<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Aux dessins annexés : la figure 1 est une vue perspective fragmentaire d'une presse équipée d'un appareil conforme à l'invention, en regardant de l'avant et de côté, la figure 2 est une coupe verticale fragmentaire à plus grande échelle de la matrice de la presse de la figure 1, le mécanisme de manuten- tion étant vu de côté et plusieurs positions successives des mâchoires de serrage étant indiquées par des lignes de traits mixtes; la fig. 3 est une vue en partie semblable à la figure 2, mais représentant la position qu'occupe le mécanisme de manutention lorsque' la pièce, telle qu'un panneau façonné, a été complètement retirée de la presse; la fig. 4 est une vue à plus grande échelle de l'extrémité arriè- re d'une portion de l'appareil représenté à la figure 2;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to handling devices and, in particular, to an apparatus for effecting the automatic removal of stamped or forged metal parts, stamped metal panels or other shaped parts, from a press or other machine or , conversely, to carry out the supply or introduction of blanks or metal sheets into the press or other machine, in preparation for the latter's operations.
The subject of the invention is, among other things, an apparatus intended to be mounted on or alongside a press or other machine, and comprising a device for gripping or handling parts or materials which extends towards the press and which is mounted to slide on a carriage so as to move independently of this carriage towards and away from the press, this handling device being provided with means suitable for gripping or otherwise handling a part, such as a blank of sheet metal to be formed or an already formed part, and the carriage also slidable to and from the press and being pivotally mounted to impart vertical movement to the handling device during movement of that device to or from the press.
In the case of an apparatus intended, for example, to unload or remove a shaped part from a press, the carriage is moved forward, after opening the press, so that the handling device - tion is brought inside the press near the work to be unloaded, after which this device is moved relative to the carriage to a position where it is able to grip the workpiece to be unloaded. As soon as the handling device has gripped the part, the carriage is moved in the opposite direction or rearward away from the press and, in this movement, pulls said device and the part.
At the start of this carriage movement
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
towards the rear, a pivoting movement is at the same time initiated, for example by means of a cam device, which causes an upward movement of the handling device, which lifts the part. - this away from the lower die or the press plate. Since this operation is accompanied by a backward travel of the carriage, the workpiece moves upward and backward to a predetermined position, from where it is extracted from the press during the movement. removal of the cart.
At the limit of the movement of the carriage backwards, the gripper then receives a withdrawal movement, which frees the part, after which the cycle of operations is repeated to unload another part. Pneumatically actuated means are preferably provided for moving the carriage and handling device to and away from the press, as well as for moving the clamping or gripping jaws of said device in the forward-backward direction. so that they grab the workpiece when the carriage reaches the limit of its forward movement and release it when the carriage reaches the limit of its rearward movement.
The invention also contemplates, in accordance with one of its features, the application of a pneumatically controlled device for bringing a blank or a blank to a shaping position within the press. , this movement being regulated in time with respect to the removal of the part from the press.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a press equipped with an apparatus according to the invention, looking from the front and from the side, Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section on an enlarged scale of the die of the press of FIG. 1, the handling mechanism being seen from the side and several successive positions of the clamping jaws being indicated by dashed lines; fig. 3 is a view partly similar to Figure 2, but showing the position occupied by the handling mechanism when the part, such as a shaped panel, has been completely withdrawn from the press; fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the rear end of a portion of the apparatus shown in FIG. 2;
Figure 5 is a vertical section, also on a larger scale, taken along line 5-5 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; fig. 6 is a vertical axial section, on a larger scale, of the front end of the control cylinder of the carriage and shows the pneumatic device with delayed operation; FIG. 7 is a section similar to FIG. 2, showing an alternative construction of the invention.
In Figures 1 to 6 there is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the invention applied to an apparatus for discharging or removing from a press shaped parts, such as as stamped metal panels, or others. It will be appreciated that, by suitable modifications not affecting the general principle of the invention, an apparatus according to this invention can be used for feeding or feeding blanks or blanks into a press.
In addition, although gripping jaws have been shown in the example considered for gripping stamped metal parts or the like during the retraction movement of the apparatus relative to the press, it goes without saying that other means making it possible to hold the part during its handling can be used without departing from the general characteristics of the invention.
In Figure 1, there is shown a press A, of any well known type, such as a stamping press, comprising a base 10 carrying a lower die 11 (Figure 2). This press is also equipped with the slide

intended to cooperate with die 11 to effect stamping or stamping of a panel 12 from a sheet metal blank I2a, "Figure 7.
A tubular frame B is arranged near the press to support the removal mechanism, this frame comprising two uprights 13 suitably anchored in the ground or floor and connected at their upper ends by T-connectors. 14, to a horizontal tubular cross member 15. itself connected at its ends, by means of fittings 16, to two horizontal supports 17 which maintain at a suitable distance from the body of the press A, this cross member 15 to which they are rigidly fixed. Although the frame B is permanently secured to the floor and to the press A in the present example, it is obvious that one could, if desired, make use of a suitable transportable and rigid frame to support the mechanism of kidnapping, near press A.

EMI4.5
Between the seal 2 and the conical tips 54 .. each of the jaw elements 52b carries a lower boss 56 and between the two bosses is mounted, to pivot vertically about an axis 58 supported by said bosses, the lower jaw 57 of the gripper. This jaw is provided with a shank 2: 1a which extends rearwardly and upwardly between the parallel elements 53b of the upper jaw and which is intended to come into contact with a rear surface forming a cam 55a of the cleat 55 and intended to receive therefrom a downward pivoting movement, from the position of Figure 2 to the position of Figure 3, during the forward movement of the sliding jaw along the length of the jaw. 'guide tree 44.
When the tail 55a of the lower jaw thus pivots downward, said lower jaw proper 57

swivels up around axis 5,8. The jaw 57. is extended forward by an element 22. which is fixed to said jaw by a screw 60 and intended to come into contact with the part. The element 59 ends with a horizontal bevelled edge which is placed below the two elements with a conical tip 54 and intended to cooperate with the latter to grip the part.
On the upper face of the lower jaw 57 is also fixed, using the screw 60, an elastic arm 61 which extends rearwardly and the rear end of which rests on a transverse pin 62 interconnecting the two spaced elements 53b of the upper jaw, to which
EMI4.7
it is fixed at a point located at the rear of the pivot ,, 8. The lower jaw 57 is thus urged towards the open position (dextror- sum direction in figs. 2 and 3) in antagonism to the sinistrorsum pivoting which results from the contact of the upward curved end of the shank 57a with the cam surface 55a.
The pivotal movement of the guide shaft assembly 39 and the carriage, for example, from the position of Figure 2 to the position of Figure 3, is governed by a cam 63 suitably secured with bolts 64 to a bracket 64a which extends downward from the console plate 18 (FIG. 4) and which is welded to the underside of this plate. The cam 63 extends in the longitudinal direction of the bar or guide shaft 39. behind the pin 37.
As indicated in FIG. 2, the cam 63 has at its front end a fairly steeply inclined ramp but of short length 63a which occupies the desired position to come into contact with the roller 65 so as to move it rapidly towards down around the pi-

<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
is to ensure the movement of the roller 65 and the sliding movement of the

riots 3.8, and L2. to Carrière? at a substantially constant angle.
Therefore, as the piston rod 35 moves toward the rear, the entire carriage and guide 39 initially performs a rapid pivotal movement from the position of Figure 2 to the oblique position of Figure 3. , after which, the carriage is moved rearward along the guide 39 until
EMI5.2
that in the final position of figure 3.
Thanks to this construction, it is obvious that the set of cylinders and guides comprising the two cylinders 3a and 48 pivoting at 2jL 22, on the yoke composed of cheeks 26, 27, is adjustable by sliding along the cross member. tubular 12 and it is also adjustable by pivoting on this crosspiece to a desired predetermined working position, thanks to the loosable fixing blocks 1 and 20. Likewise; ,, the gripping device, consisting of the jaws it and 57. is adjustable forwards or backwards by means of the clamp block which extends downwards from the console plate 41 and which is releasably secured to the guide bar 44 .
In operation, the mechanism is moved up to

that in the position of Figure 2, where the element 22 of the lower jaw rests on the base at the lower plate 10 of the press at a point immediately behind one of the edges of the panel 12 constituting the part which is to be extracted from matrix 11.
When the push rod or
EMI5.4
piston It advances, the upper jaw 5.3., which carries the lower jaw 57 and which is slidably mounted on the lower bar or guide shaft 44, itself receives a forward movement, so that 'it moves the guide portion 53a towards the stopper ¯55, thus bringing the anterior bevel of Isolate 59 below the adjacent edge of the panel
EMI5.5
12- At the same time, the shank 57a comes into contact with the cam surface 5j5a, which causes the element 5, carried by the lower jaw 57, to be pivoted upwardly. conical 54.
During this operation, the edge of the panel 12 is lifted away from the die 11 and firmly clamped between the elements 54 and 22, as indicated by the position X drawn in phantom in Figure 2. Although the operation of the present The apparatus has been illustrated by way of example in the case of the application of a curiously shaped lifting member with a bevelled end 22 intended to disengage the plate 12 from the die 11, it is obvious that we could use conventional pins or pushers to disengage part 12 from die 11, in which case another type of gripping device could be substituted for that described.
After part 12 has been firmly clamped between the elements
EMI5.6
49 22 of the gripping device, the piston rod, 5 actuating the trolley receives a rearward movement which causes the displacement of the whole of the trolley and the cylinders backwards and the simultaneous pivoting
EMI5.7
of said assembly around the pivots 28, g3, said assembly thereby receiving the compound movement described above resulting from the action of the ramp-cam 63a on the roller .Q20 In this latter action, the front end portions of the assembly pivot upwards to position Y, indicated by phantom lines in figure 2, which has the effect of completely freeing part 12 from die 11.
In continuation of the movement of
EMI5.8
the piston rod to the rear and of the roller 92 along the ramp-cam µ ± b, the assembly comprising the cylinder 48 for controlling the jaws the jaws .il and 57 and the part 12 receives a movement en bloc backwards and downwards, away from the press, to the Z position indicated by
EMI5.9
phantom lines in FIG. 20 The pusher 21 actuating the jaws then receives a retraction movement, which releases the shank 57a from the cam 5a provided on the stopper 2i and allows the element fia of the lower pivoting jaw 57 to pivot downwards to the open position under Inaction of the spring 61, which ensures the positive opening of the jaws in a gravity-independent manner, in order to release the panel 12.
The return (or rearward) movement of the pusher 51 may be limited by a spacer sleeve 67, of the desired predetermined length, which is mounted to slide on the guide shaft 44 between the block 47 and the portion. guide 53a of the gripping device. When the panel was
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
released from the jaws, the upper carriage control piston rod receives a forward movement to return the mechanism to the initial position of figure 2.
The operations carried out successively in the following manner
EMI6.1
to be described are governed by pneumatic valves arranged inside the housing 24 and actuated electromagnetically in a time ratio suitably regulated with respect to the operation of the press A, by means of a cam switch of the rotary type, which has been indicated generally at 68 and which is mounted on a bracket 69 provided laterally to the press. The cams of the switch 68 are wedged on a chain sprocket 70 from which they receive a rotational movement by means of a transmission chain.
EMI6.2
mission 2; 1 "which is driven by a second similar chain sprocket rotating about the same axis as the flywheel 72 of the press (figure 1).
Consequently, at a predetermined time in the press working cycle, that is to say after the forging operation has been completed and after the press pin has been released from the die 11, a momentary electrical contact is established by the cam switch 68 to actuate a control relay and thus make the air hose 73 (figure 2) communicate with a source of pressurized air, on the one hand, and put the hose 74 air to the exhaust,
EMI6.3
on the other hand. The pipe 2i divides into two branches 11a and jb which are connected to the front end of the upper cylinder .32, and to the rear end of the lower cylinder 48, respectively.
Likewise, the pipe 74 is divided into two branches a and 74b which are respectively connected to the rear end of cylinder 32 and to the front end of cylinder z. As a result, pressurized air is admitted to cylinder 2a on the front face of piston 34, which is located in the front end of the cylinder at the start and end of each cycle, causing movement of the cylinder. ,, piston 34 towards the rear. The pressurized air admitted to the rear face of the piston 50 which is located in the rear end of its cylinder 48 at the beginning and at the end of each cycle causes said piston to move forward.
As shown in Figure 6, piston 34 is provided on its front face with a stud which fits tightly inside a blind hole
EMI6.4
7.fi. provided in the head or front cover this of cylinder 32. The hole 6 communicates with the air pipe na via a radial duct 77 which itself communicates with the part of the cylinder 32 situated in front of the piston 34. by a small section leakage duct 78. As long as the stud 2i remains inside the hole 76, the air pipe 73a is in principle isolated from the cylinder 32. with which it communicates only through the small section duct 78 which only allows air to penetrate into the cylinder 32 very slowly in order to slowly
EMI6.5
the piston 4 backwards.
As soon as the pin 2i has been released from the hole 22 "the pipe communicates directly with the cylinder, which causes a rapid drive of the piston 34 backwards. It can thus be seen that, when the pipe 73 has been connected to a source of pressurized air, the rapid movement of the piston 34 backwards is delayed for a predetermined time interval during which the stud 75 disengages from the hole 76. However,
EMI6.6
during this time interval, pipe 73b, mounted in parallel with pipe 73a, immediately admits air into the rear end of cylinder 48, thereby causing immediate displacement of the piston
EMI6.7
5p. and from its rod it to the front, due to an admission of air into the rear end of the cylinder 48 through the pipe 73b.
Thus, it follows from the delayed action described above that no appreciable rearward movement of the piston 4 takes place before the gripper jaws 53, 57, have been moved by the gripper. piston 50 and brought to the desired position for gripping the part 12. The section of the leakage duct 78 is determined so that, as soon as the part 12 has been gripped, the stud 75 is released

hole 6. The piston 34 and its rod 3i then receive a rapid rearward movement, thus causing the upward pivoting of the assembly of cylinders and of the gripper carrying the panel 12, and the de- placement of said assembly rearwardly in the manner previously described.
At the desired limit of the stroke of the piston rod 35 backwards, one of the cheeks of the yoke 36 comes into contact with the control arm.

The switch 72 in turn actuates, via its paddle 22a, a control relay disposed inside the housing 24 and serving to communicate the air pipe 74 'with the source of air below. pressure and to put the pipe 73, to the exhaust, thus effecting the admission of pressurized air at the rear end - of the cylinder and at the front end of the cylinder 48, by the pipes a and b9 respectively , and exhausting the front end of cylinder 32 and the rear end of cylinder 48 through pipes 7a and 21b, respectively.
If desired, a delayed action pneumatic device can be provided at the rear end of the cylinder. 2. and act in the same way as the delayed action device shown in Figure 6 and previously described, to delay the rapid forward movement of the
EMI7.2
piston rod until the jaw control pusher 21 has been recalled to release the panel 12 from the elements 54 and 2.2 of the gripping device, as previously described. The piston rod .1i would then receive a rapid advance movement to return the mechanism to the initial position of FIG. 2 for the next working cycle.
A modification of the present invention has been shown in Figure 7, in which 81 denotes a horizontal pneumatic cylinder which is provided with outer 82 and inner 83 end plates or plugs, and which is mounted near the press A side. opposed to ma-

choirs 21 and n. The outer end of the cylinder 8i communicates by an air pipe 84 with the air pipe 73a which also communicates with the front end of the cylinder 32 as mentioned previously. The inner end of cylinder 81, adjacent to the press, is connected by an air pipe 85 to the air pipe 74a which itself communicates with the rear end of the cylinder.

at the same time as the action of the jaws takes place to grip and extract the finished panel 12 from the die Il¯.
