf einer
Temperatur von 2O0C und flüssiges TiCU in ,einem
zweiten Behälter auf einer Temperatur von 88° gehalten. Der Dampfdruck der beiden Flüssigkeiten bei
diesen Temperaturen beträgt 190 mm Hg. Trockener Sauerstoff wird durch beide Flüssigkeiten geperlt, und
zwar durch das SiCU mit einem Durchsatz von 5000 ccm/Min. und durch das TiCU mit 118 ccm/Min. Hierbei
werden die Dämpfe beider Flüssigkeiten vom Sauerstoff aufgenommen und mitgeführt, und zwar im Ver'iältnis
zum Sauerstoff von 2,3 Mol% TiCU und 97,7 Mol% SiCU. Bei der Hydrolyse in der Flamme eines Brenners

40 entstehen feinteilige Glaspartikeln der Zusammensetzung 3 Gew.-% TiO2 und 97 Gew.-% SiO2, mit einem
Brechungsindex von 1,4662 für Licht der Wellenlänge 5893 Ä. Diese werden als Schicht einer Dicke von
0,4445 mm auf einen rotierenden und seitlich verschobenen Grundkörper aufgebracht. Nach Aufbringung der
ersten Schicht wird der Sauerstoffstrom durch das flüssige TiCU auf etwa 117,7 ccm/Min. verringert, und
eine zweite Schicht mit geringerem TiO2-Gehalt wird niedergeschlagen. Nach Aufbringung einer jeden
Schicht wird der Sauerstoffstrom durch das flüssige TiO2 stufenweise verringert, so daß mehrere Schichten
mit stufenweise abnehmendem TKVGehalt und daher auch abnehmendem Brechungsindex niedergeschlagen
werden, bis die äußerste Schicht aus reinem SiO2 besteht. Jede stufenweise Verringerung des Sauerstoffdurchsatzes
wird im Hinblick auf die gewünschte radial stufenweise unterschiedliche Zusammensetzung eingestellt.
Die Herstellungsdauer eines 20 cm langen Körpers mit 5 cm Durchmesser beträgt in diesem Falle
etwa IV2 Stunden. Anschließend werden die Schichten in einem eine Sauerstoffatmosphäre enthaltenden, etwa
1500° heißen Induktionsofen gesintert. Der Grundkörper aus Schmelzquarz wird entweder vor oder nach dem
Sintern mit einem Diamantbohrer herausgebohrt Der rohrförmige Körper wird dann in 50%iger Flußsäure
gewaschen und damit gereinigt. Der Außendurchmesser des Körpers wird nach dem Sintern 4,445 cm betragen,
Er wird dann in einen Induktionsofen gebracht, erhitzt und in Sauerstoff bei 2000° gezogen. Dabei verringert
sich der Durchmesser, und die Mittelbohrung fällt zusammen. Er wird weiter gezogen, bis die gewünschte
Abmessung des Durchmessers des Wellenleiters er reicht ist. Bei einem typischen Außendurchmesser eine:
Wellenleiters von 0,127 mm beträgt die Brennweite etwa 2,75 mm.
Das Verhältnis zwischen der Zusammensetzungsän derung und der Änderung des Brechungsindex ist in de
Regel wie auch im vorigen Beispiel im wesentlichei linear. Das Verhältnis kann aber auch ein anderes seir
was zumindest zum Teil von dem verwendeten Materia abhängen wird.

Claims (10)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung optischer Wellenleiter aus Glas nach Art einer Gradientenfaser,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß auf einen Grundkörper stufenweise eine Schicht mit von Stufe
zu Stufe verändertem Brechungsindex aufgebracht wird und der so entstandene Schichtkörper zum
Wellenleiter ausgezogen wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Grundkörper ein Stab ist.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch I1 dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß die Schicht auf der Innen- oder Außenfläche eines Hohlkörpers aufgebracht wird.
4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1—3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß vor dem Ausziehen
der Grundkörper entfernt wird.
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die durch die Entfernung des
Grundkörpers freigelegte Fläche mechanisch vorpoliert und mit einer Flamme nachpoliert wird.
6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die freigelegte Fläche nach jeder
Politur mit Fluorwasserstoff gewaschen wird.
7. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1—3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Schichten durch
Radiofrequenzsputtern, durch chemische Niederschlagung aus der Dampfphase oder durch Aufbringen
einer Glasfritte und anschließendes Sintern der Schicht hergestellt wird.
8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß wenigstens eine der Schichtstufen
durch Flammhydrolyse aufgebracht wird.
9. Verfahren nach Anspruch 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß bei einer Schicht aus Schmelzkieselsäure
zur stufenweisen Dotierung wenigstens eines der Oxide von Titan, Tantal, Zinn, Niobium, Zirkon,
Aluminium, Lanthan oder Germanium verwendet wird.
10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 7, 8 oder 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Ziehen zum Wellenleiter in
einer im wesentlichen aus Sauerstoff bestehenden Atmosphäre erfolgt.
