On remarquera que le fonctionnement précédemment décrit des aiguilles pour exé cuter des mailles liées exige une came de forme spéciale, tandis que les mailles ordi naires sont exécutées par une came de cons truction usuelle; pour permettre 4e produire des mailles liées à des intervalles prédéter minés, un dispositif tel que celui décrit ci- après -est prévu pour rappeler la .came à mail les liées et le -dispositif y associé à la posi tion d'inactivité, de façon qu'ils ne travail lent pas sur les aiguilles;
La came à mailles liées est projetée jus qu'à sa position de travail et normalement retenue dans cette position par des ressorts 14 (fig. 8), un dispositif .de réglage à vis 15 déterminant exactement le degré auquel les lames sont projetées;
A. cet effet, la came à platines 21 (fig.
Dans le but de maintenir constant l'en droit auquel le fil est fourni aux aiguilles entre les palettes 2 et 3 au cours de la for- rnation de mailles, quelles que .soient les va riations de hauteur des aiguilles par rapport au cylindre et aux platines au .cours de la fourniture de fil, ainsi que pour maintenir constante ou uniforme la longueur de fil tirée, le présent métier comprend un -dis positif par lequel, simultanément avec le sus dit réglage vertical progressif du cylindre à aiguilles et des platines par rapport aux aiguilles et aux -cames de commande des ai- (;
Pour obtenir ce résultat (fig. 17 à 19) un coin 57a, porté par un levier 57, est gra duellement projeté entre une vis réglable 60, portée par une saillie 58, prévue à la -circon férence de l'anneau 59 supportant la came à platines et une face -opposée d'une pièce fixe 61, telle que le bâti vertical portant l'anneau à palettes usuel, :cette projection -du coin 5Tz ayant pour effet de faire tourner l'anneau à came 59 graduellement dans une mesure;
Seamless hosiery, process for its manufacture and loom for carrying out this process. The present invention comprises a seamless hosiery article, a method for making said article and a circular knitting loom for carrying out this method.
The seamless hosiery article of the invention. is characterized in that it comprises a knitted fabric which is made suitable for resisting casting by linked stitches.
The method according to the invention for the manufacture of such an article is characterized in that this manufacture is carried out automatically in all parts of the entire article.
The circular knitting machine according to the invention. for the implementation of this process, is characterized in that it comprises, in combination, a knitting cam mechanism, for controlling the needles, used to perform tied stitches, a knitting cam mechanism, for the control of needles, used to produce ordinary stitches, a yarn supplier belonging to each knitting cam mechanism,
and means by which the knitting cam mechanism for performing tied stitches and the associated yarn feeder are automatically activated and deactivated at predetermined times, without interfering with the continued operation of the stitching mechanism. ordinary listing sorting.
The tied stitches of the knitted fabric can advantageously be made by passing loops of yarn through and tightly around other loops of yarn.
Fully automatic manufacture in all parts of the article, which can be a seamless stocking or sock, can be performed by the following successive operations: knitting a "long" tubular stocking or leg comprising linked stitches, this knitting being performed by a circular movement; knitting a heel pocket by reciprocating motion; knitting a tubular foot by a circular movement, this foot may also include linked stitches; knitting .a pocket -point by a reciprocating movement.
In what follows, the two knitting cam mechanisms for controlling the needles will be referred to hereinafter under the name of “needle control cams” or “knitting” or “milling” cams.
The cam serving to perform the linked stitches and the associated yarn supplier can advantageously be put out of action automatically during the alternate movement of the loom, for example during the knitting of the heel and toe parts of a stocking. or -a sock.
In the art, there can also be provided a device by which, when that of the needle control cams which is used to produce the bonded stitches is brought to a working position or away from this position, a cam mechanism @de control of the plates, hereinafter called "plate cam". associated with the needle control cam is simultaneously and automatically brought to the working position or to the rest position, respectively. This cam with plates can advantageously be associated with a device making it possible to adjust it both in the circumferential direction and in the radial direction of the loom.
The loom may include thread clamping and thread cutting devices fed by the supplier mechanism associated with the linked mesh cam when this supplier mechanism is brought to an inactivity position, or a position in which it does not supply thread. .
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment of a circular knitting loom according to the invention.

Fi ,,. 28 is a schematic view showing one form of linked stitch executed in the fabric.
As seen in this last figure, the loops of yarn A pass through and also tightly around the loops of mail the B, so as to tie the loops B. </ I > In the circular knitting loom shown, the needles used are provided with two independently pivoting paddles and placed one below and at a certain distance from the other on the shank of the needle, such a needle 1 being shown -in FIG. 2, this needle comprising two pivoting palettes, one upper 2, the other lower 3, which pallets are arranged such that,
when the upper pallet 2 is lowered and the lower pallet 3 raised, the latter abuts against the upper pallet and is placed on it to recover and that, when the upper pallet rises, it closes on hook 4.
In the execution of stitches on a double paddle needle such as that previously described, if a thread is introduced through the hook of the needle in the usual way, the old thread loop on the needle is thread -se .dégage, -that is to say passes over the body of the needle below -the upper pallet 2 and is then knocked down to create a normal or unbound stitch.
On the other hand, if, instead of introducing the thread into hook 4, the needle is projected from a greater distance so as to -disconnect or pass the old loop under the lower pallet 3 and to receive the new thread between the open paddles 2 and 3, the subsequent retraction or return movement of the needle results in a newly supplied loop of thread: is pulled through the old loop retained in the needle. hook from the guille and is driven tightly around this old loop.
It will be noted that the previously described operation of the needles for executing linked stitches requires a specially shaped cam, while the ordinary stitches are executed by a usual construction cam; to allow the production of meshes linked at predetermined intervals, a device such as that described below -is provided for reminding the .came to mail the linked ones and the -dispositif associated therewith to the inactivity position, so that they don't work slowly on needles;
and to return these members to their working or needle control position without interrupting the production of ordinary or unbound stitches.
When the linked mesh cam and corresponding furnace are in use, the trade produces alternating rows of normal normal and linked mesh. In fig. 1, the position of the regular mesh cam is indicated by the relatively low needle wave in OC, while the position of the linked mesh cam is indicated by the relatively high needle wave in LC, a distinet thread being supplied to the needles at each cam and the two threads being arranged in the cam to act on the needles substantially in-succession.
The meshing cam OC used to produce the ordinary meshes can be -of any usual -construction and, consequently, it is not necessary -to give a particular description here.
However, as stated above, the production of bonded stitches requires a cam of special construction and will now be described with particular reference to Figs, 5, 6 and 7 of the accompanying drawings. Appropriate truGtion of this kind of cam and a device for turning it on or off. In fig. 5, 6. And 7, the com cam takes four blades or cam elements 5 ,.
6, 7 and 8, all arranged to move in the radial direction of the loom, two of these blades 5 and 6 being mounted on a slide 9 and the remaining two 7 and 8 on a bucket slide 10, the slides 9 and 10 being respectively provided with rear extensions 9n and 10s. guided ,. in their radial sliding movements inside fixed consoles 11 and 12.
When the cam is in service, that is to say projected radially inwards, the first -blade 5 rises to a level sufficient to pass an old loop of wire carried by it below the upper pallet 2, blade secant 6 then lowers the needles slightly to bring this old loop between the pallets, -so that, when the needles are subsequently raised by the third blade 7 to receive the new thread,
the old loop acts to lower the lower pallet 3 and to disengage or pass under it, the final blade 8 then acting to lower or recall the needles so that they take the thread between the two pallets 2 and 3 and come to the slaughter position, where the new thread has tied itself around the old loop which is still in the hook of the needle as mentioned above.
The needles of one half of the cylinder may be provided with long heels, the others being provided with short heels, as is usual in circular looms for knitting stockings, looms in which a certain proportion of the needles are lifted and put out of action for effecting the knitting by an alternating motion during formation of the heel and toe.
When it is necessary for the radially movable cam to be put into action after being put out of action, it receives its inward movement in two steps, from the main cam drum 13 of the loom, by the loom. intermediary of a lever mechanism. The first step is performed while the short heels pass in front of the cam and has the effect that this cam first cooperates with the long gauge needles and actuates these needles, the second step being performed to complete the movement. inwardly while the cam cooperates with said long heels, said cam thus actuating both long heel needles and short heel needles.
If desired, the linked mesh cam may have approximately half the thickness of the normal mesh cam. The return or disabling of the cam action is performed in a single movement.
The linked mesh cam is thrown to its working position and normally retained in that position by springs 14 (Fig. 8), a screw adjuster 15 determining exactly the degree to which the blades are thrown;
the radial displacement communicated to the two slides 9 and 10 to put the blades out of action is effected by means of two bars 16, 17 sliding longitudinally and each having an end bevel which cooperates with an upper stop 18 associated with. cha that extension 9a, 10a of the slides 9, 10 or with a roller 18a carried by this ba tée. The opposite end of each of the two bars 16, 17 is provided with a roller 19, each roller cooperating with the upper curved or bevelled end of substantially vertical lifting bars 20 provided two in number, one of them referring to bar 16 and the other to bar 17.
The bevelled lower end of each lifting bar 20 cooperates with the drum. cam 13 on which are provided two suitably spaced cam ramps 13a. As we have. said previously, the ramps 13 \ I provide two steps, so that the fall of the lifting bars 20 away from the corresponding ramps 13a is effected in two steps and that it allows the cam springs 14 to perform a initial movement of the linked mesh cam, while this cam cooperates with the short heels and a final movement, while said cam cooperates with the long heels.
A platen cam is also moved radially to come to the. working position or be moved away from this position in syn chronism with the. radially movable linked mesh cam previously described.
To this end, the plate cam 21 (fig. 11, 12 and 13) is fixed to the underside of a radially movable support plate 22 which is guided in its movement by guides? 3, a plate or part 24 placed between the support 22 and the cam 21 cooperating with a peripheral rim 25 to determine the degree of movement of the support and the cam outwards, while an adjustable stop screw 26 carried by the bracket 22 is also arranged to cooperate with flange 25 to determine the degree of inward movement of the platen cam.
The plate cam receives a shape such that when this cam has been fully projected inward, the tabs 27a of the plates 27 move around the loom without being influenced by this cam, it being understood that said cam is brought in. at this internal position, or inactivity, when the previously linked mesh cam; described is out of action.
To return the plate cam to its working position, that is to say to a position in which the heels 27a of the plates are caused to move on the curved face of this cam, a lever mechanism is provided. pivot which receives its command, using a lifting bar 28 (fig. 9 and 10) of the aforementioned cam drum 13.
In the arrangement shown (fig. 9 and 10), a centrally pivoting lever 29 is connected by one of its ends to a pin 30 extending upwards from the support 22 of the plate cam - and cooperates, at its other end, with an adjustable stop screw 31a provided on an arm 31 connected to a pivot or vertical rotary member 32 at the lower end of which is connected a second arm 33 whose end cooperates with the upper end. -curved or bevelled -of the lifting bar 28.
A spring 34 associated with the pivot 32 maintains the arm 33 in contact with the upper end of the lifting bar 28, while a second spring 35 associated with the pivot of the lever 29 maintains one end of this lever in eontaet with the stop of the arm 31 and also acts normally to push the plate cam 21 and its support to bring them to the internally projected position. However, when the lifting bar 28 cooperates with a ramp 13b of the cam 13, the aforementioned lever mechanism moves to return the platen cam 21 to the working position.
The platen cam is further precisely adjusted in a circumferential direction by a screw mechanism, which allows the length of the loops of thread drawn and the tightness of the stitches produced to be adjusted. A positive device making it possible to achieve this result (fig. 11 and 13) comprises a threaded rod 36 terminated by a head 37 and mounted in an element 38 rotating about its axis and carried by the support plate 22, the threaded part .de the rod 36 being screwed through a broad head 39 of a pin 40 which extends downwardly through an arcuate slot 41 in the support 22 and screws into the cam 21.
When the rod H is rotated, the head 39 of the pin 40 moves axially on this rod, which modifies the circumferential position of the cam 21 on the loom. Two additional head screws 42 passing through two elongated slots 43 of the support 22 and screwing into the. cam 21 contribute to guiding this cam during its adjustment.
To be sure that; during the production of tied stitches, the old loop brought below the lower needle pallet will be pressed strongly against the shank of said needles and will rise positively on the back of this pallet during the centering effect of the needles to take the thread, there is provided an auxiliary plate cam 44 (fig. 12) arranged to act on the plates near the place where the needles start their movement of centering or pulling the wire on the cam to mail the related ones.
This auxiliary cam 44 comprises a small arm or lever pivoting at one of its ends and having a curved or inclined internal face arranged to cooperate with the plates when this arm is pushed inward and to push these plates forward. to a small extent, so as to push the old loops firmly onto the needle shank.
The movement of this auxiliary plate cam 44 inwardly is effected automatically by the radial movement of the main plate cam 2-1 which works in conjunction with the linked mesh cam. This is done by means of a short-length lever 45 pivoting in the middle and cooperating by one of its ends, by means of an adjustable screw 46, with the radially guided support 22 of the cam. \ a plates, the other end: of said lever resting on a res pusher comes out 47 connected to the auxiliary plate cam 44.
In this way, when the support 22 is moved radially outward to bring the main plate or linked mesh cam 21 into action, the auxiliary cam 44 is pushed inward against the spring associated with the pusher 47.
Simultaneously with the radial movement of the linked mesh cam and 4th plate cam, a yarn feeder associated with these cams is brought on or off. According to one way of achieving this result (fig. 14 to 16), the supplier comprises a plate 48 guided and movable vertically and arranged to be lowered from the inactive position of the supplier to the working or dispensing position. wire, overcoming the resistance of a spring 49 (fig. 16),
by a lever 50 which extends substantially horizontally from a spindle 51 around which it pivots and which constitutes the axis or the common fulcrum of the pivoting suppliers 52 whose role is to supply the needles to the position of the cam to mail the ordinary. or not linked.
While the linked mesh cam is in use, the associated supplier 48 is kept lowered due to the fact that a lifting lever 53 cooperates with a cam ramp 54 of the aforementioned cam drum so as to push towards. the top a rear extension 50a of the aforesaid pivoting lever 50 .cooperating with .this supplier.
However, when the cam and provider need to be recalled to the idle position - for example when the loom makes reciprocating movements to form the heel and toe of a stocking - the lift lever 53 moves to the distance of the ramp 54 thus allows the pivoting lever 50 to pivot under the influence of a spring 55 (fig. 15) and to unlock the supplier 48, which receives an elevation movement & its spring 49. The movement of the supplier can be adjusted by a screw device 56 mounted on the cooperating pivot lever 50.
As is well known, in knitting stockings on a circular loom for knitting seamless stockings, it is customary to gradually and progressively tighten the knitting while the knitting of the upper or leg is being carried out. towards the foot, so as to shape the leg, this being effected by a gradual lowering of the needle cylinder and of the support or platen ring relative to the needles of the cylinder, or alternatively by a conical displacement The needles and their control cams can be removed from the grooved needle cylinder and to the plates during knitting.
This operation necessarily alters to some degree the exact position at which the yarn being fed to the needles is actually laid on these needles due to the fact that while the platens are receiving a downward motion relative to the needles , the wire extending down to. From the supplier is based on the inclined noses of a smaller number of plates, the level of those of the parts of said plates which are in contact with the yarn with respect to the needles receiving the yarn thus varying constantly and gradually.
This variation of the exact position at which the yarn is laid on the needles is in no way detrimental when the yarn is introduced into the hooks of the needles during ordinary knitting, but when producing stitches tied in the same way. previously described, it is very desirable that the position at which the yarn is fed between the double-vane needle paddles be constant.
In addition, in the production of linked stitches it is advantageous and convenient that the length of yarn drawn for such stitches is kept constant or substantially constant in all parts of the bottom; but we realize that the gradual lowering of the plates relative to the needles inevitably causes this length to vary or decrease gradually.
In order to keep constant the rate at which the yarn is fed to the needles between the pallets 2 and 3 during the formation of stitches, regardless of the variations in the height of the needles relative to the cylinder and to the plates during the supply of wire, as well as to maintain constant or uniform the length of wire drawn, the present loom comprises a positive -dis by which, simultaneously with the aforesaid progressive vertical adjustment of the needle cylinder and of the plates by in relation to the needles and the control cams of the ai- (;
uilles, or vice versa, a gradual and progressive movement is automatically communicated to the plate cam, in the circumferential direction of the loom, to the position of the linked stitches, relative to the support of the plates.
The supplier supplied wire associated with the LC bonded mesh cam extends downwardly at an incline and rests on or cooperates, in the feed position, with the inclined edge or top bevel of a certain number. plate nose, the plates which occupy this position being gradually brought back away from the needles by the plate cam 21.
We realize, therefore, that the degree of advancement of the plates, that is to say the radial position -of the plates with respect to the needles, determines the level at which the wire -is laid on the needles, being of course that the more the inclined platinum noses coming into contact with the wire protrude radially inward, the higher the level at which the wire is supplied to the needles will be and the greater the quantity of wire drawn by the platinum noses will be. due to the fact that this wire is drawn on a greater number of plates.
Therefore, when the needle cylinder -and the platens are gradually moved downward from the needles during the knitting of a long stocking or leg towards the foot, in order to tighten the stitches, the height -of the The point at which the yarn is fed between the palettes of the needles varies and the amount of yarn drawn gradually decreases.
To obviate this, the plate cam 21 which, at the feed position, carries out the return of the plates, is gradually moved in the circumferential direction of the loom during the aforementioned operation of tightening the mail them, this displacement: circumferential being such that, as the height of the plates varies, the degree of radial projection of said plates is modified as follows:
so that the actual height at which the thread is fed to a needle over the platens -and the length of thread drawn are held constant.
To obtain this result (fig. 17 to 19) a wedge 57a, carried by a lever 57, is gradually projected between an adjustable screw 60, carried by a projection 58, provided at the circumference of the ring 59 supporting the cam with plates and an opposite face of a fixed part 61, such as the vertical frame carrying the usual paddle ring,: this projection of the 5Tz wedge having the effect of rotating the cam ring 59 gradually in a measured;
relatively small - and simultaneously with the vertical displacement of the needle cylinder and the stages.
The movement of the wedge 57a is effected by the same mechanism as that by which the vertical displacement of the cylinder and the plates relative to the needles is effected. This movement is: carried out using an intermittent rotation cam 62, a lever 63 provided with a screw or element 64 cooperating with this cam being pivotably connected to the lower end of a bar 65 which extends upwards and the upper part of which freely passes through the table of the loom.
The upper end of the bar 65- is connected in an adjustable manner, thanks to a pin-and slot assembly, to the lower part of the lever 57 which has substantially the shape of a Z - and which pivots about an intermediate point of .its length .on a relatively fixed part, the upper part of said lever extending radially inwardly of the .cylinder of the loom and being terminated by the aforesaid wedge 57a.
As the aforementioned cam rotates, the Z-lever 57 gradually rotates around its fulcrum to project the wedge 57a with a wedging rotation between the opposing faces of the screw 60 carried by the platen cam ring 59 and the bracket 61. the paddle ring. A spring 66 helps release the corner from its projected position.
The progressive vertical movement of the needle cylinder and of the plate support is effected in the known manner by the cam 62, using the lever 63 suitably connected to an arcuate lever 67 which pivots around a shaft 68 and to which -is connected in an adjustable manner the lower end of an or gane 69 extending upwards, which or gave itself is suitably connected to: needle cylinder -and to the support of the plates. The cam 62 receives an intermittent rotation movement of a latching device 70 actuated by a curved lever 71.
This lever is subjected to the action of a spring; and cooperates with a crank arm 72 carried by and oscillating with the usual sector 73 used for: performing the alter movement native to the trade. The repeated oscillation of the sector 73 thus oscillates the lever 71 to actuate the ratchet device 70.
When the tied-stitch cam and the associated supplier have been put out of action (for example when knitting the heel and toe: a stocking), the yarn supplied by the mesh yarn supplier should tied 48 is tight -and. cut. To this end, when this supplier is raised to the inactivity position, the thread of said supplier is driven circularly by the needles below a thread clamping device which is provided in addition to the existing thread clamp, then entered a pair of blades which cut it.
In fig. 20 -and 21, on the plate of the thread clamp, shown at 74,. Are mounted the usual elastic thread clamp elements 75, 76 below which threads arriving from ordinary suppliers (working in the usual feed groove 77) are driven and clamped, an additional swivel wire clamp 78 also being provided for these wires.
The blades intended to cut, these wires are provided at 79 and are. controlled -in a known manner by a ramp or step 80 of the main cam drum, by the intermediary of a suitable bar or lever 81 arranged to cooperate with said step 80 and with the end of a lever 82 which pivots around an intermediate point 83 of its length and to which a slide is connected ver tical 84. This slide carries one of the cutting elements of the pair of blades 79, the other element of this pair being fixed.
As bar 81 rises on step 80, lever 82 is moved to lower slider 84 and, by means of a pin 85 moving with this slider, oscillates the pivoting wire clamp 78 to lift. this element and allow the wire -de pass below -de it, the blades 79 being at the same time open. When the bar 81 falls from the step 80, the pivoting thread clamp 78 subjected to the action of a spring -is released to clamp the thread, and the blades 79 are actuated to cut this thread.
On a part or extension 74a of the thread clamp plate 74. Is mounted an additional elastic clamping band or element 86, one end of which is raised; and which allows the yarn arriving from the bonded mesh supplier 48, placed in the groove 87, to pass below said element 86 so as to be clamped by it. The additional thread cutter intended for the linked mesh thread consists of a pair of cutting blades 88, one of which is fixed, while the other is suitably connected to the aforementioned vertical slide 84.
When the knotting thread supplier -is put out of action, the grain 80 acts, by means of the bar 87, the lever 82 and the slider 84, so as to open the blades 88 and to raise simul At the same time there is a pivoting thread clamp element 89 which is subjected to the action of a spring, the thread being drawn around and under the two thread clamp elements 86 and 89 and between the two blades 88. The fall of the bar 81 away from step 80 then operates the pivoting thread clamp member 89 and blades 88 in the manner previously described with respect to the standard thread clamp and thread cutter.
As is well known, during the reciprocating movements imparted to the profession to -execute the heel and toe of a stocking, part of the needles of the complete row of needles, for example half, are raised in the- above the level at which the thread is supplied, and punches are activated to successively raise the remaining needles and then lower them in the usual manner.
Due to the use of two-paddle needles in the loom shown, there is a risk that the yarn supplied during the reciprocating movements of the loom may engage the lower paletbe of some of the high needles or be snagged. by this pallet and, in order to positively avoid this risk, two small auxiliary cam elements 90 are used which, during the reciprocating movements of the loom, are arranged to cooperate with the heels of the high needles, a little before arrive at the thread feed point of the plain mesh cam OC (see fig. 3 and 4).
These cams 90 act in such a way as to raise the needles. Already high to a slightly higher level -and thus prevent the risk of the wire coming into contact with the lower pallet 3. It is of course that one of the small cams the aforementioned auxiliaries act on the needles during the movement in one direction, while the other acts on the needles during the movement in the opposite direction and these cams necessarily operate at each of these movements because the usual cam 91 leveling the hands lowers the raised hands slightly with each movement.
The raising of the aforesaid half or fraction of the row of needles to the idle position during the reciprocating motions and the subsequent lowering of these needles to the working position are effected by the usual swivel mesh cam. 92. In fig. 3, this cam is shown in solid lines in the desired position to lower the needles for reciprocating knitting and in dotted lines in the desired position to raise said needles at the start of reciprocating knitting.
Well stretched, we realize that, by a special construction of the mesh blade 92 and by the arrangement of the leveling cam 91 to a higher level, we could- remove the two auxiliary cams 90.
This loom can also be used for the production of marks in imitation of guilloche stitches: in a stocking or the like, which is obtained by binding the guilloche stitches constituting said marks.
The selected needles on which the guilloche stitches are to be produced have short heels which, when required; which are actuated by an inclined cam member 93 (fig. 2) projecting inwardly, which member is placed immediately in front of the supplier relating to ordinary mail cams OC and acts to lower said selected needles so that they do not rise to the level at which the.
loop releases -from the paddles to pass over the needle shank, but they pick up the new thread and also hold the old loop, said selected needles, which carry the two loops, then passing to the LC linked mesh cam and to its supplier so as to link the guilloche stitch obtained to the previous cam OC.
A convenient way of moving the cam member 93 to move it to or away from the working position is shown in Figs. 22, 23 -and 24 in which the cam 93 is mounted for -coulis ser radialemënt in a fixed support 94 mounted on the cylinder, needles. In normal tempa, the cam 93 is kept out of action by a spring device, not shown.
With the outer face of this camp cooperates an adjustable screw 95 provided at one end of a lever 96 which pivots around its middle and the other end of which rests on an upper bevel 97 of a bar 98 which extends downward and pivots at its lower end on a Mani velle 99 arm mounted loosely to oscillate around an oscillating rod 100. On the rod 100 is wedged a crank arm 101, mniii, at its free end, a nose .or projection 10-.), arranged to cooperate with a movable chain 103 provided with a series of tabs 104 extending upwardly.
To the rod 100 is also fixed another crank arm 105 which is provided with a suitably shaped arm or extension 106, the free end of which ends below a substantially horizontal bar 107 which continuously receives a reciprocating movement from the rod. usual toothed sector 73 of the trade. A reciprocating bar 107 is attached ,. adjustably or otherwise, a plate 108 provided with a bevel 108a.
Normally, when the cam element 93 is not to operate, the nose 102 of the crank arm 101 cooperates with the chain 103 at a location devoid of cleats 104 and, during this operation, the reciprocating bar 107 performs a back and forth movement at a level such that although the bevel 108a of this bar co-operates with the roller 109 of the bar 98 and thus communicates an up-and-down movement to this bar with each movement da bar 107, the height to which the bar -98 is brought is insufficient for it to be able to pivot the lever 96 cooperating with the cam 93.
However, when the cam is to be brought to the working position, 1t; nose 102 of the crank arm 101 cooperates with the cleats 104 of the chain 103 and, in this action, the oscillating rod 100 receives a partial rotational movement so as to raise the reciprocating bar 1.07 </ B > at a higher level through the arms 105, 106. Of course, this also has the effect of raising the bar 98, so that the reciprocating movement of the bar 107 then has the effect, due to the up-and-down movement of the roller 109 on the bevel 108a, to oscillate the lever 96.
Consequently, with each of the alternating movements of the bar 107, the cam 93 is projected to the working position to act on the selected needles.
Due to the slowing of the movement of the needle cylinder during reciprocating knitting, cam 93 can be adjusted to work on the needles every four rows of stitches.
The loom shown also includes a device for interrupting the pulling of the knit during the reciprocating movements of the loom, for example during the formation of the heel and toe of a stocking, in order to avoid subjecting the knitted article to exaggerated tensile forces and avoid the deformation which could result therefrom.
The pulling mechanism (see fig. 25 and 26) is of the known type comprising two rollers 110 in contact by their cylindrical surfaces and one or each of them can be lined with felt and (or) plated, these rollers being mounted to rotate at the bottom of the knitting tube 111, so that this knitting passes between them. These rollers 110 receive an intermittent rotational movement, during the circular movement of the loom, so as to lower the knitting step by step on the tube.
Intermittent rotation of the take-off rollers in opposite directions is effected by the known mechanism comprising a vertically sliding T-plate or bar 112 carrying a pair of suitable pawls 113 which cooperate with a pair. .of ratchets 114 respectively mounted at the end of the shafts of the draw rollers. During the entire circular movement of the loom, the ratchet bar 112 receives an up and down movement to rotate the ratchets and corresponding rollers in opposite directions and thereby pull the knit down between these rollers.
The draw rollers are elastically pushed against each other by spring pushers or the like. It goes without saying that in a trade in which the needles receive a rotational movement relative to non-rotating cams, the knit produced also participates in the rotation of the take-off rollers and, during this rotation, the aforesaid pawl bar vertically displaceable 112 cooperates once per revolution with a cam element 115 whose role is to effect the up-and-down movement of said bar.
If, while the metaer performs reciprocating movements; the cam member 115 is retained in a position in which it does not contact the bar 112, the take-off rollers 110 will not receive any rotational movement about their respective axes and the pulling of the fabric will be interrupted. For this purpose, a suitably mounted cam plate 116 is provided which rotates during the execution of an entire stocking or sock, this plate having circumferential recesses 116a.
In turn, this plate slides by its circumferential face in contact with an arm or part 117 connected to one of the ends of an approximately horizontal lever 118 which votes around an intermediate point of its length and of which the The other end has a bevel cooperating with an opposite bevel presented by a second approximately horizontal lever 119 also pivoting about an intermediate point of its length.
The lever 119 carries at its opposite end an adjustable pin 120 arranged to rest on a spring plunger 121 rising from the pivoting lever or cam arm 115 which is arranged to cooperate with the ratchet bar with lifting motion. and-aforementioned drop 112, cooperating with the ratchets attached to the draw rollers 110.
When the loom begins to perform -th-es reciprocating movements, for example to produce the heel or toe of a stocking, the arm 117 cooperating with the rotary cam plate 116. Engages in a hollow 116a provided in the periphery of .this plate, which has the effect that the pivoting element 1.15 rises under the action of the spring associated with the pusher 121 to a position such that the pawl bar 112 n is not actuated by this cam.
This prevents the up-and-down movement of the ratchet bar and thereby interrupts the pulling of the fabric.
The pulling starts again as soon as the arm 117 cooperating with the cam plate 116 is pushed out of one of the recesses 116a of this plate.
The loom shown also comprises a device by which, during the reciprocating movements of the loom, that is to say when knitting the heel and the toe of a stocking, the feed grooves 77 and 87 of the loom. the grooved ring 122 (see fig. 20 and 21), ie the groove relating to the mesh furnace. ordinary and that related to the linked mesh supplier, are both closed due to the fact that the grooved ring receives a rotational movement.
In addition, due to the fact that the needles employed have two vanes as described above, it is preferable to provide the groove ring 122 with two bevels 123 acting so as to lower any one of the vanes 2, 3 which may wind have received a movement .de pivoting outward at the time aiz they pass through a groove during the reciprocating movements both in one direction and in the reverse. It is frequently desirable, when making hosiery articles, in particular stockings or socks, made of, or comprising a knitted fabric,
that the sag resistance properties of the stitches are obtained without appreciably decreasing the elasticity of the knit in the transverse direction, that is to say perpendicular to the vertical stitch lines. For this purpose, a positive device may be provided associated with or working in conjunction with or at the position of the linked mesh cam to increase to a suitable degree the drawn length of the tying thread so as to produce each tying loop. This can be done by a part or element associated with or cooperating with the needle.
It is advantageous that the increase in the length of drawn yarn is obtained by delaying the felling of the drawn loop of tying yarn and thus increasing the quantity or length of yarn constituting each loop of the knot, this, ensuring also, therefore, the desired extensibility in the cross direction of the bonded knit.
According to a way of delaying the felling in order to increase the length of the tying loop during the return or descent movement of each of the needles with two or more pallets by the cam with the tied ones used to draw the thread. knotting and forming a linked stitch, a small 1) cam element or stopper is made to cooperate with the upper pallet 2 immediately after this pallet has been released by the lower pallet 3 and after the old loop of thread has passed over both paddles and: has entered the hook -of the needle.
This cam or stopper delays the closing of the upper pallet by momentarily retaining this pallet in a partially raised position, for example approximately half-closed, the tying loop thread still being held below this half-closed pallet. , so that, in the continuation of the movement of the center or the return of the needle, the loop increases in size.
When the retained pallet has left the position it occupied below or out of; ontact of the aforementioned stopper, this pallet closes on hook 4 and the retained loop of tying thread is pulled down to form the stitch. linked.
The stopper may be inclined or bevelled on its face coming into contact with the paddle, and the exact position of this stopper, that is to say its height and (or) its position in the radial direction and (or)
circumference of the needle cylinder may be adjustable-to vary or adjust the drawn length-of tying thread. The effective ion of the stop can also be changed to meet special or existing conditions.
The assembly of the aforesaid stopper can be carried out in any suitable manner. For example, this stopper can be mounted on a bracket fixed to the usual paddle ring.
One or more reinforcing yarns can be introduced at any time during knitting by providing one or more additional yarns near the supplier associated with the normal mesh cam, the linked mesh yarn supplier or both; and in the production of stockings and socks, one or more reinforcing threads can be introduced in the heel and toe portions and one or more different reinforcing threads in the sole.
When the additional or reinforcing thread is supplied to the needles at the place of the linked stitch supplier, this thread can advantageously be introduced into the crochet hook-the needles so that, after the needles have worked so as to form a tied stitch, this extra yarn is retained in the hook together with the old loop of yarn which had previously been loosened and brought below the lower plate. The needles carrying the two loops in their hook then arrive at the ordinary mesh cam where the two loops are pulled down together.
By providing an additional yarn in the manner last described, the position of this yarn on the knitting can be determined in a definite fashion, thereby producing plating effects. The supplier device for placing the reinforcing or plating thread in the hook of the needles as described above can advantageously be movable and brought automatically, as desired, either to the working or feeding position, either to the inactivity position.
