Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf eine Brennstoffelektrode für die anodiscbe Oxydation von gasförmigen
oder im Elektrolyten gelösten Brennstoffen in elektrochemischen Brennstoffelementen.
Eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für den Einsatz von Brennstoffelementen auf breiter Basis ist das Vorhandensein von hochaktiven und billigen Katalysatoren
für die anodische Oxydation von aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht interessanten Brennstoffen wie Methanol, Formaldehyd, Ameisensäure, Kohlenmonoxid, Oxalsäure und
andere. Ein besonderes Anliegen der Forschung ist dabei die Entwicklung edelmetallfreier Katalysatoren,
da gerade die Edelmetalle infolge ihres relativ geringen Vofkommens und ihres hohen Preises einer weiten
Verbreitung als Katalysatoren im Wege stehen.
Für alkalische Elektrolyte kennt man in den
Raney-Nickel-Elektroden schon leistungsfähige, edelmetallfreie Elektroden. Wegen des einem alkalischen
Elektrolyten anhaftenden Nachteils, das aus kohlenstoffhaltigen Brennstoffen entstehende Kohlendioxid
aufzunehmen, wobei der Elektrolyt verbraucht wird, versucht man mehr und mehr, auf Brennstoffzellen mit
saurem Elektrolyten überzugehen, aus denen das gebildete Kohlendioxid gasförmig entweicht Hier sind
jedoch Raney-Nickel-Elektroden nicht verwendbar.
Es ist bekannt, als Katalysatoren für Brennstoffelektroden in Brennstoffelementen mit saurem Elektrolyten
Carbide, Nitride, Silicide oder Boride von Übergangsmetallen zu verwenden, da diese Stoffe eine gute
Korrosionsbeständigkeit in saurem Medium zeigen. Am besten untersucht ist hier das Wolframcarbid, da von
diesem die höchste katalytische Aktivität zu erwarten ist
In der nachveröffentlichten DE-PS 20 46 354 ist bereits vorgeschlagen worden, den Kobaltkomplex des
5,14-Dihydrodibenzo(5,9,14,18)-tetraaza(14) annulens
(im folgenden mit CoTAA bezeichnet) als Elektrokatalysator für Sauerstoffkathoden in elektrochemischen
Zellen zu verwenden.
In der GB-PS 12 13 364 wird zwar angegeben, daß Kupfef-Phthälöcyänin (Cu-Pc), ein mit dem obengenannten Komplex verwandter Typ, sowohl als Sauerstoff- als auch als Brennstoffkatalysator wirksam wäre.
Versucht man jedoch, diese Angaben nachzuarbeiten, so stellt man fest, daß dieses Cu-Pc zwar einen guten
Sauerstoffkatalysator darstellt, daß jedoch, auch bei Variation der Versuchsparameter, gegenüber Brennstoffen nicht die geringste Aktivität meßbar ist, wie sich
z. B. aus der Arbeit von H, Jahnke et al. in »Fortschritte
der chemischen Forschung«, Band 61, Seite 139-181, insbesondere Seiten 142 und 165 ergibt
Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung ist es, eine Brennstoffelelctrode zu entwickeln, die einen organisch-chemischen Katalysator enthält, welcher gegenüber billigen Brennstoffen eine ausreichende Aktivität
zeigt
Diese Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß gelöst durch
die Verwendung des Kobalt-Chelates des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo(53,14,18)tetraaza(14)annulens in einer
Brennstoffelektrode für die anodische Oxydation von gasförmigem Formaldehyd, Kohlenmonoxid oder von
im Elektrolyten gelöstem Formaldehyd, Hydrazin oder
gelöster Ameisensäure oder Oxalsäure in Brennstoffelementen.
Diese Aktivität des CoTAA gegenüber Brennstoffen ist deshalb überraschend, weil bisher bei derartigen
Chelaten wie z. B. den Phthalocyaninen ausschließlich
eine Aktivität gegenüber Sauerstoff beobachtet wurde.
Die Darstellung dieser Chelate ist von H. Hiller, P. Dimroth und H. Pfitzner in Liebigs Ann. Chem. 717
(1968) 137 -147 ausführlich beschrieben, so daß hier nur
erwähnt werden soll, daß sie aus o-Phenylendiamin,
Propargylaldehyd und den entsprechenden Metall(II)-acetaten gewonnen werden können und folgende
Strukturformel haben:
Die Erfindung soll nun an einigen Beispielen näher beschrieben werden:
1. Beispiel
1 mg CoTAA wird mit der vierfachen Menge Acetogenruß in einem Mörser verrieben und dann
zwischen zwei etwa 2 mm dicke Gi aphitfilzscheiben
gebracht Die so erhaltene Elektrode wird in einen Plexiglashalter mit einer Stromableitung aus einer
Ti-Pd-Legierung eingespannt.
einer üblichen Halbzeilenanordnung mit Hilfe der potentiodynamischen Dreieckspannungsmethode
durchgeführt Das Potential an der Testelektrode wird dabei in steigender und fallender Richtung linear
zwischen 0 und 800 mV, bezogen auf eine Wasserstoff
elektrode im gleichen Elektrolyten, variiert. Als
Elektrolyt dient vornehmlich 2n-H2SQ», in einigen
Fällen auch 2n-KOH. Die Messungen werden bei 700C
durchgeführt, wobei zunächst unter Stickstoff die Nullkurve registriert wird und erst dann die Zugabe der
Brennstoffe in einer Konzentration von 1 Mol/T erfolgt. Gasförmige Brennstoffe perlen dabei durch die
Elektrode hindurch. Bei den hier verwendeten geringen Spannungsänderungsgeschwindigkeiten von 20 bis
100 mV/min entsprechen die anodisch gemessenen Ströme direkt der katalytischen Aktivität des Katalysators.
Die bei- diesen Messungen erhaltenen Ergebnisse gehen aus der folgenden Tabelle hervor:

Besonders günstig ist es, wenn man die mit dem Katalysator versehene Elektrode vor Inbetriebnahme
so lange bei Potentialen zwischen 500 und 800 mV beläßt, bis ca. zwei Elektronen pro Katalysatormolekül
abgegeben wurden. Dabei wird der Katalysator partiell
elektrochemisch oxydiert Ein Potential über 800 mV ist zu vermeiden, da das Molekül dann durch Oxydation
irreversibel zerstört wird.
Das Dauerlaufverhalten der erfindungsgemäßen Elektroden ist günstig: nach einem anfänglich etwas
stärkeren Absinken blieb die Aktivität in der Folgezeit praktisch konstant oder sank nur unbedeutend weiter
ab.
2. Beispiel
In 2 ml einer Lösung von Polymethacrylsäuremethylester
in Trichloräthylen im Volumverhältnis 1 :35 werden 100 mg Aktivkohle und 11 mg CoTAA eingerührt
Von dieser Paste wird soviel auf eine durch Sandstrahlen aufgerauhte Ti-Pd-Scheibe von 2 cm2
Fläche aufgestrichen, daß eine FJächenbelegung von 0,8 mg CoTAA/cm2 erreicht wird. Diese Elektrode zeigt
bei 700C in 2H-H2SO4+Im-HCOOH bei 500 mV eine
Aktivität von 4,5 mA/cm2, bei 350 mV eine solche von
1,6 mA/cm2.
Durch die Erfindung erhält man eine Brennstoffelektrode für Brennstoffelemente, die für die anodische
Oxydation von Ameisensäure, Oxalsäure, Hydrazin, Formaldehyd und Kohlenmonoxid recht hohe Aktivitäten
hat, deren Werte teilweise höher liegen als die von Platin. Die Beständigkeit des Katalysators hat sich dabei
während Dauerlaufversuchen als gut erwiesen.
Claims (2)
1. Verwendung des Kobalt-Chelates des 5,14-Dihydro-dibenzo(5,9,14,18)tetraaza(14)-annulens als
Katalysator in einer Brennstoffelektrode für die anodische Oxydation von gasförmigem Formaldehyd, Kohlenmonoxid oder von im Elektrolyten
gelöstem Formaldehyd, Hydra.'dn oder gelöster
Ameisensäure oder Oxalsäure in Brennstoffelementen.
2. Verfahren zum Aktivieren der mit dem Katalysator versehenen Brennstoffelektrode nach
Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie vor Inbetriebnahme einige Zeit bei Potentialen oberhalb
500 mV belassen wird.
