Feher et al. describe in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 111 (1989), 1741-1748 describe the synthesis of variously functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes according to structure 1, wherein X = a functional group or a functionalized radical and R = a hydrocarbon radical, by so-called "corner capping" of incompletely condensed polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes - Trisilanols - according to the structure 2 with trichlorosilanes of the type XSiCl 3 in the presence of an amine. This produces as an undesirable by-product of this condensation reaction, the triply stoichiometric amount of ammonium chloride.

It was therefore the object of the present invention, an economical Procedure available too This involves the preparation of compositions that are both functionalized as well as nonfunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes included and in total, i. from the beginning of the reaction to the isolation of the finished product requires a maximum of 12 hours. In particular, however, the method according to the invention should preferably are based on a one-step reaction.
Surprisingly was found that by both a change in pH and at the same time by a change of the solvent system of a polar to a nonpolar solvent in the course of the reaction, the reaction time can be shortened considerably can. OR ') 3, are particularly preferably used, the alkoxy group (OR') having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in particular methoxy or ethoxy group, and the alkyl group (R) having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, in particular from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, but preferably has 3 carbon atoms. Examples of alkyltrialkoxysilanes ge Mäss of the formula RSi (OR ') 3 are isobutyltrimethoxysilane (DYNASYLAN ® IBTMO), isobutyltriethoxysilane, propyltrimethoxysilane (Dynasylan ® PTMO) propyltriethoxysilane, ethyltrimethoxysilane, ethyltriethoxysilane, methyltrimethoxysilane (DYNASYLAN ® MTMS) or methyltriethoxysilane. In the inventive method also trialkoxysilanes can with a substituent of the type X according to the formula XSi (OR ') 3, such as 3-Aminopropytriethoxysilan (DYNASYLAN ® AMEO) 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTMO), 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (DYNASYLAN ® GLYMO), 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (DYNASYLAN ® MTMO), 3-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (Dynasylan ® MEMO) are used. In a particular embodiment, be (DYNASYLAN ® VTMO) or vinyltriethoxysilane used such as vinyltrimethoxysilane alkenyltrialkoxysilanes. For the production of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes to the hydrophobization, for example of polymers which are preferably Fluoralkyltrialkoxysilane, preferably Fluoralkyltrialkoxysilane according to the formula CF 3 ((CF 2) o (CH 2) p) Si (OR ') 3 with o, p = 0 - 12, such as 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-Trifluoroktyltriethoxysilan (DYNASYLAN ® F 8261).
umgesetzt. Hierbei werden vorzugsweise Alkyltrialkoxysilanen gemäß der Formel
RSi(OR')3 zusammen mit Trialkoxysilanen gemäß der Formel XSi(OR')3 eingesetzt,
XSi(OR')3 bzw. X'Si(OR')3 und
ein Silan gemäß der Formel
RSi(OR')3 eingesetzt.
In a further embodiment in particular halosilanes, preferably trichlorosilanes, together used with alkoxysilanes in the process according to the invention.
Surprisingly, the process is also suitable for silsesquioxanes prepared from a single silane. Preferably, however, at least two different silanes are used. These can be both functional groups and carry functional groups. The process according to the invention for preparing a composition which comprises functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes is characterized in that, if at least two different silanes are reacted under base catalysis, the rate constants for the hydrolysis reaction of the silanes used are of the same order of magnitude and not more than about differentiate the factor 10. It is therefore essential that the silanes used as starting material are matched in terms of their hydrolysis rate. Information on the rate constants relating to the hydrolysis reaction of various trialkoxysilanes are reported in Z. Naturforsch. 54b (1999), 155-164. In this way it can be achieved that the functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes have a substituent distribution in accordance with the educt composition of the silanes. If, for example, the silane ASiY 3 and the silane BSiY 3 are used in a molar mixing ratio of 1: 1 in the process according to the invention, the result is a composition which predominantly comprises a functionalized, fully condensed polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane of the type A 4 B 4 may have Si 8 O 12 . In different proportions by weight, but in parts by weight less than the silsesquioxane of the type A 4 B 4 Si 8 O 12 , the composition also has silsesquioxanes of the type A 3 B 5 Si 8 O 12 , of the type A 2 B 6 Si 8 O 12 , of the type Type A 5 B 3 Si 8 O 12 and of the type A 6 B 2 Si 8 O 12 , wherein it should be pointed out that these compounds of the so-called T 8 type are given by way of example only. The mixture may also contain cages of the type T 9 -T 14 as well as quantities of condensed products.
The process according to the invention has the advantage over the prior art processes that the preparation of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes is carried out in a one-step reaction in a time of less than 12 hours. In the process according to the invention, for example, in the preparation of a monofunctionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane according to structure 1, the preparation of an incompletely condensed polyhedral oligomeric silasesquioxane as intermediate, such as, for example, the trisilanol according to structure 2, can be completely dispensed with. For the preparation of trisilanol, the prior art requires large amounts of base, namely lithium hydroxide. For example, according to a process in WO 01/10871, amounts of up to about 50% by weight of lithium hydroxide, based on the silane used, are necessary, and subsequent neutralization with a correspondingly large amount of acid is required. Furthermore, as mentioned above, the process according to the invention has the advantage that functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes are accessible by this process, which have different functional groups, for example methacrylic and epoxy groups in addition to alkyl groups. In accordance with the process of the invention, functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes having tailor-made properties can now be prepared, which in turn make it possible to produce catalysts, ceramic compositions and polymers having particular properties, for example hydrophobicity, increased hardness or increased scratch resistance. The solution of the problem was all the more surprising, especially since it was shown that an increased compatibility of the composition prepared by the process according to the invention, the functionalized polyhedral oligomeric Siliasesquioxane has as a mixture of isomers or as a distributed over a molecular weight range mixture, in ceramic compositions, polymers or solvent systems to observe is. Furthermore, it has been shown that the composition prepared by the process according to the invention, which has functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, has a lower reactivity and, associated therewith, a higher stability than fully functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes according to structure 3. Fully functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes according to structure 3 with X = methacrylic group are, for example, highly reactive and generally do not have the desired stability.
In a particular embodiment the method according to the invention is the same compound as starting material and as basic catalyst used, this is the case, for example, when used as starting material Aminosilane is used.
As already mentioned This method is also suitable for silsesquioxanes that only be prepared from a single silane compound.

The inventive method is particularly suitable for the preparation of a composition functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes.
The composition according to the invention has at least three different functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, which are characterized in that, in addition to substituents of the R type, they can also have substituents of the X-type. For example, a composition of the invention may comprise the three functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes according to structures 5a, 5b and 5c:
Again, it should be pointed out that the composition according to the invention may contain further functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes, so in addition to the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes with a T 8 cage and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes be included with a T 4 - to T 12 cage. Furthermore, dimers of such cages and silsesquioxanes formed by condensation with a so-called ladder structure can be present in the composition according to the invention by condensation. Under a T z cage is understood only the silicon-oxygen clusters in the context of this invention, without further consideration of the substituents X or for example of the type R, wherein n represents the number of silicon atoms in the silicon-oxygen cluster.

The use according to the invention the composition of the invention takes place for the derivatization, synthesis of catalysts or their Starting compounds, as adhesion promoters on metallic, woody or mineral substrates and for the synthesis or modification of ceramic compositions and Polymers.
The compositions of the invention can be used to synthesize and modify polymers in a wide range of applications. Since, on the one hand, the substituent of the type R itself, and on the other hand via a functionalization - ie the substituent of type X - the character and the property of the functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane can be varied widely, in this way the composition of the invention all common polymers be added. This can be both chemical bonding and pure blending. By adding the composition of the invention to a polymer, the rheological properties of a variety of polymers can be favorably influenced, such as the adhesive and bonding properties and the barrier effect to gases and liquids. In particular, organic polymers selected from polyolefins, amorphous polyalphaolefins, polyamides, copolyamides, polyamide compounds, polyethers, polyesters, copolyesters, polyurethanes, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, phenolic resins, Epoxy resins, polysiloxanes, polysilanes, rubbers, rubber compounds, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride copolymers, polystyrene, copolymers of styrene, ABS polymers and olefin copolymers and terpolymers can be modified or formed by the addition of the composition according to the invention, in particular by blending by the addition of the composition according to the invention composites having the desired properties. The polymers modified in this way can be used, for example, in the form of coatings, paints, injection-molded or extruded molded parts, calendered films, lubricants, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fibers, glass fibers or packaging materials. Furthermore, the compositions according to the invention can be used for ceramic compositions, as bioactive and fungicidal products, for electronic materials, in aerospace and for the production of medical prostheses.
In addition to this type of modification, it is also possible to apply the composition according to the invention to a polymer surface. As polymer additives, the effect of the composition according to the invention is that in the resulting polymers they increase the glass, decomposition and thus the use temperature, increase the tensile strength, impact resistance, scratch resistance and mechanical hardness, reduce the density, the thermal conductivity, the thermal expansion coefficient and lowering the dielectric constant and viscosity, changing the surface tension and adhesion, lowering the flammability, flammability and heat development, increasing the O 2 permeability, the oxidation and corrosion stability, simplifying the processing, and restraining shrinkage processes.
Hauptgruppe. The Compositions of the invention can furthermore serve as starting compounds for catalysts. Preference is given to the reaction with metal compounds of Metals of subgroups, lanthanides, actinides and the 3. and 4th main group.

In 860 ml of acetone are 82.075 g (0.5 mol) of propyltrimethoxysilane (Dynasylan ® PTMO, Degussa AG) and 70.89 g (0.3 mol) of 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (DYNASYLAN ® GLYMO) at room temperature. With stirring, a solution of 2.05 g of KOH in 64 g of water is added. The reaction mixture is then stirred for 3 days at 50 ° C. Subsequently, the solvent is removed by distillation in vacuo, the distillation residue is taken up in about 300 ml of diethyl ether and washed several times in a separating funnel with 100 g of water. After drying the organic phase over magnesium sulfate, the diethyl ether is distilled off in vacuo. This gives 88.9 g (yield: 91%) of a colorless, viscous, extremely highly viscous mass which predominantly in the MS-MALDI-TOF analysis (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption / Ionization Time of Flight) T 4 -T 12 cages , but mostly T8, T 10 and T 12 cages. The HPLC analysis shows predominantly cages having three substituents of type X - in this example 3-glycidyloxypropyl group, but also cages having two or four substituents of type X.
A Storage stability test at Room temperature in air gives a stability of 3 weeks, thereafter the product is highly viscous to firm.
Beispiel 2: Synthese einer Zusammensetzung mit (Propyl)5(3-Glycidoxypropyl)3Si8O12-Anteilen (erfindungsgemäß)Example 2 Synthesis of a Composition Having (Propyl) 5 (3-Glycidoxypropyl) 3 Si 8 O 12 Parts (Inventive)
With stirring, 0.12 g of KOH dissolved in 192 g of water are added. The temperature is then raised to 75 ° C and the resulting methanol is removed by distillation. After 5 hours, the pH is concentrated with 0.135 g. Acetic acid is lowered and then allowed to run in 400 ml of toluene. In the course of 1 hour, the butanone-2 is withdrawn at 50-60 ° C under such a vacuum that the required temperature range of 50-60 ° C can be maintained. Then allowed to cool to room temperature and separates the water in a separating funnel. Subsequently, the reaction is allowed to continue in toluene at a temperature of 60 ° C for 2 hours. Thereafter, in the course of a further 2 hours, toluene and residual amounts distilled from water together and the dry product isolated. This gives 96.7 g (99%) of a colorless, viscous, extremely high-viscosity mass, in the ESI analysis (electron spray ionization) coupled with HPLC T 4 -T 12 cages, but predominantly T8, T 9 and T 10 Detect cages. The HPLC analysis shows predominantly cages having three substituents of type X - in this example 3-glycidyloxypropyl group, but also cages having two or four substituents of type X.
A Storage stability test at Room temperature in air indicates that the product is still at 8 weeks unchanged is.
