DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS OR SIMILAR ARTICLES.

To all whom it ntay concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES SMITH COURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at 21 Eddy street, in the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new, original, and ornamental Design for the Handle of a Spoon or Similar Article, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

On the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the obverse side of the handle, showing my new design; and Fig. 2 the reverse side of the same.

The material feature of my design consists in the ornamentation of the handle by the use of an artistic arrangement in relief of the stems, leaves, buds, and blossoms of the snow-drop, tiger-lily, and sweet-pea plants.

On the obverse side, Fig. 1, A represents the head, B a small enlargement, and C the shank, of the handle. The bead consists of the stem At the base of the shank C is a conventional arrangement of stems, forming an oval-shaped base ornament 4:. Midway of the shank C the leaves 5 branch from the bead 3 in an upward direction, crossing each other beneath the snow-drop blossom 6, which is suspended from the bead 3 by the curved stem 7. Above the blossom o the bead 3 branches into the stem 8 and the lily-leaves 9. The stem 8 is surmounted by the fullblown tiger-lily 10, which occupies the face of the small enlargement B and is superimposed upon a background formed by the said leaves 9, some of which reappear from behind it and run in easy curves well into the head A. The upper portion of the head A is ornamented with the large full-blown sweetpea blossom 11, whose shell-like petal forms the top of the handle. This blossom surmounts the stem 12, which disappears behind one of the leaves 9, and has on one side of it the bud 13, surmounting the stem 14, which passes behind the blossom 11 and disappears behind one of the leaves 9, and on the other side the bud 15, surmounting the stem 10, which forms part of the edge of the head A. 17 is a ribbon ornament with a fluted surface.

On the reverse side, Fig. 2, the handle has for a bead the stem 3, which terminates at the base of the handle in a series of wavy scrolls 4. About midwayof thehandle where the width increases the bead 3 terminates in lily stems and leaves, which intertwine in easy upward curves and scrolls inclosing the lily-bud 5 and above it the lily-blossom 6. The curves of the outermost leaves conform to the outline of the handle.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The ornamental design for the handle of a spoon or similar article substantially as herein shown and described.
