UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. CODMAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE GORHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 86C.
To (6 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. CODMAN, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented 5 and produced a new and original Design for Handles of Spoons and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a representation of a handle attached to the bowl of a spoon and illustrating the obverse of my new design, the tine portion of a fork being dotted in position. Fig. 2 represents a reverse of the same.
The leading features of my new design consist in the symmetrical wave-like outline of the handle contracting and expanding the width of the handle from the lower portion toward the top with the sharp aocentuations o therein at particular points, surface ornamentation on the obverse consisting of chrysanthemum blossoms with leaves on the surface of the handle interspersed with foliated scrolled ornaments and at the upper broader 5 portion of the handle forming a border for a convex panel contracted in the middle. On the reverse the surface ornamentation con- Sists of scrolled beadings extending over the upper portion of the article to which the han- 0 die is attached and inclosing a leaf-like ornament,inwardly-turned foliations on the widening portion of the handle and a series of raised'scrolled beadings on the wider upper portion, together with the representation of a 5 chrysanthemum blossom, leaves and buds centrally disposed and a larger blossom of the same nature displayed at the upper end of the handle.
In the drawings 5 represents the lower poro tion of the handle and 6 the bowl of a spoon, it may, however, represent the main portion of any similar article, one of which is indicated in broken lines. The outline of the handle extends upward from 7-7 in a suct5 cession of inward curves contracting to 8-8, then gradually widens to 9-9, then following succession of inward and outward curves gradually increases in width to 10-10 and contracts to 11-11, again widening to 12-12 and then contracting to 13, the upper end of the handle. The obverse of the handle is ornamented with the representation of a depending flower 14 of the chrysanthemum class which extends over the surface of the article to which the handle is attached, at the sides and above this flower are scrolls which separate the same from the leaf-like ornaments 15, these extending along the neck or narrow portion of the handle to the flower 16,-above this arethe foliated scrolls 17-17 crossed at their lower ends and forming at their upper portions borders for the plain surface 18, the upper ends connecting with the side scrolls 19-19 between which are fo liations. Above these side scrolls are the flower ornaments 20-20 and from these extend foliated borders with c'nrysanthemum like flowers, between the outline of this portion and the convex panel 21 and above this panel are representations of three chrysan- 7o themums. On the reverse the surface ornamentation consists of the spreading beadings 22-22 which extend over the surface of the article to which the handle is attached and form a base for the edges 23-23 between which is located the leaf-like ornament 24:, above this, following the neck of the handle, are the borders 25-25 connected at their upper ends with the segmentally fluted orna= ment 26 from which extend the inwardly- 8o lapping foliations 27-27 connected at their upper ends with a succession of scrolls 28-28 which accentuate the outline of this portion of the handle and are joined at the upper end of the handle by the representation of the chrysanthemum 29. Between the lower portions of these scrolls is located the representation 30 of a handle with a chrysanthemum flower, buds and leaves and above this is a central plain panel. 0
What I claim is- 1. In the design for the handle of a spoon or similar article, the obverse as herein shown and described.
2. In the design for the handle of a spoon or 5 similar article, the reverse as herein shown and described.
3. The design for handles of spoons and similar articles as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM C. OODMAN.
