Pour produire sur ce type de machine des rangées alternantes .de mailles serrées et non serrées, il -est prévu -des. cames 2 et 3, qui sont destinées. à des buts différents, la came 2 étant @de la forme habituelle, ,destinée à pro duire des mailles;
Knitted weft article and its process. manufacturing. The present invention comprises a knitted, shaped weft article and its method of manufacture. The article according to the invention is characterized in that it consists at least for the most part of a knitted fabric which does not flow or which resists sagging, which fabric comprises stitched stitches composed of the yarn: gold weft.
The manufacturing process of this article is characterized by the use of a machine. sorting using .des. needles having several rockers. pivoted, means actuating these needles with several rockers, at intervals determined in advance, to produce stitched stitches, in. first pulling a loop of the newly supplied yarn through a previously formed loop and then passing this new loop tightly over and around said previously formed loop.
The term "pique stitch" is taken here as a synonym of knotted stitch or tight stitch, that is to say non-slip stitch. By the expression "knitted weft fabric" is meant the kind of fabric which is made by feeding a ground yarn or an ordinary knitting yarn, as for the weft, to the needles of a knitting machine, in succession, this term being used to distinguish the fabric according to the present invention from those known as knitted fabrics made on a warp knitting machine.
In attempts made previously to produce a weft fabric. knitted, shaped, having, sinking resistance qualities, it has been considered essential to employ a separate auxiliary hooking yarn, for each needle, in addition to the ordinary knitting or grounding yarn, this auxiliary yarn. liaire being crossed from one needle to the other to produce the anti-sinking effect. However, according to the present invention, the stitched or knotted stitches of the fabric formed are composed, as specified above,
ground yarn or weft yarn used in the manufacture of the knitted fabric.
One kind of knitted article, which can be easily made according to the present invention, is a sock or stocking. of diminished knit, wholly or mainly sinking resistant or substantially sinking resistant. By the expression - "reduced knit stocking" is meant a stocking which is formed during its knitting, to differentiate it from a stocking which is cut to the required shape after its knitting.
The fabric is made resistant to sagging by producing non-fraying knitted loops or stitched stitches in this fabric at regular or predetermined intervals.
The appended -dessin represents, as. for example, several embodiments of the object of the invention.

Fig. 17 shows a double-tab needle having a flexible hook and the needle bed twist acting thereon, as may be employed in a straight machine.
According to a convenient method of making a non-sinking fabric, tightly knotted stitches are formed by tying one needle loop over another, this being advantageously done by using needles with several working tongues. first to pull a loop: of the newly introduced thread, through a released loop and then to pass this new loop tightly around: of said released loop.
There is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 a proportioned, non-sagging shaped fabric made up of alternating rows: of knotted and non-knotted stitches, that is to say of knotted and knotted stitches. For the manufacture of such a fabric, needles with two tabs have been employed, the action being formed in the manner more clearly shown in FIG. '3.
In this figure, the position indicated in A is the one in which the needle was raised to release a previous loop a below: from the upper rocker la and a new thread b is introduced into the hook the, the needle being then lowered to knock down the old loop a on the new loop b, the latter is retained naked in the hook thus producing a regular knitted stitch. During @du following upward movement of the needle, the latter is brought into: position C, in which the loop b is free below the upper rocker 1a.
A small downward movement is then communicated to the needle, sufficient to force the loop b @d: e to pass under the upper rocker la and the back of the lower rocker lb, as shown in position D.
The needle then continues to rise in the position indicated in E which is higher than that indicated in A, and: in this position the loop b has been released below the lower lever lb (this lever has been lowered by contact with said loop b) and another wire c is introduced between the two rockers, la, lb while the needle is held high.
During the movement: descending immediately following the needle, the. loop b starting from the ordinary stitch formed previously, passes upwards along the needle, closes the lower rocker lb on the upper rocker 1a and passes through the hook above this upper rocker 1a, the newly introduced wire loop c being retained between the two rockers. During this part of the movement the loop c is pulled through the loop b, as shown in position F and during the continued movement of the needle,
the loop c goes up on the needle, lifts and closes the upper bottom cule la on the hook the and is lowered on this needle thus becoming tight in the knot on the loop b and constituting a single crochet or tied, as indicated in position G. The cycle of operations is then repeated. The ribbing formed from the non-sagging fabric can be produced either on a circular knitting machine or on a reclining machine. .
For example, a circular knitting machine can be employed, which machine operates to produce a flat shaped or formed fabric with proportionate edges, giving continuous rotary motion to the actuators of the needles.
On such a machine, which is shown in FIGS. 4, 5; and @ 6, several independent proportional ribbing can be produced simultaneously, obtained by using two cams 2 and 3 of needles rotating in the opposite direction and continuously (fig. 6) and also by using two eccentric collectors turning in direction. .opposed and continuously, these cams stand,
moving in the opposite direction being arranged to cross in positions, in the machine where they are away from the needles. needles of the machine are actuated by each: mesh cams, these cams operating alternately, independent yarn feed means being provided for each edge -cost -of fabric to be manufactured and each of these feed means ( . one of which is shown at 4 in fig. 4) being:
moved to. first in one direction and then in the opposite direction by cooperation. with. organs. such as 4a protruding from the locks 12, 12a, -so as to force successive rows to be triquéesi in -of: opposite directions.
To produce on this type of machine alternating rows of tight and loose stitches, it is provided. cams 2 and 3, which are intended. for different purposes, the cam 2 being of the usual form,, intended to produce stitches;
ordinary or unstitched, while the cam 3 is intended to raise the double rocker needles 1 @ to a higher position than the cam 2, so as to force the thread to be brought between the rockers instead of being brought into the hook of the needle and thus to produce, knotted stitches. or stitched in the manner shown in FIG. 3.
It will be noted that when the cams 2 and 3 successively actuate the needles, alternating rows of stitched or non-stitched stitches are produced.
The width of the fabric or each part of the fabric to be knitted. can be varied during manufacture, this being conveniently done by simultaneously raising from an inactive position to an active position a predetermined number of needles, at predetermined time intervals, of each. side of the group or groups of needles in work,
so as to expand the fabric by the required value.
For -this purpose, .teux lifting members 5 (Fig. 4 and 5) can be provided, one .de these members being fixed to a toothed ring 6. circumferentially and the other to a second ring 7 circumferentially toothed to fit both inside an annular recess formed in the first ring 6.
These two elevator rings 6 and 7 are raised and lowered at predetermined intervals by means of several suitably spaced rollers 8, which are normally placed inside recesses 9 formed in a ring. or in a relatively stationary organ 10, but which are forced, at the required intervals,
to rise and -de exit said recesses 9 and thus lift the rings 6, 7 with the lifting members-5. The movement of the rollers 8 can be effected from a projection 11 carried by a lower lock 12 and rotating with this lock, this projection 11 cooperating with an arm 13 sliding radially, articulated to a lower arm 14 extending radially. This arm 14 carries a bevelled nose 1.5 intended, when the arm 14 is moved radially internally,
rotating the ring 16 on which the rollers 8 are mounted.
The elevator rings 6, 7 have circumferential ratchet teeth, constantly engaged with two claw arms 18 and thanks to these arms 18, the rings 6 and 7 are rotated step by step. in opposite directions, to move the lifting members, to a position below the successive needles, to lift these.
The operation of the claws 18 for the rotation of the lifting rings can be effected intermittently from the protruding members 11 indicated above of the lock 12, through a mechanism similar to that employed for moving the 8 riser rollers indicated above.
Another type of circular machine which can be employed is one in which a proportionate plain fabric is produced by the reciprocating motion of the needle actuating means.
In such a machine, the needle actuating cam device is suitably employed and can be adjusted at predetermined intervals to produce either stitched or non-stitched stitches.
Such an adjustable cam device, applicable to a reciprocating circular machine, is shown in FIGS. 7 to 10 of the accompanying drawing.
The central cam 19 on which the needles rise to release the old loops and to grab a new thread, is provided with a vertically movable pointed part 20 which, when in its lowered position (as shown in fig. 7),
causes the needles to rise "to a height sufficient to receive a new thread in their hooks and to produce regular or unstitched stitches. However, when the pointed part 20 is fully raised to the position shown in Fig. 8 , the needles are raised to a position in which the thread is brought between the two levers and stitched or knotted stitches are thus produced.
It will be understood that in the production of stitched stitches the cam moves in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 8.
When the pitted stitches are produced, the needles are obliged to pass through a small auxiliary rod 2.1 during their upward movement to seize the thread, the purpose of this auxiliary cam being to ensure, as indicated previously, that the old bou Thread keys on the needles occupy a position between and behind the needle rockers, so as to lower the lower rocker during the sudden upward movement of the needles.
Two other cam members 22 and 23 are adjusted at the same time as the pointed part 20 of the cam 19. These members, when the pointed part 20 is in the lowered position, are moved downwards into the in position. indicated in fig. 7, -so as to force the gauges of the needles to pass in the path indicated in broken lines in this figure, while when the pointed part 20 is fully raised to produce tight stitches, the two adjustable cam members 22 and 23, are raised to force the needle heels to cross the small auxiliary cam the lo @ ng of the path indicated in broken lines in fig. 8.
If now the pointed part 20 and the other movable members 22, and 23 are adjusted; at the end of each row knitted it will be noted that during movement -of the machine in one direction, -ordi nary stitches: are produced and during the opposite movement, pitted stitches are produced. In this way, a fabric is made which has stitches stitched in alternating rows of knitting. A method of automatically adjusting the cam device on each knitted row is shown in figs. 9 and 10.
The movable pointed part 20 of the central cam 19, as well as the two movable cam members 22 and 23, can be mounted on a single block or frame 2-4 slidable vertically, the cam members 210, 2'2 and 23 being fixed to said block by pins 2'5 cooperating with vertical grooves 2i6 in the fixed parts of the cam device.
A horizontally slidable member 27 moves with the lock inside which the needle actuating cam device is placed. This member 27 has a projection 28 -de cam and is carried by friction inside a support 29 suitable fixed to the lock.
At the end of the movement of the lock in one -direction, the organ 2.7 carried by friction can cooperate with a stop or a relatively stationary cleat 80 and thus move by sliding the member 27 </ B> in a position in which a roller or a caster 31 associated with the vertically displaceable cam block 24, moves downwards from the projection 28 of the member 27, either by its weight or under the influence of a spring '32, thereby lowering the pointed portion 20 and the cam members 22 and 23 into a position to produce ordinary stitches.
At the end of. movement of the lock in an opposite direction, the sliding member 27 is also moved in an opposite direction by engagement with a stop 33 and thus the projection 28 is moved below the roller 31, so as to lift block 24 and with it the elements. cam 20, 22 and 2, 3, the cams actuating the needles. then being set to produce stitched stitches.
If at any time it is necessary - to continue producing successive rows of regular stitches for any length - determined in advance, this can be easily accomplished by moving stop 33 in. a posi iondans which this stop will not cooperate with the sliding member 27.
Another suitable method of accomplishing this is to mount the stopper 33 so as to be slidable and to cause it to be biased upwardly into an active position by a rotating cam 34 or device. equivalent, a spring 35 operative to lower the stopper 33 to an inactive position when the latter is disengaged from the projection of the cam of the organ 84.
By making stockings. according to the present invention, on a straight knitting machine, the non-sagging fabric can be produced by employing two cams for. .different purposes for communicating -movements @of different values to the needle bar and to the needles carried by it.
one cam operating to raise the needles into a position for feeding thread into the hooks of the needles and the other cam operating to lower these needles into, a position: in which thread is fed between the needle rockers , means being employed to bring . each of said. .Cames in operation, as required.
In. reference to fig. 11 and 12, two ca mes 36, and 3-7 are arranged next to each other, side by side, on the regular camshaft 3.8, the needle bar 39 moving vertically in and out from of these cams through. a device 40 with a pivoted lever, por as a cam roller 41, which is held by a spring 42 or other means engaged with the cams and which is intended to be mounted on the latter.
A cam 37 is formed-such that its part 37a with which the roller 41 engages during the feeding of the thread for the stitched stitches is a little lower than the corresponding part 36a of the cam 36 with which this roller engages while, yarn is provided for a row of regular stitches. In this way, the needles are moved to two different heights depending on that of the cams 36 and 3! 7 which acts on the wheel 41.
To bring them alternately. cams 36 and 37 in operation, the roller 41 can: move by sliding on a short axis 43, extending laterally, of the cams and carried by the two arms 40a constituting the lower part of the device 40 with lever. This sliding wheel is displaced at intervals determined in advance from one of the cams, on the other cam, by the intermediary of a pivoted fork 44.
It will be noted that the movement of the roller 41 from one cam to the other must be carried out during one. time of the movement of the machine, when the peripheral faces of the two cameras near the roulette wheel are flush or level with each other. Such a time occurs soon after the wire feeding operation and while the needles are lowered, it is therefore advantageous that the means provided for moving the wheel are operated during this time.
A disposition. to move the wheel 41, this cam is shown in FIG. 13, in. which is fitted at each end of the cam axle 38, a gear wheel 45 meshing with another gear 46 fitted on a shaft 47, which can be extended or not over the entire length of the. machine.
The wheels. 46 are advantageously twice as large as - the wheels 45, so that they rotate twice as slowly as the camshaft 38 and the cams 36 and 37. On each of these wheels 46 is a cam protrusion 48 extending approximately midway around each wheel, this protrusion 48 alternately engaging with casters 49 on levers 50 rotated in their center, these:
levers are connected at their upper ends to a rod 51 extending longitudinally, to which the forked lever 44 mentioned above is fixed.
This arrangement is such that, when the cams 31, 36 have been rotated into a position in which the needles are lowered, that is to say after the thread has been supplied to these needles, a wheel 49 belonging to to a -of the levers 50 is obliged to mount on a cam projection 48 belonging to one of the -gear wheels 46 and .simultaneously a caster 49 belonging to:
lever 50, at the opposite end of the machine, moves the cam protrusion 48 away and the rod 51 is moved longitudinally so as to pivot the forked lever 44 and move the cam roller 41 one step further. cam to another.
In. a variant, instead of: moving the cam roller 41: from one cam to another, the cams. 36 and 3: 7 may themselves be slidably displaced relative to the cam roller on shaft 38 at the required times, while in other variants the shaft. To. cam 38 with cams 36, 37 fixed on it can itself be moved axially so as to bring each of the cams into operation at predetermined intervals.
In another alternative, the caster 41 can be wide enough to cooperate simultaneously with the two cams 36 and 37. In this case, means such as an automatically operating clutch device, can be provided to engage and disengage one of the cams of the shaft 38 as and when desired, the other cam being permanently attached to this shaft.
When a row of stitched stitches is to be produced, it is advantageous that even a little longer length of yarn is drawn or lowered by the usual platens 52 ha, so as to ensure the production of a plain fabric.
To accomplish this, the usual cheva let 53, operating through swiveling latches 54, to move them. turntables 5 # 2 and for pulling the thread moved forward a slightly higher amount in alternating machine movements, ie on alternate rows of knitting.
This can be done by providing at each end: of the displacement of each bridge 53 an adjustable stop 55 carried by an arm or by a bracket 56, adjustably or otherwise attached to a rod or bar 57 extending longitudinally (fig. 7.4 to 16 ) .
When the easel. 53, which is moved in the usual way, reaches one end: of its movement, one of the stops 55 cooperates with a cleat 58a projecting from a wheel 58 mounted on a threaded part 59 extending behind the bridge. and transmits a small rotational movement # to this wheel 58, so as to move the che valet 5.3 forward or backward by sliding in the direction of rotation of this .wheel 58. It will be noted that at the At the opposite end of the movement of the bridge, the second stop 55 rotates the wheel 58 in an opposite direction and therefore moves the bridge. also in an opposite direction.
By these means, the plates 52. act on alternating knitted rows to draw more yarn than on the remaining knitted rows.
When the shape is given by shrinking on a rectilinear machine, it is advantageous to use needles having hooks of flexible or elastic nature, somewhat similar to. that of a barbed needle, the usual Tonture à re brousser needles 60 being intended to cooperate with flexible hooks and to support these hooks as well as to keep them pressed during the cuspation:
from a loop of the ordinary needle to the Tonture needle, the action of the Tonture needle on the flexible hook being clearly shown in fig. 17. The decrease is shown at the places marked N in fig. 1.
When forming a fabric on a straight machine, by increments, it is only necessary: to bring the thread to one or more additional needles. , at one or both ends of the chosen rows,: so as to produce additional stitches to these. rows. In fig. 2, the positions in which the. Additional needles are put into work, are indicated in bTT.
It will be appreciated that thin knit stockings can be produced as described above, on circular machines, without the traces of shaping appearing on the finished article, but by making stockings. according to the present invention on rectilinear machines, customary shaping marks can be produced.
It will also be noted that additional son such as son. of warp, threads. designs, or reinforcement can be introduced in the well known manner, at predetermined intervals.
These additional yarns are introduced simply for the purpose of garnishing or reinforcing the fabric, but do not take the place of the background weft yarn from which the. pitted stitches are formed.
Stitched stitches can be. camped with several weft threads.
