Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf Schmieröle, die gewisse organische Titanverbindungen enthalten, die der
ölbasis eine erhöhte Belastungsfähigkeit verleihen. Es sind Bedingungen für Schmieröle bezüglich einer
Mindestbelastungsfähigkeit festgelegt worden. Die Belastungsfähigkeit üblicher Ölbasen zur Erfüllung der
Bedingungen für Turbinenmotoren ist meist nicht genügend. Es ist daher wünschenswert, die Belastungsfähigkeit dieser Schmierbasen zu verbessern, um sie
zur Verwendung in Turbinenmotoren und für andere Verwendungszwecke, bei denen Hochdruckeigenschaften
benötigt werden, geeignet zu machen.
Es wurde bereits vorgeschlagen, die Belastungsfähigkeit von Schmiermitteln zu verbessern, indem Zusatzmittel,
wie Tricresylphosphat oder synthetische oder natürliche Verdickungsmittel, zugegeben werden. Tricresylphosphat
verleiht zwar Hochdruckeigenschaften, aber diese sind einerseits ungenügend, oder aber es
werden, falls sie genügend sind, häufig andere wünschenswerte Eigenschaften der Ölbasis durch den
Phosphatzusatz nachteilig beeinflußt. Die Verwendung von Verdickungsmitteln liefert, auch wenn diese den
Belastungsbedingungen entsprechen, fließbare Stoffe einer hohen Viskosität. Dies kann vom Nachteil sein,
da eine Anzahl Motorenhersteller fließbare Massen mit einer niedrigen Viskosität bei verminderten Temperaturen
wünschen, die jedoch trotzdem die Belastungsfähigkeit von viskoseren Schmiermitteln besitzen.
Es wurde gefunden, daß die Belastungsfähigkeit von mineralischen Schmierölen wesentlich erhöht werden
kann, indem diesen ein in der Ölbasis lösliches Reaktionsprodukt aus 1 Mol eines Titantetraesters mit
V2 bis 4 Mol eines Glykols mit 2 bis 24 Kohlenstoffatomen
oder ein in der Ölbasis lösliches Polymerisat eines solchen Reaktionsproduktes zugesetzt wird. Die
titanhaltigen organischen Materialien verleihen den Mineralschmierölen Hochdruckeigenschaften, die den
bekannten Bedingungen entsprechen. Die erfindungsgemäßen Zusätze sind weiterhin vorteilhaft, da sie,
unabhängig von der Viskosität des Zusatzstoffes, das Schmieröl nicht verdicken, da diese Zusätze für alle
oder fast alle Verwendungszwecke nur in geringen Mengen Anwendung finden.
Die titanhaltigen erfindungsgemäßen Zusätze sind verträglich, d. h. löslich, dispergierbar oder mischbar,
mit dem Schmierölbasen und können monomer oder polymer sein. Sie können gegebenenfalls mit Wasser
gewaschen werden, um eine Wasser unempfindlichere Form zu erhalten. Wenigstens einige monomere und
polymere Zusätze besitzen Chelatbindungen und haben eine Koordinationsbindung zwischen einem
Sauerstoff- und einem Titanatom. Im allgemeinen wird

durch die bloße Zugabe eines Titantetraesters zu einem Glykol eine exotherme Reaktion in Gang gesetzt, obwohl
es zweckmäßig sein kann, Wärme zuzuführen. Die Reaktion kann bloß bis zur monomeren Stufe
durchgeführt oder direkt bis zu einem polymeren Produkt fortgeführt werden. Wird ein monomeres oder
teilweise polymerisiertes Produkt erhalten, so kann dieses weiterpolymerisiert werden. Die verschiedenen
Produkte können verwendet werden, gleichgültig, ob es sich um viskose Flüssigkeiten oder feste Stoffe handelt,
solange sie nur mit den Ölbasen verträglich sind.
In der USA.-Patentschrift 2 160 273 ist beschrieben, daß gewisse Titantetraester Schmiermitteln auf Mineralölbasis
eine verbesserte Belastungsfähigkeit verleihen. Diese Tetraester besitzen jedoch eine andere chemische
Struktur wie die erfindungsgemäßen titanhaltigen Zusätze. Die Titantetraester sind brauchbare Ausgangsmaterialien
zur Herstellung der erfindungsgemäßen Zusatzstoffe. Weiterhin sind die Titantetraester in
Gegenwart von Wasser instabil und können Titandioxyd bilden, welche als ölunlösliches, festes Produkt
in Schmiermitteln ungeeignet ist.
Erfindungsgemäß können z. B. die folgenden titanhaltigen Verbindungen als Ausgangsstoffe für die
Reaktionsprodukte mit dem Glykol verwendet werden:

Titantetraester, ζ. B. solche mit Alkyl-, Aryl- oder Alkarylsubstituenten sowie kondensierte und polymere
Titanate. Die jeweiligen Kohlenwasserstoffsubstituenten können dabei substituiert sein.
Bevorzugte Zusätze werden durch Kondensation S von Titantetraestern mit einem 1,3-Glykol, vorzugsweise
einem solchen mit 5 bis 12 Kohlenstoffatomen, hergestellt (siehe z. B. USA.-Patentschiift 2 643 262).
Die verwendeten Glykole können substituiert sein. In der genannten Patentschrift sind die Strukturen näher
erläutert, die bei der Verwendung verschiedener Mengenverhältnisse der Reaktionsteilnehmer entstehen.
Besonders geeignet sind gegen Wasser verhältnismäßig unempfindliche Produkte, die durch Waschen des Produkts
mit Wasser erhalten werden.
Ebenso brauchbar sind die in J. A. C. S., Bd. 76, S. 2533 bis 2536, beschriebenen Titanverbindungen,
die aus Titantetraestern und einem Glykol erhalten werden. Erfindungsgemäß werden Produkte verwendet,
die aus 1 Mol Titantetraester mit Y2 bis 4, Vorzugs- a°
weise 2 bis 4 Mol Glykol erhalten wurden. Die polymeren Produkte können aus diesen Verbindungen
durch Erhitzen oder Wasserzugabe und Erhitzen erhalten werden. Die Polymerisation findet zweckmäßigerweise
bei mehr als 250C, vorzugsweise mehr als 400C, statt. Wird bei der Polymerisation Wasser
verwendet, so sind pro Teil Titanester mindestens 1, vorzugsweise 2 bis 20 Teile Wasser, anwesend. Die
erfindungsgemäß brauchbaren Titanverbindungen können monomer und/oder polymer sein. Die erfindungsgemäßen
Zusatzstoffe können definiert werden als mit der ölbasis verträgliche Materialien der folgenden

In dieser steht A für Wasserstoff, einen Kohlenwasserstoffrest eines Titantetraesters oder B; B ist ein
oxygruppenhaltiger Glykolkohlenwasserstoffrest, der eine Glykolhydroxylgruppe enthält. Wie bereits angegeben,
sind die mit der ölbasis verträglichen, aus solchen Materialien gebildeten Polymerisate brauchbar.
Eine für Polymerisate, die allein durch Wärme gebildet worden sind, vorgeschlagene Struktur ist
folgende:

Von den genannten Verbindungen wurden insbesondere die folgenden durch Erhitzen der OGT-Produkte
allein oder durch deren Erhitzen in Gegenwart von Wasser gebildeten Produkte verwendet:
a) das durch Erhitzen von OGT-41 auf 930C in
Gegenwart von Wasser erhaltene Produkt (Beispiel 6, unten),
b) das durch Erhitzen von OGT-41 auf 25O0C in
Abwesenheit von Wasser erhaltene Produkt (Beispiel 7, unten) und
c) das durch Erhitzen von OGT-21 auf 25O0C in
Abwesenheit von Wasser erhaltene Produkt (Beispiel 7, unten).

Die obengenannten erfindungsgemäßen Zusätze für Hochdruckschmiermittel können vom flüssigen bis
zum festen Zustand variieren, solange sie nur mit der Ölbasis verträglich sind. Wenn der Titanzusatz in polymerer
Form vorliegt, ist das Molekulargewicht häufig etwa 800 bis 3000, vorzugsweise 1000 bis 1800, das
Molekulargewicht kann jedoch bis zu 5000 bis 15000 oder 20000 oder mehr betragen. Vorteilhafterweise
werden Polymerisate mit niedrigem Molekulargewicht verwendet, da diese nicht zur Verdickung der ölbasis
neigen. Die polymeren Zusätze mit niedrigem Molekulargewicht besitzen häufig Viskositäten von etwa
0,575 bis 0,85 cSt bei 380C auf der Basis von 1 g in
40 g Toluol.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Schmieröle enthalten genügend Titanzusatz, um die Belastungsfähigkeit der

ölbasis erheblich zu erhöhen. Im allgemeinen beträgt ratur etwa 15 bis 30 Minuten aufrechtgehalten, worauf
die Zusatzmenge etwa 0,001 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent, das Rühren unterbrochen wird. Es setzt sich dann ein
vorzugsweise etwa 0,1 bis 2 Gewichtsprozent. Es weißes, klebriges, unlösliches, elastisches Polymerisat

Wasser gegeben. Die Mischung wurde erhitzt und 1 Stunde auf 8O0C gehalten. Beim Stehen schied sich
die Reaktionsmischung in drei Schichten, und die flüssige organische sowie die wäßrige Schicht wurden
abdekantiert und so 835,0 g rohes Polymerisat erhalten. Dieses gab folgende Analyse:

500 g gewaschenes OGT-21 wurden bei Zimmertemperatur
unter Rühren mit 2000 g Wasser gemischt. Die Temperatur der Mischung wurde auf 100° C
erhöht und diese Temperatur 18 Stunden gehalten, wobei sich ein weißes Polymerisat bildete. Die Reaktionsmischung
wurde abgekühlt und der feste Stoff durch Filtrieren gewonnen. Dieser wurde bei Zimmertemperatur
24 Stunden an der Luft getrocknet und gab folgende Analyse:

100 g OGT-41 wurden mit 200 g Wasser gemischt.
Die Mischung wurde 1 Stunde auf 93° C erhitzt und dann filtriert. Das filtrierte feste Produkt wurde mit
200 g heißem Wasser gewaschen und dann 24 Stunden an der Luft getrocknet. Das getrocknete Produkt
zeigte folgende Analyse:

Ein Polymerisat wurde hergestellt, indem 100 g OGT-41 oder 100 g OGT-21 5 Minuten lang auf
25O0C erhitzt wurden.
7200 g OGT-41 wurden mit 8000 g Wasser in einem Becher aus rostfreiem Stahl gemischt. Die Mischung
wurde unter Rühren auf 95 0C erhitzt und diese Temperatur 20 Minuten gehalten. Dann wurde die
Mischung 12 Stunden bei Zimmertemperatur stehengelassen und die Flüssigkeit vom gebildeten weißen
Polymerisat abdekantiert. Dann wurden 7000 g Wasser zum Polymerisat zugegeben und die Mischung auf
80° C erhitzt. Diese Temperatur wurde 2 Stunden unter Rühren gehalten, worauf auf Zimmertemperatur
abkühlen gelassen und die Reaktionsmischung ^Stun
stehengelassen wurde. Die Flüssigkeit wurde abdekantiert und das polymere Produkt 24 Stunden bei
25° C und 50°/0 relativer Feuchtigkeit auf Papier trocknen gelassen. Das Produkt wog 2640 g und
besaß einen Aschengehalt von 25,8 Gewichtsprozent und ein Molekulargewicht von 1314 in Benzol nach
der Siedepunktmethode.
ίο Es wurden 2640 g Polymerisat hergestellt, indem
drei verschiedene Produkte gemischt wurden, die jeweils entsprechend dem folgenden Verfahren erhalten
wurden: 7,2 Teile OGT-41 wurden unter Rühren mit 6 Teilen Wasser gemischt. Die Mischung
wurde 30 Minuten auf 82°C erhitzt und dann über Nacht stehengelassen. Die klare obere organische
Flüssigkeit und die Wasserschicht wurden vom erhaltenen Polymerisat abdekantiert. Dann wurden
9 Teile Wasser zum Polymerisat zugegeben und nach 30minutigem Erhitzen unter Rühren auf 820C die
Mischung 16 Stunden absitzen gelassen. Die flüssigen Phasen wurden abdekantiert und das Polymerisat auf
Filterpapier gegeben und 24 Stunden bei 25° C getrocknet.
2000 g OGT-41 wurden unter Rühren mit 6000 g Wasser gemischt. Die Mischung wurde erhitzt und
16 Stunden und 40 Minuten auf 6O0C gehalten. Die wäßrige und organische flüssige Schicht wurden vom
gebildeten Polymerisat abdekantiert und diese 24 Stunden bei 25° C an der Luft getrocknet. Das erhaltene
Material zeigte folgende Analyse:

101 OGT-41 wurden in einen 40-1-Becher aus rostfreiem
Stahl gegeben und dann unter Rühren 301 destilliertes Wasser zugegeben, worauf die Mischung
unter Rühren 3 Stunden auf 8O0C erhitzt wurde. Dann
wurde das Rühren und die Wärmezufuhr unterbrochen und der Inhalt des Bechers auf 25° C abkühlen gelassen.
Dann wurde das Butanollösungsmittel und das Wasser vom weißen ausgefallenen Polymerisat abdekantiert,
301 destilliertes Wasser zugegeben und unter gutem Rühren die Temperatur auf 8O0C erhöht. Die Wärmezufuhr
wurde unterbrochen und das Produkt 4 Stunden absitzen gelassen, worauf das Wasser und das Lösungsmittel
abdekantiert wurden. Das Polymerisat wurde 60 Stunden bei 25° C und etwa 30°/0 relativer Feuchtigkeit
getrocknet. Die Ausbeute an luftgetrocknetem Titanpolymerisat betrug etwa 38%· Die Analyse
ergab folgende Werte:

Ursprünglicher pn-Wert des Produktes .. 7,6
Die Wirksamkeit des erfindungsgemäßen Hochdruckschmiermittelzusatzes
in mineralischen Schmierölen ist in den in Tabelle II aufgeführten Versuchen wiedergegeben.

') Minerölbasis enthielt 72 Volumprozent mit Lösungsmittel behandeltes »Mid-Continent Neutralöle von 600 SUS bei 38° C und
28 Volumprozent mit Lösungsmittel behandeltes »Mid-Continent Neutralöl« von 200 SUS bei 38° C; die Mischung besitzt eine Viskosität
von etwa 450 SUS bei 380C.
In einer Mischung, die 0,08 Gewichtsprozent Emery's Dimer der Leinölsäure, 0,02 Gewichtsprozent des
Titanpolymerisats gemäß Beispiel 11 und als Rest die Mineralölbasis von Tabelle II enthielt, betrug der
Ryder-Wert 2223 kg. Die Anwesenheit der verträglichen zweibasischen Säure in der Mineralölbasis gab
daher eine gewisse Verbesserung in der Belastungsfähigkeit des Öles, das den erfindungsgemäßen Titan-
zusatz in einer solchen Menge enthielt, daß etwa 0,03 % Titan anwesend waren.
Ein Teil des Mineralschmieröles kann auch durch ein übliches synthetisches Schmiermittel, z. B. ein
solches auf Esterbasis (s. dazu die USA.-Patent-Schriften 2 499 983, 2 499 984, 2 575 195, 2 575 196,
2 703 811, 2 705 724 und 2 723 286) ersetzt werden. Besonders brauchbare synthetische Schmiermittel sind
z. B. Di-2-äthylhexylsebacat und Di-2-äthylhexylazelat.
Auch in diesem Falle werden wesentlich verbesserte Werte für die Belastungsfähigkeit erhalten.
An Stelle der obengenannten Titanverbindungen können auch solche Verwendet werden, die entsprechend
der Beispiele hergestellt wurden. Die damit erzielten Ergebnisse entsprechen denen der obigen Tabelle.
Claims (5)
1. Schmieröl auf Mineralbasis, gekennzeichnet durch einen Zusatz an einem in der Ölbasis löslichen
Reaktionsprodukt aus 1 Mol eines Titantetraesters mit V2 bis 4 Mol eines Glykols mit 2 bis
etwa 24 Kohlenstoffatomen oder an einem in der Ölbasis löslichen Polymerisat dieses Reaktionsproduktes.
2. Schmieröl auf Mineralölbasis nach Anspruch 1, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt des Zusatzes
in einer Menge von etwa 0,1 bis 2 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf die Mischung.
3. Schmieröl auf Mineralölbasis nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Zusatz
ein Reaktionsprodukt aus 1 Mol eines Titantetraesters mit 2 bis 4 Mol eines Glykols mit etwa
5 bis 12 Kohlenstoffatomen, z. B. einem 1,3-Diol, ist.
4. Schmieröl auf Mineralölbasis nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Ölbasis
außer dem Minarelöl zusätzlich noch eine synthetische Schmierölbasis enthält.
5. Schmieröl auf Mineralölbasis nach Anspruch 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es noch eine
geringe Menge einer zweibasischen Säure enthält.
