Ces outillages comprennent une presse à. ébauches B (fig. 1A, 1B et 2A, QB) au moyen de laquelle le flanc qui va former un disque est découpé au centre et à sa périphérie suivant des cercles concentriques et approximativement suivant le contour que doit présenter le disque ter miné; une presse à façonner F au moyen de laquelle on donne au disque ainsi obtenu, une forme telle que sa coupe axiale soit incurvée convenablement, par exemple une forme co nique avec des parties planes et convenables pour le montage du moyeu et des jantes;
une presse à poinçonner P au moyen de laquelle on poinçonne la série annulaire des trous placés près du centre et destinés à recevoir les_boulons qui fixeront la roue au moyeu; un outillage à- aléser D au moyen duquel les trous poinçonnés sont alésés à une dimension plus exacte que celle qu'ils ont à la sortie de la poinçonneuse; une presse à estamper (non représentée) au moyen de laquelle on donne aux bords des trous poinçonnés et alésés un contour approprié à la forme des boulons qui peuvent être, par exemple, des boulons à tête conique ou sphérique tels que ceux utilisés dans les roues Michelin;
Chacun des bras 13 est muni de deux avant-bras 14 et 15 et aux extrémités de chacun de ces avant- bras, sont fixés des entraîneurs ayant la forme de doigts désignés généralement par 16; ces entraîneurs sont disposés de façon à venir en contact <I>au moment</I> voulu,<I>pendant</I> l'oscillation de l'arbre S, avec les bords du disque qui a été travaillé pendant le mouve ment de descente des bras 13 (ou à saisir ces bords);
Le bras 13 est fixé à, l'arbre S par un manchon fendu 27, et, par conséquent, lorsque la came 17 placée sur l'arbre de commande H fait osciller la pièce ?5, l'arbre S oseille également. La came 17 comporte une surface 28 qui produit l'éléva tion du bras 13,. et qui, lorsque le galet 21 est engagé sur cette surface, maintient relevé le bras 13 pendant la majeure partie d'une ré- volution de l'arbre H;
Les doigts, le collier et le boulon sont retenu contre toute rotation angulaire excessive par le prolongement; dit boulon entre les deux chevilles 127' (<U>fi.,,.</U><B>101)</B> dont la. position esi f;

Ces extrémités, sont respectivement supportées: l'extrémité intérieure par le banc 35 au moyen de sup ports réglables<B>170</B> et l'extrémité extérieure par le bras extérieur<B>153)</B> l'outillage d'as semblage au moyen dit bras 171 qui s'étend vers l'arrière et qui porte la pièce de support 17\?;
Method and installation for the manufacture of wheels. The invention comprises a method and an installation for the manufacture of wheels, such as, for example, solid wheels of the type universally used in motor cars.
The method according to the invention comprises a series of successive operations and has the characteristic that beforehand the wheel bodies are shaped so as to provide therein a concentric surface at the final center of the wheel and that they are then made to pass automatically. tically from operation to operation, after having initially centered the wheel bodies for these operations, by engaging conveyor means with said surface.
The installation for the implementation of this process is characterized by the fact that it comprises a series of tools arranged to perform the various successive operations on the wheel bodies, including preparatory tools for forming on each wheel body a surface set substantially at right angles to the general plane of the wheel bodies, and a conveyor mechanism, a part of which can engage with said surface, for moving the wheel bodies through the series of tools while at the same time holding against any angular movement.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation constituting with the method the object of the invention, this example being used for the manufacture of metal disc wheels for vehicles. cules.

Figs. 22 and 23 show one side of a longitudinal vertical section and a cross section of the stock which imparts to the conveyor shaft a native alter movement.
As far as possible, in the installation shown, well-known standard tools or machines were used and we have. modified these tools at the appropriate points to ensure the cooperation of these tools, -112.1; with each other and with the parts of the apparatus which it was not possible to achieve with the standard tools.
These tools include a press. blanks B (fig. 1A, 1B and 2A, QB) by means of which the flank which will form a disc is cut in the center and at its periphery along concentric circles and approximately along the contour which the finished disc must present; a shaping press F by means of which the disc thus obtained is given a shape such that its axial section is suitably curved, for example a conical shape with flat parts and suitable for mounting the hub and the rims;
a punch press P by means of which the annular series of holes placed near the center and intended to receive the bolts which will fix the wheel to the hub are punched; a boring tool D by means of which the punched holes are bored to a dimension more exact than that which they have at the exit of the punching machine; a stamping press (not shown) by means of which the edges of the punched and reamed holes are given a contour appropriate to the shape of the bolts which may be, for example, bolts with a conical or spherical head such as those used in wheels Michelin;
a tool to be shaped (not shown) by means of which the desired dimensions are given to the inwardly directed faces of the stamped edges of the holes so that no obstacle exists to the fixing of the hub and the irregularities of the edges be removed; a shaping tool (not shown) by means of which the center of the solid part of the wheel is brought exactly to the dimension which will best fit within its range on the flange of the hub; a finishing tool (not shown) by means of which the flat part of the center of the wheel is brought most exactly to this dimension and an assembly press A by means of which the discs thus manufactured are assembled to the jan tes.
These tools combined in a device are arranged substantially in a straight line going from right to left, a line starting with the blank press B and ending with the assembly press A. The tools which have not been shown in the figures of the drawing, but which are mentioned in the description, have been omitted for the sake of brevity and clarity and it should be understood that they are arranged in relation to the parts shown of the apparatus and that they act feels in coordination with these in the same way as the tools which have been represented.
For example, the stamping tool is arranged, and connected, and operates in a very similar fashion to the punching machine, and the various forming tools are arranged and connected in a manner absolutely similar to the punching tool. reaming D. A double T-rail of the disc transport mechanism extends from machine to machine.
Behind and parallel to this path and not through the bodies of the different tools or machines that it connects, is arranged a shaft S driven by an alternating and oscillating movement which acts on a series of carriers of different types by means of of which the discs C, shown at various points on the track, are carried from one position to another and from one tool to another in the course of the manufacturing process. Parallel to the line of or tillages is also arranged a control shaft H which, by its rotation, actuates the various tools of the installation. A control mechanism M is arranged so as to drive both the shaft S of the carrier and the control shaft H.
The various tools by means of which the manufacture is carried out can be actuated independently or collectively depending on whether their operations require it or not; such control means, not forming part of the invention, have not been shown.
The track T of the conveyor mechanism is arranged symmetrically with respect to the central longitudinal line 10 of the group of tools and, thanks to this track, the manufactured discs are always, when they are in position, placed so that their center coincides. with the vertical axis of a given tool.
The rails, in the different portions of the track, have different sections, but they have in common a flat part 11 which extends horizontally to the lower part, and a web 12 which extends vertically; these souls are always placed at. a distance equal to the diameter of the disc when it comes from the immediately preceding tool which worked it; the discs are thus maintained with their center always in front of the central longitudinal line 10. The shaft S which receives a combined reciprocating movement and winking bone is provided with a series of transport arms 13, each arm being placed between two successive tools in the series.
Each of the arms 13 is provided with two forearms 14 and 15 and at the ends of each of these forearms are attached trainers having the shape of fingers generally designated by 16; these coaches are arranged so as to come into contact <I> at the desired time </I>, <I> during </I> the oscillation of the shaft S, with the edges of the disc which has been worked during the movement ment of descent of the arms 13 (or to grasp these edges);
the discs thus move together along the. track by an amount equal to the amplitude of the reciprocating movement of the ar bre S and during the upward movement of the arms 13 they are abandoned and can then remain in the position they have just left. It will be noted that there are twice as many discs along the track as there are tools which work them. Each second disc in the series is in place on a tool to be worked by it. The discs alternating with the previous ones are placed in the middle of the distance between two tools.
The vertical axes of the various tools are spaced uniformly and the length of the stroke of the reciprocating movement is adjusted so that it is precisely equal to half the uniform distance which separates said axes. The length of the forearms 14 and 15 is regulated by the distance which separates the points of contact or grip of one finger 16 and the other finger 16, it is equal to the length of the stroke of the shaft S, that is to say, half the distance between two adjacent tools minus the diameter of the disc worked.
The transport process is thus applied in the following way: the most reared driver 16 of a determined arm 13 grasps the edge (with certain exceptions to be noted now) of a disc placed on a tool, while that the most advanced coach 16 as associated with the same arm 13 grasps the neighboring edge of the disc placed between this tool and the following one. At the end of the stroke the disc placed on the tool was brought to an intermediate position between this tool and the next one, while the disc which was beyond this tool was brought to the next tool in a position such that the latter can act on him.
This process simultaneously conveys a number of disks equal to twice the number of disks which are worked at the same time and this double taking of neighboring edges avoids it.
extension </I> of any part of the conveyor mechanism within the vertical course of the movement which actuates the parts of the tool a <B> a </B> sliding on the discs. This process effectively avoids any encounter of the transport mechanism with the aforementioned parts of the slotted tools.
The forearms 14 and 15 and their draggers 16 are (with some exceptions to note) always entirely outside the actual body of the discs which have been worked.
The oscillation movement of the shaft S of the conveyor is communicated to it by the arms 13 which themselves receive this oscillation movement of the mechanism shown in detail in FIG. 17. This mechanism is controlled by the shaft H of the apparatus and comprises: a cam 17 with annular grooves; a lever 18 pivoting on a support 19 connected to the bearing 20 of the shaft; a roller 21 fixed to the lever; a rod 22 connected to the opposite end of the lever 18 relative to the pivot 23 and a fork-shaped lever 24 which is connected to the rod 22 and which drives the part 25 rotating around the shaft S and the arm 13 to the by means of a displaced rod 26.
The arm 13 is fixed to the shaft S by a split sleeve 27, and therefore when the cam 17 placed on the drive shaft H oscillates the part 5, the shaft S sorrel as well. The cam 17 has a surface 28 which produces the elevation of the arm 13 ,. and which, when the roller 21 is engaged on this surface, keeps the arm 13 raised during the major part of a revolution of the shaft H;
the cam 17 also has a much less extended surface <B> 29 </B> by which the arm 13 is kept lowered in its engaged position, as shown in FIG. 17, during a small part of a revolution of the shaft H. The large area 28 corresponds to the return period of the stroke of the shaft S during which the raised arms 13 release the grip of the coaches 16 on the discs that have been transported.
The extent of the small portion 2J of the surface of the cam corresponds to the period of advance of the shaft S during which the arms 13 are lowered and during which the drivers 16 are engaged and drive the discs.
The cam 17 can be maintained on a support, as indicated, by bolts 30 fixed in this support through the slots 31 of the body of the cam. The length of the rod 22 can also be adjusted by the slotted assembly part 32, the opposite threaded ends of the two parts of the rod 22 coming into engagement with the threaded parts in opposite directions of the part 32. The part 25 is formed of an elongated portion 33 whose cross section is an axis concentri that to the shaft S, this part 25 being able to turn at its opposite end on the shaft S, as has already been said previously.
A free space is thus obtained between the part 33 and the sleeve 27 of the arm 13 fixed to the shaft. The ends of the journals bear respectively against the fixed bearings 34 by means of which the shaft S is moved away from the benches 35 of the various tools, the parts 25 thus not participating in the reciprocating longitudinal movement of the shaft S and they can share simply the oscillating movement transmitted by the cam 17 and the arms 13. The rod 26 passes through the front extensions 36 of the opposite ends of the part 25.
The shaft 26 passing through the arms 13 constitutes a particularly effective means of fixing the arm and the shaft S to the part 25 fixed in the longitudinal direction, this means is not subject to any of the drawbacks of a key which should necessarily be placed near the axis of the shaft S and which would cause a relatively heavy load to the conveyor during the oscillating movement.
The keyway type of fastening is not only subject to excessive wear and also excessive friction which can cause crushing, as well as to excessive forces which can cause breakage, but also to the multiplicity of disadvantages. caused by wear and by variations of the primitive dimensions, because not only the shaft 26 is of greater dimension than that which it would be necessary to give to. the key; thus providing a support for the arm 13, but this shaft is also distant from the axis of the shaft S by an length equal to several times the distance at which the ordinary key would be placed.
The moment is thus multiplied and the pressure on the bearing surface is greatly reduced.
The different cams 17 placed, as has been said, that is to say a cam between each pair of machines, receive in due time an oscillating movement in accordance with the parts 25. They therefore exert , in accordance with the arms 13 of the torques of oscillation on the shaft S and they distribute uniformly between them, by an appropriate adjustment, the total torque required for the oscillation, with the shaft S, of the arms 13 and of their accessories. As part of the total torque required is applied to each fragment of the shaft S, this shaft S is not twisted along its length, it keeps its ci- shape, hand holds in the appropriate position the arms 13 connected to him.
The reciprocating movement of the shaft S is transmitted to it by the mechanism M. This mechanism as well as the drive shaft H is actuated by a motor of the shaping press F which constitutes the main press of the apparatus. . The same motor is used to control this main machine F, the control shaft H and the transport mechanism; it suffices to give this motor sufficient power to enable these various operations to be carried out, instead of giving it only the power necessary for the shaping operation.
This motor has not been shown since it has nothing in particular, nor moreover than the means by which this motor controls the die 3 of the shaping press. The shaft 38 is connected to the shaping press; it is continuously actuated by said motor and acts continuously on the forming press to make it perform its work at regular periods. The press does not need a deolic mechanism and none have been shown. The 38 in.
sedes a pinion 39 which meshes with an intermediate gear wheel 40 which itself rotates under the action of the gear wheel <B> 11. </B> The shaft 42 actuates a worm 43 which drives the continuous rotation of the shaft <I> II. </I> The shaft 42 also carries an en-ru- wheel 44 which meshes with the. large diameter gear wheel 45 placed at the end of shaft 46.
Immediately below the end of shaft 46 is placed a second shaft <B> 47 </B> on which is keyed an arm 48 having a fast forward and slow return movement. sliding part 49 is integral with the surface of the gear wheel 45. The lower end of the arm -18 is connected by a rod 5 <B> (</B>) <i a lever 51 which is itself integral with a transverse shaft 52 placed at the front of the series of machines. This shaft is provided with a crank 53 connected by a double-arm 54 to the butt 55 which is driven by a reciprocating movement and which moves in the slide 56 carried by the support 57 substantially, at the level of the 'shaft axis S.
This crosses the slide and is connected to the butt 55 as clearly shown on the fit. so that its oscillation movement can be effected without being hampered by its connection with the stick 55. The rotation of the gears produces the rapid and slow movement of the arm 48 and the reciprocating movement of fast forward and slow backward. of the shaft S. Such a movement ensures rapid transport of the discs from one position to another and a relatively slow return of sufficient duration to allow the completion of the effective operations by the various tools.
Bearings are naturally provided for the various shafts and gear wheels shown on the wires. 1A and 3, but it is not useful to represent them in detail.
An adjustment device is provided at the upper part of the crank 53 by means of which the connections of the double bar 54 and of the rod 50 respectively with the crank 53 and 51 can be exactly adjusted so as to slightly vary the length of the stroke of the shaft S, this results in a precise adjustment of the positions of the discs driven by the arms 13. This adjustment is shown on the fit. 2A. It has a 5 # slide; which moves in a slot 59 at the end of the crank.
This part 58 is connected by means of a button 6t) <B><U>il</U> </B> the double bar 54 or to the rod 50 as the case may be and it is hand held in its. position r @@ tlée by lower and upper fixing screws 61.
The blanks from which the C disks will be obtained are automatically brought or placed at. the hand on the lower matrices 0? the blank press B; they are centered by suitable stops or by eyelets, if preferred. This press, when the upper dies: 63 fall on the blank thus placed on the lower dies <B> 62, </B> pierces a central opening 64 in the blank and cuts its edge 65 giving said edge the shape of a circle concentric to. the aforementioned opening.
The press is driven by a drive mechanism 66 shown in detail on the fit. 15, a mechanism which is continuously actuated by the control irbrc 11. This mechanism is formed simply by a quick-acting cam 67 which acts on a drive lever 68 of the press through the intermediary of a series of or- bans 69.
The cam gives the lever the necessary traction force and then gives up this lever; the. The press then completes its working course by the ordinary revolving and stopping device: when the press stops, the upper die 63 is raised to its upper position.
The fragment of track T, between the stamping press B and the. main press T. is formed from. rails the cross section of which has branches 11 and 13 at right angles and directed respectively inward and upward.
The arm 13 of the transporting mechanism which is in front, has its forearms 14 and 15 shaped so as to meet the conditions of transport of the blank disc. The forearm 14 is mounted on the arm 13 and can be adjusted by a link 70 formed by a bolt and a rod which together fixes the contiguous and serrated faces 71 of the forearm. The driver 16 is formed by a part 72 connected, so as to be able to pivot, to the outer end of the arm, by a shoulder screw 73.
The piece _72 has cavities 74 in which springs 75 are placed which extend from the underside of the forearm 14 to the limit permitted by the pivot connection 73; the part 72 can thus move with a certain freedom around its pivot 73. Its rear lower edge is provided with an engagement finger 76 which, at the end of the return stroke of the shaft S, engages on the edge of the central opening 64 of the disc, but which does not exceed the on the underside of the disc. Therefore, as the shaft S performs its forward stroke, the disk C leaves the surface of the lower die 62 and is driven on the track T.
The ends of this track are fixed to the benches in such a way that the upper surface of the horizontal plate 11 lies below the upper surface of the lower die 62 as can be seen clearly in FIG. 6.
The forearm 15 corresponding to this fragment of the transporter is of a different construction. It can pivot transversely about the axis 77 on the body of the arm 13 and it carries at its front end a fork-type driver 16, the ends of which are on a circle of diameter equal to that of the disk and having its center on the horizontal line 10-10 of the device. One of the branches 78 of the fork trainer. 16 is provided with a rigid and wide end. The other branch 79 is provided with an end 80 of the same width, but mounted so as to be able to pivot; this end has the shape of a finger comprising a hinge 81 which can simply open outwards and upwards due to stops 82 which prevent; any backward movement.
This driver, when the shaft S is at the end of its return movement, engages by the ends of its branches 78 and 79 on the periphery of the disc placed in the intermediate position and pushes the latter along the T track to.
the suitable position for the disc to be worked by the shaping press F. This position is clearly shown in fig. 7 and also appears in figs. <B> IA </B> and 2A. This position is determined not only by the front ends of the two branches 78 and 79 at the end of the advance stroke of the shaft S, but also by two pegs 83 placed on the bed 35 of the press; the edges of these dowels are tangent to a circle whose center is on the axis of the machine and which has a radius equal to the radius of the disc.
The periphery of the upper die 89 comprises a series of tapered blades 90 directed downwards and outwards, the lower edges of which are on a circle concentric with the axis of the machine. These pegs and blades, placed sensibly on circles having the diameter of the disc, enter into recesses made in the dies 89 and in the bed 35 of the press respectively and are thus outside the area of the press operations.
When the die 89 of the press is lowered, the driver gently oscillates downwards overcoming the tension of the springs 91 which tend to hold it at its upper part, this especially happens during the upward swinging movement. of the arm 13 which immediately follows the end of the advance stroke of the shaft S; at the time of the return stroke, the end 80 of the branch 79 of the driver 16 due to its position near the shaft S is not raised enough to completely free the driver from the disc which is in the intermediate position to which it was brought by the return stroke.
The end 80, being free to move upwards to a position indicated in phantom in FIG. 6, moves upwards and passes freely over the disc without moving the latter from its intermediate position; this end <B> 80 </B> forming a ratchet, passes over the rear edge of the disc and comes to occupy its position of-en-enagement behind this edge when the arm 13 is again lowered at the time of the end of the. return stroke of the <B> S </B> shaft.
In this fragment of the conveyor, near the roughing press, the arm 13 is formed of two parts connected together along line 93 by a vertical bolt 92 which can pivot and are brought towards each other by the action of 'a very strong spring 94 :. By this means no encounter of the rear part of the forearm 1-1 with a coarse blank or with the upper die can occur.
The forearms can rotate around the pivot 92 so as to come to occupy a position such that they do not damage the apparatus, this largely results from the fact that the transport mechanism has raised this blank until the next stroke of shaft S and that during this time an assistant was able to remove the obstacle.
The shaping press F is the most powerful tool of the apparatus shown; it performs the major part of the shaping operations transforming the blank flat disc C into a disc with a conical surface as <B> 011 </B> clearly sees in figs. 8 and 9; the disc is provided with a central support surface intended to be fixed to the hub, with ribs and a peripheral surface to which the rim will be fixed. These swimming operations are obtained by the simultaneous action of an upper die 89 and a lower die comprising a body 95 centered on the axis of the apparatus.
This body is pushed downwards by the upper die, it must in vain create the pressure, directed upwards, of a udder your plunger with which it is connected by the rods <B> 97 </B> until that the stops 98 stop a strong downward movement.
The shaping operation can also consist of a pull of the desired length and the rim surface can be given an appropriate dimension. At the end of this operation, when the upper die is removed, the lower die 95 is thrown sharply upward by an application of compressed air to a piston 96 @fig. 2A) located below the press support; the arrival of this air to the cylinder 99 is controlled by the main shaping press F by means of arms which act on a quick-closing valve.
The action of this mechanism in connection with the shaping and transport operations and its control by the main press <I> If '</I> constitute operations belonging to the manufacturing process.
A portion of the track T between the press to form F and the punch press P has a different section from that of the fragment between the machines B and F, the construction and the assembly are also different.
The track T comprises a horizontal element 11 and vertical walls 12 perpendicular to. the surface 11 as in the case of the fragment comprised between the tools or machines B and F, but the part 12 of this channel is notably heavier. A plate 102 is flexibly attached to the top of the track and; it constitutes rails of which the. section is channel elm instead of a simple square section. The plate 102 is fixed by means of bolts 103 passing through the walls 12, and springs 104 are supported on the end of the horizontal plate 11. The width of each rail is substantially equal to that of the rim surface. .
The distance between the walls 12 of the rails is substantially equal to the diameter of the discs C, itself much smaller than the diameter of the preformed discs. The ends of the track are supported by the press bed 35 by means of supports 105, the upper surface of the. plate 11 being approximately level with the upper surface of the outer portion 106 of the lower die. When the shaped disc has arrived at the die and has been grasped by the coaches 16 of the conveyor mechanism, it can be exactly brought into the channel formed by the track as seen in the threads. 8 and 9.
The entry of the track can oscillate by deviritioii <B> of </B> the end of the elastic plate, as seen in broken lines at 107 in fig. 9; disc entry can then be made. The opposite end of this fragment of. track between the tools <I> F and P </I> is supported by supports 108 placed on the drill.
The transporter mechanism placed in front of this fragment is also particularly characteristic. The forearms 14 and 15 are connected to the arm 13, in a substantially vertical plane by serrated surfaces 109. Bolts and slots designated by <B> 110 </B> make this connection adjustable, while the alignment is obtained by parts 1.11 extending longitudinally. The coaches 16 comprise at their rear end an element 112, the section of which has the shape of an angle, mounted so as to be able to pivot from its upper side on a transverse axis. 113 located above the forearm 14, the lower branches of the element 112 being fen due 114 so as to receive a rim surface 115, extended upwards, of the shaped disk.
The device thus formed is adjustable in position such that when the arms 13 are lowered to come and grip the rim surface 115 at the end of the return stroke of the shaft S, they grip this rim and during the stroke front of the shaft S drag the shaped disk forward by oscillating the rear end of the track T. If the disk has not been, under the action of the lifting mechanism 96, etc. .
separated <B> from </B> the lower die 95, it will be so instantly under the effect of the moment exerted on the rim surface 115 due to the elevation of the pivot 113 of the driver above the plane of the shaped disc and above the forearm 14, such a moment tending to incline the disc upwards so that its shaped edge is gripped by the driver and therefore removed from the die 95.
The front part of the driver 16 is also angular in shape and provided with a slotted lower branch arranged so as to. be able to engage on the rim of the shaped disc, but this branch is located below the element 112 and is fixed to the front end of the forearm 14 by bolts 116. In this case, this branch does not have the effect of removing the shaped disc from the die, but simply of bringing the first end of the rim 715 of the disc into a r itrr intermediate position and of pushing it along the track T.
The shaped disc is pushed by the front part of the driver 16 in this part of the conveyor from the intermediate position to which it is brought by the rear part of the driver 16 to the position in the axis of the punching press P. This press carries an annular series of punches the function of which is to pierce an annular series of holes 117 in the disc. This press, like the roughing press 8, is actuated by a drive mechanism ment 66, 69 in all points similar to that shown in FIG. 15 in conjunction with a roughing press B.
She's running. and stops until it is actuated again by the continuous rotation of the drive shaft H. At the end of this operation, the rim surface of the pierced disc is brought by the transport mechanism between the drill P and the random machine D. The conveyor mechanism is characterized in this section by the same means as those used in the following operations of the mechanism ensuring the transport from this point to the point of exit of the finished work, with the simple except for the part adjacent to the assembly machine A which will now be described. These characteristics are shown in the enlarged views of this section of the conveyor in Figs. 10 and 11.
Track T has a channel-shaped cross section and its top plates 102 are flexibly mounted as was the case in the aforementioned sections of the track. The plate 102 is further formed of fragments of relatively short length including.
ebacun corresponds to the position of the discs; these fragments are thus flexible and independent and each disc is held in its position independently and in a flexible manner. In addition, the lower sides. upper plates are serrated lengthwise as can be seen clearly on the fi #. 21; the discs held in a flexible manner by these plates 102 are longitudinally guided by the longitudinal movement of the edges of the. rim in grooves 118 (fig. 17 and 21).
The track T thus formed from the shaping press to the other machines is substantially continuous and presents no interruption in its ion- frucur as in the case of the expensive roughing and shaping presses, the track passing above ales benches 35 of the machines instead of ending in. these benches. This is possible, because none of the subsequent operations relates to the.
periphery says disc, but on the contrary to its central part: the. lane T is supported by means of supports 105, as above.
The holes 117 having been drilled it is important: that the shaped disc is not subjected to any angular rotation on the track in either movement from one position to another. The longitudinal serrations 118 meet these needs, but the transport mechanism is so shaped that it effectively prevents any tendency to rotate.
The forearms 14 and 15 are fixed to the main arm 13 of the. same as in the case of the hole placed between the machines I 'and P. But the drivers 16 are entirely different. They include parts 119 bolted securely to the ends of the forearms 14 and 15; these parts 119 are lifted vertically to receive a washer 120 inside.
This washer is carried downwards under the effect of the pressure of a strong spring 121 placed inside, but it cannot leave the cavity in which it is housed due to the retaining collar 122 fixed to the surface. lower part of the part 119 and it cannot engage by its lower end.
The washer 120 is provided with a conical opening, the point of which is directed upwards :. De. @ Loit @ taper 123 and 1? -1 are housed in this cavity and a free collar 125 retains the upper ends of the fingers by means of a bolt 126 and thus prevents them from s '@clittplier outside.
The fingers, collar and bolt are retained against excessive angular rotation by the extension; said bolt between the two anchors 127 '(<U> fi. ,,. </U> <B> 101) </B> including the. position esi f;
it that the adjacent sides of the fingers 123 e1 12-1 lie in a transverse plane. The fingers are normally kept away from each other by the springs 127 and <B> 1.28 </B> placed in the corresponding housings of the fingers. Their lower oxi.ré mites are elianfrvined so as to form an open entry. in 129.
A. at the end of the return stroke of the <B><I>8</I> </B> shaft, the arms 13 of this section of the conveyor, when they swing downwards, project the fingers 120 and 121 of the drivers 16 on opposite sides of the rim surface 115 of the drilled disc and.

because it is not a ma chine with a single race or a single revolution. The bits rotate in a continuous fashion in a part 131. This part is driven in a vertical reciprocating motion along the axis of the tooling as in many multiple reaming machines. To accomplish this reciprocating movement automatically from the main shaft <I> II, </I> a mechanism generally designated by 132) and: represented in fig. 16.
This mechanism comprises a cam 133 keyed onto the shaft <I> II </I> and actuating a lever 134 which pivots at one end on the fixed support: 135 and which is connected by its opposite end to a rod 136 connected to turn at the rear end of a swing lever 137; this pivots at 138 on the main frame 139 and is connected at its opposite end. so as to be able to pivot, to a strip 141 fixed at 1.4? around the head 131 of the boring tool.
The rod 136 is composed of two parts. The lower part is connected to the upper part in a telescopic manner by its end 1.13 which slides in the sleeve 144 adjustable by means of the screw <B> 145; </B> the latter is fixed in the position in which it has been adjusted by means of the bolted upper end 146.
At the lower end 147 of the rod 136 is placed, between the fixed collar 148 and the end 149 which closes the sleeve 144, a spring 150 by means of which the forces are transmitted from the lower rod to the upper rod and to the head 131 of the boring tool, and whereby, when the bits are engaged, they are pressed onto the workpiece in a resilient manner despite the rigidity of the cam 133 and the resistance which they meet in the material of the worked disc.
In addition, the adjustment of the screw connection of the sleeve 141 and of the end 145 of the rod is done by moving the fixing axis 151 and placing it in any one of the holes 15 <B> 2 </B> practi c at the end of the control lever 137, which fixes the length of the engagement stroke which can thus be adjusted as desired. Such a control mechanism is placed in conjunction with each of the tools of the same order, such as, for example, the boring and shaping or punchings mentioned above.
The disc C worked by these tools and transported from position to position by a conveyor mechanism such as that shown in FIGS. 10 and 11 is finally completed and ready to be assembled with the rim which has been worked on the final forming tool G. When in this position, the next section of the conveyor takes it to the tool A to assemble the rim. 0m will better understand the characteristics of this part of the conveyor if we give the characteristics of such a tool.
This lage tool comprises an assembly press indicated by its frame 153, by the plunger 154 and by the support 155 in FIGS. 1B and 2B. A lower die 156 is hand held resiliently upward on the tooling bed 35 by means of a series of compressed springs 157.
The rim B, with which the shaped disc <B><I>C</I> </B> will be assembled, is automatically brought into its position on the lower die 156. When it is in the axis of this tooling, the drive mechanism 66, similar in all respects to that shown in connection with the blank tooling B, drives the press and thus forces the plunger 154 to make a simple backward and forward movement; this mechanism also presses the finished disc C into the rim thus placed, which completes the assembly.
In the event that some shock occurs due to improper adjustment or obstacles, the lower die 156 gives way by compressing the springs 157, which prevents any damage to the tooling.
The rims are brought to the assembly position by means of a rotating table 158 (Fig. 19) which surrounds the outer arm of the frame 153; this table is carried by a support 154 'fixed to the bench 35 of the press surrounding said arm. The tower table 158 is provided with three peripheral cells 159 in which the rim, placed on the. bench surface 35, is centered by means of three fingers 160 'located on a circle whose diameter is equal to that (the rim and which has its center on the circumference passing through the center 160 of the press 153 and tangent to the horizontal center line 10 of the entire apparatus.
The outer fingers 160 'are. offset from each other by more than 180 and are placed at a distance from each other smaller than the diameter of the disc; they thus prevent any radial movement of the rim placed between them. Outside the turntable is arranged a protection rail 161 which prevents the escape of the rims. Thus a rim placed in the position indicated at <B> 162 </B> is brought to the assembly position 1.60 and after assembly is brought to the unloading position <B> 163. </B>
(The turntable turns 120 "with each rotation, this movement being communicated to it by a Maltese cross gear 164 controlled by the control shaft 11 by means of a gear 165 and various intermediate gears, shown in figure, but was not deemed necessary to describe. Suffice it to say that the Maltese cross gear 164 appropriately communicates a desired rotational motion to the turntable by the Intermediate gears 166 which transform the 90 ° rotation of the Maltese cross gear into a 30 ° rotation of the turntable 158.
The rims thus pass successively in a precise manner, during the ordinary periods of rest, through the assembly position 160. At the same time as the rims reach the assembly position 160, the finished discs are brought, by the transporter mechanism shown in figs. 12 to 14, at the same point. In this mechanism, the track T ends with parts <B> 167 </B> mounted with hinges at the fied ends 169 on vertical axes 168.
These ends are respectively supported: the inner end by the bench 35 by means of adjustable supports <B> 170 </B> and the outer end by the outer arm <B> 153) </B> the tooling assembly by means of said arm 171 which extends rearwardly and which carries the support piece 17 \ ?;
stops 173 placed on the fixed parts 169 and movable <B> 167 </B> prevent tin movement of the ends <B> 167 </B> towards the interior of an amplitude greater than. a delineated amplitude. They are urged inwardly by a tension spring 171 regulated, lih; connected to the extension 175 of the arms.
The outer ends of the arms comprise, at the transverse diameter 177 of the disk C. in position, lower and upper plates 11.
and 10? which are cut along arcs 1.78 concentric with the assembly position 16 (l so as not to hinder the movement of the Lao plunger (fig.? B). In addition the outer ends of the part 102 have notches at 179 in the region adjacent to the ends of the diameter 177, which cooperate with the pivoting parts 112 to polish the eye-agement dtl disc.
These parts are in fact the only moving parts of the track, the plates 11 and 112 being relatively stationary as can be seen clearly by examining the hinge 168. Their outer ends are supported by supports 180 connected to the vertical parts 153 of the l. 'or mesh above the plane of the turntable 158 and they are connected to these support: by links 181 each comprising a slot and an ankle.
The arms 13 of the transport mechanism are provided in this section with the usual forearms 14 and 15, but the driver 16 is of a different shape from that which has been described above. The posterior forearm behaves simply, as seen in the. fi-. 13, a member 182 which is bolted to the rear surface of the forearm 14 and which has a lower leg 188 intended to engage the finished disc behind the rim surface 115.
The disc is brought by means of this branch 1M8 from the position of the last operation on the machine G to the ilitermédiairc position between this last position and the assembly position 160.
The lower forearm 15 is, on the other hand, provided with a fork driver similar in its main parts to the fork driver 16 used in conjunction with the transport mechanism in the adjacent section of the press. blanks 13. The two branches 184 of the fork have their ends placed on a circle the diameter of which is equal to that of the rim surface and the center of which is on the center line 10 of the apparatus so that these branches engage on the dis that, center it and bring it along the final section of the track T between the arms inclined towards the inside 167 of the end of the track,
point where this disc is housed in the notches 179 and is centered by the end walls of these notches in the assembly position 160. The stops 178 are separated so as to allow the extensions 167 which can pivot to engage the disc finished in a frame that will serve to center it. At this time, the drive mechanism 66, 96 is actuated, the rim having previously been brought to the assembly position, the plunger 154 then falls and pushes the completed disc into the rim.
If any misalignment has occurred, the pivot arms 167 and their flexible grip on the disc C in the final assembly position allow the disc C to immediately align with the plunger 15.1; this disc will therefore certainly be pressed into the rim which awaits it; the plunger goes up, the rotating table turns 120 and the complete wheel is automatically removed or unloaded from the device.
